An Algorithm for Preferential Selection of Spectroscopic Targets in LEGUE
We describe a general target selection algorithm that is applicable to any
survey in which the number of available candidates is much larger than the
number of objects to be observed. This routine aims to achieve a balance
between a smoothly-varying, well-understood selection function and the desire
to preferentially select certain types of targets. Some target-selection
examples are shown that illustrate different possibilities of emphasis
functions. Although it is generally applicable, the algorithm was developed
specifically for the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and
Exploration (LEGUE) survey that will be carried out using the Chinese Guo Shou
Jing Telescope. In particular, this algorithm was designed for the portion of
LEGUE targeting the Galactic halo, in which we attempt to balance a variety of
science goals that require stars at fainter magnitudes than can be completely
sampled by LAMOST. This algorithm has been implemented for the halo portion of

Spontaneous coherence and the quantum Hall Effect in triple-layer electron systems
We investigate spontaneous interlayer phase coherence and the occurrence of
the quantum Hall effect in triple-layer electron systems. Our work is based on
a simple tight-binding model that greatly facilitates calculations and whose
accuracy is verified by comparison with recent experiments. By calculating the
ground state in an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and the
collective-mode spectrum in a time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation, we
construct a phase diagram delimiting regions in the parameter space of the
model where the integer quantum Hall effect occurs in the absence of interlayer

The LEGUE Input Catalogue for Dark Night Observing in the LAMOST Pilot Survey
We outline the design of the dark nights portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey,
which began observations in October 2011. In particular, we focus on Milky Way
stellar candidates that are targeted for the LEGUE (LAMOST Experiment for
Galactic Understanding and Exploration) survey. We discuss the regions of sky
in which spectroscopic candidates were selected, and the motivations for
selecting each of these sky areas. Some limitations due to the unique design of
the telescope are discussed, including the requirement that a bright (V < 8)
star be placed at the center of each plate for wavefront sensing and active
optics corrections. The target selection categories and scientific goals
motivating them are briefly discussed, followed by a detailed overview of how
these selection functions were realized. We illustrate the difference between
the overall input catalog - Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry - and

