    Comparison of the simplified methods of the ISO 13790 standard and detailed modelling programs in a regulatory context

    The CEN Standards that support the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requirement for calculation of the energy consumption of buildings allow various methods to be used for the same calculation. The impact of using the different methods within the updated ISO 13790 Standard for space heating and cooling energy calculations was examined with a parametric analysis of a common building specification. The impact was assessed by considering the energy band which would be assigned for the building based on the calculation results. The Standard describes three different methods that can be used for the calculations: a monthly quasi-steady state method, a simplified hourly method and detailed simulation. For most cases studied, differences in the building rating given by the various methods were a maximum of one band. More significant differences were noticed in some cases. Parameter values in the monthly method were determined which would lead to improved matching

    Understanding Visualization: A formal approach using category theory and semiotics

    This article combines the vocabulary of semiotics and category theory to provide a formal analysis of visualization. It shows how familiar processes of visualization fit the semiotic frameworks of both Saussure and Peirce, and extends these structures using the tools of category theory to provide a general framework for understanding visualization in practice, including: relationships between systems, data collected from those systems, renderings of those data in the form of representations, the reading of those representations to create visualizations, and the use of those visualizations to create knowledge and understanding of the system under inspection. The resulting framework is validated by demonstrating how familiar information visualization concepts (such as literalness, sensitivity, redundancy, ambiguity, generalizability, and chart junk) arise naturally from it and can be defined formally and precisely. This article generalizes previous work on the formal characterization of visualization by, inter alia, Ziemkiewicz and Kosara and allows us to formally distinguish properties of the visualization process that previous work does not

    An overview and analysis of community bank mergers

    With some of the largest mergers in history now taking place in the financial services industry, the fact that consolidation is also occurring among small banking institutions is often overlooked. The factors that are promoting consolidation in the banking industry are also relevant for the smallest banks, namely the need to spread the cost of technological and administrative overhead and the desire to maintain earnings growth. With limited growth opportunities in many rural communities, smaller banks often choose to merge with other nearby rural banks as the means to gain asset size and improve efficiency. ; Using a case study approach that focuses on nineteen rural banks that participated in in-market mergers, this article examines whether smaller community banks that followed this merger strategy realized efficiency gains. The results show that such mergers have usually been successful from both a profitability and a cost efficiency perspective. Further, these gains were typically achieved without closing branch offices. These successes are important to rural bankers as they seek opportunities for consolidation. They are also important from a public policy perspective and should be carefully considered by regulators in their evaluation of small bank mergers.Bank mergers

    We report the experimental discovery of a self-assembled capsule, with density set by interfacial glass beads and an internal bubble, that automatically performs regular oscillations up and down a vial in response to a temperature gradient.     X-29A aircraft structural loads flight testing

    The X-29A research and technology demonstrator aircraft has completed a highly successful multiphase flight test program. The primary research objective was to safely explore, evaluate, and validate a number of aerodynamic, structural, and flight control technologies, all highly integrated into the vehicle design. Most of these advanced technologies, particularly the forward-swept-wing platform, had a major impact on the structural design. Throughout the flight test program, structural loads clearance was an ongoing activity to provide a safe maneuvering envelope sufficient to accomplish the research objectives. An overview is presented of the technologies, flight test approach, key results, and lessons learned from the structural flight loads perspective. The overall design methodology was considered validated, but a number of structural load characteristics were either not adequately predicted or totally unanticipated prior to flight test. While conventional flight testing techniques were adequate to insure flight safety, advanced analysis tools played a key role in understanding some of the structural load characteristics, and in maximizing flight test productivity
