    Decentralized Weakly Convex Optimization Over the Stiefel Manifold

    We focus on a class of non-smooth optimization problems over the Stiefel manifold in the decentralized setting, where a connected network of nn agents cooperatively minimize a finite-sum objective function with each component being weakly convex in the ambient Euclidean space. Such optimization problems, albeit frequently encountered in applications, are quite challenging due to their non-smoothness and non-convexity. To tackle them, we propose an iterative method called the decentralized Riemannian subgradient method (DRSM). The global convergence and an iteration complexity of O(ε2log2(ε1))\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2} \log^2(\varepsilon^{-1})) for forcing a natural stationarity measure below ε\varepsilon are established via the powerful tool of proximal smoothness from variational analysis, which could be of independent interest. Besides, we show the local linear convergence of the DRSM using geometrically diminishing stepsizes when the problem at hand further possesses a sharpness property.     Timber production assessment of a plantation forest: An integrated framework with field-based inventory, multi-source remote sensing data and forest management history

    Timber production is the purpose for managing plantation forests, and its spatial and quantitative information is critical for advising management strategies. Previous studies have focused on growing stock volume (GSV), which represents the current potential of timber production, yet few studies have investigated historical process-harvested timber. This resulted in a gap in a synthetical ecosystem service assessment of timber production. In this paper, we established a Management Process-based Timber production (MPT) framework to integrate the current GSV and the harvested timber derived from historical logging regimes, trying to synthetically assess timber production for a historical period. In the MPT framework, age-class and current GSV determine the times of historical thinning and the corresponding harvested timber, by using a "space-for-time" substitution. The total timber production can be estimated by the historical harvested timber in each thinning and the current GSV. To test this MPT framework, an empirical study on a larch plantation (LP) with area of 43,946 ha was conducted in North China for a period from 1962 to 2010. Field-based inventory data was integrated with ALOS PALSAR (Advanced Land-Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and Landsat-8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) data for estimating the age-class and current GSV of LP. The random forest model with PALSAR backscatter intensity channels and OLI bands as input predictive variables yielded an accuracy of 67.9% with a Kappa coefficient of 0.59 for age-class classification. The regression model using PALSAR data produced a root mean square error (RMSE) of 36.5 m(3) ha(-1). The total timber production of LP was estimated to be 7.27 x 10(6) m(3), with 4.87 x 10(6) m(3) in current GSV and 2.40 x 10(6) m(3) in harvested timber through historical thinning. The historical process-harvested timber accounts to 33.0% of the total timber production, which component has been neglected in the assessments for current status of plantation forests. Synthetically considering the RMSE for predictive GSV and misclassification of age-class, the error in timber production were supposed to range from -55.2 to 56.3 m(3) ha(-1). The MPT framework can be used to assess timber production of other tree species at a larger spatial scale, providing crucial information for a better understanding of forest ecosystem service.     A biophoton method for identifying the quality states of fresh Chinese herbs

    Introduction: The quality of Chinese herbs is the basis for ensuring their safety and efficacy. However, the quality evaluation system is imperfect. In particular, there is a lack of quality evaluation methods for fresh Chinese herbs during growth. The biophoton is a common phenomenon and provides complete information about the interior of the living system, which is consistent with the holistic concept of traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, we aim to correlate the biophoton characteristics with the quality states to find the biophoton parameters that can characterize the quality states of fresh Chinese herbs.Methods: The biophoton characteristics of motherwort and safflower were measured and characterized by the counts per second (CPS) in the steady state and the initial intensity (I0) and coherent time (T) of delayed luminescence. The active ingredient content was measured by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The pigment content of motherwort leaves was measured by UV spectrophotometry. The t-test and correlation analysis were performed on the experimental results.Results: The CPS and I0 of motherwort and I0 of safflower showed a significant downward trend during the growth process, and their active ingredient content showed a trend that increased and then decreased. The CPS, I0, and the content of active ingredients and pigments in a healthy state were significantly higher than those in a poor state, while T showed the opposite results. The CPS and I0 were all significantly and positively correlated with the content of active ingredients and pigments, while the T of motherwort showed the opposite results.Conclusion: It is feasible to identify the quality states of fresh Chinese herbs by using their biophoton characteristics. Both CPS and I0 have better correlations with the quality states and can be considered characteristic parameters of the quality of fresh Chinese herbs

