Clinical Use of Reproductive Tract Scoring to Predict Pregnancy Outcome
Heifers in the MACEP heifer development program were reproductive tract scored from 1993 through 1997. These heifers were born between February 1 and May 15 each year. They were brought to the MACEP heifer development program in the fall or winter and fed to attain 65% of their mature body weight at breeding time. The heifers were reproductive tract scored 30 to 60 days prior to breeding; estrus cycles were synchronized, and heifers were bred by artificial insemination (AI) 12 hours after they were observed in standing heat. Ultrasound evaluation was utilized at approximately 30 days post AI breeding to determine the AI pregnancy rate. There was a positive correlation between high reproductive tract scores and percentage conception by AI
The nitrogen response of wheat crops following lupins
One of the many benefitsof growing narrow-leaved lupins in a crop rotation (Rowland et al 1988) in the increased yield of the following cereal crop as a result of the improved nitrogen level of the soil.
This article reports the results from 41 wheat/lupin rotation trials involving a range of nitrogen rates throughout the Western Australian agricultural area between 1978 and 1987. These trials allowed scientists to assess the interaction of nitrogen fertilization with previous cropping history and to estimate some of the contribution of the nitrogen and other effects of lupins within the crop rotations. The results provide some guidelines to help farmers make decisions agout what rates of nitrogen fertiliser to use in a crop rotation with lupins
Responsive Listening Behavior
Humans use their bodies in a highly expressive way during conversation, and animated characters that lack this form of non-verbal expression can seem stiff and unemotional. An important aspect of non-verbal expression is that people respond to each other's behavior and are highly attuned to picking up this type of response. This is particularly important for the feedback given while listening to some one speak. However, automatically generating this type of behavior is difficult as it is highly complex and subtle. This paper takes a data driven approach to generating interactive social behavior. Listening behavior is motion captured, together with the audio being listened to. This data is used to learn an animation model of the responses of one person to the other. This allows us to create characters that respond in real-time during a conversation with a real human
Interactive 3D visualization for theoretical Virtual Observatories
Virtual Observatories (VOs) are online hubs of scientific knowledge. They
encompass a collection of platforms dedicated to the storage and dissemination
of astronomical data, from simple data archives to e-research platforms
offering advanced tools for data exploration and analysis. Whilst the more
mature platforms within VOs primarily serve the observational community, there
are also services fulfilling a similar role for theoretical data. Scientific
visualization can be an effective tool for analysis and exploration of datasets
made accessible through web platforms for theoretical data, which often contain
spatial dimensions and properties inherently suitable for visualization via
e.g. mock imaging in 2d or volume rendering in 3d. We analyze the current state
of 3d visualization for big theoretical astronomical datasets through
scientific web portals and virtual observatory services. We discuss some of the
challenges for interactive 3d visualization and how it can augment the workflow
of users in a virtual observatory context. Finally we showcase a lightweight
client-server visualization tool for particle-based datasets allowing
quantitative visualization via data filtering, highlighting two example use
cases within the Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory.Comment: 10 Pages, 13 Figures, Accepted for Publication in Monthly Notices of

Use of Risk Factors to Alter Management for Reduction of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea Incidence
Risk factors associated with calf diarrhea were identified and management strategies were developed to reduce the impact of these risk factors on the incidence of disease. Five hundred forty-one females were bred to calve between March 3 and May 15, 1998. Risk factors identified included: parity, the different origin of the groups of cattle, weather, poor body condition score, and intensity of calving. These cattle were forty-six percent first calf heifers, the remainder of the cattle were mature cows. The heifers were from five different sources, and the mature cows were from the ISU Rhodes farm. The groups had never been commingled. The body condition scores of the cattle averaged below five, and there was a high maintenance requirement because of muddy conditions and frequent wet hair coats due to the continuing rains. Two hundred of the heifers were bred to calve in twenty-six days, and the first one hundred ninety-five cows were due to calve in a total of thirty days. Procedures were developed to allow a one-way flow of the cow/calf pairs through calving areas to reduce the contact of the calves with possible large numbers of pathogens and separate first parity heifers from the mature cows
Cognitive appraisal as a mechanism linking negative organizational shocks and intentions to leave
The past two decades have seen a significant rise in both frequency and size of mergers and acquisitions in the US, many of which have been associated with considerable interruption of organizational activities and a host of negative outcomes for employees. In this study of 763 US-based airline employees, we identify threat appraisal as a key mechanism explaining the relationship between four change-related variables (quality of change communication, procedural fairness in restructuring, change management history, and anxiety about change) and employee turnover intentions. Results indicate that turnover intentions are influenced by quality of change communication, procedural fairness in restructuring, and anxiety about change as mediated by threat appraisal. We also found that job embeddedness moderated the relationships of quality of change communication and procedural fairness in restructuring with threat appraisal. Our focus on malleable levers of withdrawal offers theoretical and practical insights into how turnover intentions can be influenced
