The chemiluminescence (CL) behavior, observed in the singlet oxygenation of three fluorescent aromatics tethered 9-methylidene-10-methylacridans bearing the pyrene, perylene, and stilbene moieties, was investigated. The CL spectrum of 9-(perylen-3′-ylidene)-10-methylacridan displayed a red-shifted emission different from the fluorescent products, while 9-(pyren-1′-ylidene)-10-methylacridan and 9-(4′-styrylbenzylidene)-10-methylacridan produced very weak CLs. A chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) quenching of the excited aromatic aldehydes by the acridans remaining as the unreacted reactants was found to result in these unexpected CL behaviors.ArticleTetrahedron Letters. 54(11):1338-1343 (2013)journal articl

The Childbirth Experience Scale (CBE-scale) measures mothers\u27 valuable childbirth experiences. It has been developed on purpose to clarify the effects the valuable childbirth experiences have on mother-child relationship and mental and physical health in mothers and children. The purpose of this study is to investigate what factors of childbirth effect on high scores of CBE-scale so as to define what kinds of care by midwives are required for mothers\u27 valuable childbirth experience. As the result of the research for 227 mothers, determinants of mothers\u27 valuable childbirth experience was found out to be the midwife in charge, childbirth position, episiotomy, and the number of past deliveries. This result suggested that it is important for midwives to allow the mothers to have free childbirth position, to try to avoid episiotomy, according to "Care in normal birth: a practical guide", and to help mothers activate their psychological and physical function. It was discussed that midwives\u27 care which arouses mothers\u27 valuable childbirth experience could lead the mothers to the next childbirth

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the clinical feasibility of intraoperative photodiagnosis (PD) of malignant brain tumor using talaporfin sodium (TPS), which is an agent used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancers. Methods: Forty-seven patients diagnosed with malignant gliomas by preoperative imaging (42 patients with gliomas and 5 patients with other brain tumors) received an intravenous injection of TPS at 40 mg/m2 24 h before resection. During surgery, these patients were irradiated with diode laser light at 664 nm, and tumor fluorescence was observed. The fluorescence intensity was visually rated on a 3-point rating scale [strong fluorescence, weak fluorescence and no fluorescence]. TPS concentrations in 124 samples from 47 cases were measured by HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography). Results: The fluorescence intensity was confirmed to be weak in all patients with Grade II gliomas and strong in almost all patients with Grade III or IV gliomas, reflecting the histological grade of malignancy. In patients with non-glioma brain tumors except for 1 patient with a metastatic brain tumor, the fluorescence intensity was strong. The mean TPS concentration in tissues was 1.62 μg/g for strong fluorescence areas, 0.67 μg/g for weak fluorescence areas and 0.19 μg/g for no fluorescence areas. Conclusions: Establishment of an appropriate fluorescence observation system enabled fluorescence-guided resection of malignant brain tumors using TPS, and the fluorescence intensity of tumors correlated with the TPS concentrations in tissues. These results suggest that TPS is a useful photosensitizer for both intraoperative fluorescence diagnosis and photodynamic therapy