    Effect of LiNO<sub>3</sub> on Expansion of Alkali–Silica Reaction in Rock Prisms and Concrete Microbars Prepared by Sandstone

    The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of LiNO3 on the alkali&#8211;silica reaction (ASR) expansion of reactive sandstone and the mechanism through which this occurs. This paper presents the results from tests carried out on rock prisms and concrete microbars prepared by sandstone and LiNO3. The findings show that LiNO3 does not decrease the expansion of these samples unless the molar ratio of [Li]/[Na + K] exceeds 1.66, and the expansion is greatly increased when its concentration is below this critical concentration. The expansion stress test proves that Li2SiO3 is obviously expansive. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicate that LiNO3 reacts with the microcrystalline quartz inside sandstone, inhibiting the formation of ASR gel, and the formation of Li2SiO3 causes larger expansion. A high concentration of LiNO3 might inhibit the ASR reaction in the early stages, and the formation of Li2SiO3 causes expansion and cracks in concrete after a long period of time

    Study on Coupling Coordination Relationship between Urban Development Intensity and Water Environment Carrying Capacity of Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle

    The high-level coupling coordination relationship between urban development and a city’s water environment carrying capacity is conducive to urban sustainable development. Taking the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle as the research object, this study developed an index system to determine the urban development intensity and water environment carrying capacity, respectively. Based on the comprehensive evaluation model and the coupling coordination degree model, the spatial distribution characteristics, agglomeration law of urban development intensity, water environment carrying capacity and their coupling coordination relationship were analyzed. The results showed that the areas with a high urban development intensity were distributed in the main urban districts of Chengdu and Chongqing, and the intensity gradually reduced away from both core cities, which formed a “ripple-like” pattern. The areas with a high water environment carrying capacity were mainly in the southwest, southeast, northeast and central parts of the region and were distributed in a “W” pattern along the Yangtze River. The coupling coordination degree between the urban development intensity and water environment carrying capacity was low, as only 11.4% of the cities were coordinated while most cities were slightly uncoordinated. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for sustainable urban development in the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle

    Rhabdomyolysis, lactic acidosis, and multiple organ failure during telbivudine treatment for hepatitis B: a case report and review of the literature

    Abstract Background Telbivudine can cause severe side effects, including myositis, neuritis, rhabdomyolysis, and lactic acidosis. However, reported cases of telbivudine leading to multiple organ failure are rare. Here, we report a case of telbivudine-induced severe polymyositis, lactic acidosis, and multiple organ failure. Case presentation A 30-year-old Chinese man with hepatitis B virus infection received antiviral treatment with 600 mg of telbivudine daily for more than 11 months. He developed progressive weakness and myalgia, and subsequently experienced palpitations, chest tightness, lethargy, hypotension, and hypoxemia. Blood tests showed markedly elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase (955 U/L), aspartate aminotransferase (1375 U/L), blood urea nitrogen (14.9 mmol/L), creatine kinase (peak at 8050 U/L), and blood lactate (>20.0 mmol/L). His symptoms improved after continuous renal replacement therapy and short-term methylprednisolone treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation for more than 2 months led to recovery of muscle strength to the normal range. Conclusions We conclude that continuous renal replacement and steroid therapies play key roles in stabilizing telbivudine-induced severe rhabdomyolysis, lactic acidosis, and multiple organ failure. Hyperbaric oxygen, physical therapy, and rehabilitation may aid in functional recovery after the acute phase of lactic acidosis and organ failure