The biomechanical role of periodontal ligament in bonded and replanted vertically fractured teeth under cyclic biting forces
After teeth are replanted, there are two possible healing responses: periodontal ligament healing or ankylosis with subsequent replacement resorption. The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue resistance of vertically fractured teeth after bonding the fragments under conditions simulating both healing modes. Thirty-two human premolars were vertically fractured and the fragments were bonded together with Super-Bond C&B. They were then randomly distributed into four groups (BP, CP, CA, BA). The BP and CP groups were used to investigate the periodontal ligament healing mode whilst the BA and CA groups simulated ankylosis. All teeth had root canal treatment performed. Metal crowns were constructed for the CP and CA groups. The BP and BA groups only had composite resin restorations in the access cavities. All specimens were subjected to a 260 N load at 4 Hz until failure of the bond or until 2×106 cycles had been reached if no fracture occurred. Cracks were detected by stereomicroscope imaging and also assessed via dye penetration tests. Finally, interfaces of the resin luting agent were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results confirmed that the fatigue resistance was higher in the groups with simulated periodontal ligament healing. Periodontal reattachment showed important biomechanical role in bonded and replanted vertically fractured teeth
Spin Relaxation in Single Layer Graphene with Tunable Mobility
Graphene is an attractive material for spintronics due to theoretical
predictions of long spin lifetimes arising from low spin-orbit and hyperfine
couplings. In experiments, however, spin lifetimes in single layer graphene
(SLG) measured via Hanle effects are much shorter than expected theoretically.
Thus, the origin of spin relaxation in SLG is a major issue for graphene
spintronics. Despite extensive theoretical and experimental work addressing
this question, there is still little clarity on the microscopic origin of spin
relaxation. By using organic ligand-bound nanoparticles as charge reservoirs to
tune mobility between 2700 and 12000 cm2/Vs, we successfully isolate the effect
of charged impurity scattering on spin relaxation in SLG. Our results
demonstrate that while charged impurities can greatly affect mobility, the spin
lifetimes are not affected by charged impurity scattering.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Curcumin induces the apoptosis of human monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells via the activation of JNK/ERK Pathways
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Curcumin is a principal compound of turmeric, commonly used to treat tumors and other diseases. However, its anti-cancer activity in human acute monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells is not clear. This study aimed to study the anti-cancer effect and action of curcumin on THP-1 cells.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>THP-1 parental cells and PMA-treated THP-1 cells, were used as <it>in vitro </it>models to evaluate the anti-cancer effect and mechanism of curcumin. Apoptosis and its mechanism were evaluated by WST-1, flow cytometry and Western blotting. MAPK inhibitors were used to further confirm the molecular mechanism of curcumin-induced THP-1 cell apoptosis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Curcumin induced cell apoptosis of THP-1 cells as shown by cell viability, cell cycle analysis and caspase activity. Curcumin significantly increased the phosphorylation of ERK, JNK and their downstream molecules (c-Jun and Jun B). Inhibitor of JNK and ERK reduced the pro-apoptotic effect of curcumin on THP-1 cells as evidenced by caspase activity and the activation of ERK/JNK/Jun cascades. On the contrary, the pro-apoptotic effect of curcumin was abolished in the differentiated THP-1 cells mediated by PMA.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study demonstrates that curcumin can induce the THP-1 cell apoptosis through the activation of JNK/ERK/AP1 pathways. Besides, our data suggest its novel use as an anti-tumor agent in acute monocytic leukemia.</p
Emodin Induces Apoptotic Death in Murine Myelomonocytic Leukemia WEHI-3 Cells In Vitro
Emodin is one of major compounds in rhubarb (Rheum palmatum L.), a plant used as herbal medicine in Chinese population. Although many reports have shown that emodin exhibits anticancer activity in many tumor cell types, there is no available information addressing emodin-affected apoptotic responses in the murine leukemia cell line (WEHI-3) and modulation of the immune response in leukemia mice. We investigated that emodin induced cytotoxic effects in vitro and affected WEHI-3 cells in vivo. This study showed that emodin decreased viability and induced DNA fragmentation in WEHI-3 cells. Cells after exposure to emodin for 24 h have shown chromatin condensation and DNA damage. Emodin stimulated the productions of ROS and Ca2+ and reduced the level of ΔΨm by flow cytometry. Our results from Western blotting suggest that emodin triggered apoptosis of WEHI-3 cells through the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, caspase cascade-dependent and -independent mitochondrial pathways. In in vivo study, emodin enhanced the levels of B cells and monocytes, and it also reduced the weights of liver and spleen compared with leukemia mice. Emodin promoted phagocytic activity by monocytes and macrophages in comparison to the leukemia mice group. In conclusions, emodin induced apoptotic death in murine leukemia WEHI-3 cells and enhanced phagocytosis in the leukemia animal model
Non-Fermi-liquid d-wave metal phase of strongly interacting electrons
Developing a theoretical framework for conducting electronic fluids
qualitatively distinct from those described by Landau's Fermi-liquid theory is
of central importance to many outstanding problems in condensed matter physics.
One such problem is that, above the transition temperature and near optimal
doping, high-transition-temperature copper-oxide superconductors exhibit
`strange metal' behaviour that is inconsistent with being a traditional Landau
Fermi liquid. Indeed, a microscopic theory of a strange-metal quantum phase
could shed new light on the interesting low-temperature behaviour in the
pseudogap regime and on the d-wave superconductor itself. Here we present a
theory for a specific example of a strange metal---the 'd-wave metal'. Using
variational wavefunctions, gauge theoretic arguments, and ultimately
large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations, we show that
this remarkable quantum phase is the ground state of a reasonable microscopic
Hamiltonian---the usual t-J model with electron kinetic energy and two-spin
exchange supplemented with a frustrated electron `ring-exchange' term,
which we here examine extensively on the square lattice two-leg ladder. These
findings constitute an explicit theoretical example of a genuine
