Multi-Queue Request Scheduling for Profit Maximization in IaaS Clouds

[EN] In cloud computing, service providers rent heterogeneous servers from cloud providers, i.e., Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), to meet requests of consumers. The heterogeneity of servers and impatience of consumers pose great challenges to service providers for profit maximization. In this article, we transform this problem into a multi-queue model where the optimal expected response time of each queue is theoretically analyzed. A multi-queue request scheduling algorithm framework is proposed to maximize the total profit of service providers, which consists of three components: request stream splitting, requests allocation, and server assignment. A request stream splitting algorithm is designed to split the arriving requests to minimize the response time in the multi-queue system. An allocation algorithm, which adopts a one-step improvement strategy, is developed to further optimize the response time of the requests. Furthermore, an algorithm is developed to determine the appropriate number of required servers of each queue. After statistically calibrating parameters and algorithm components over a comprehensive set of random instances, the proposed algorithms are compared with the state-of-the-art over both simulated and real-world instances. The results indicate that the proposed multi-queue request scheduling algorithm outperforms the other algorithms with acceptable computational time. This work was supported in part by the National Key Research and Development Program of China under Grant 2017YFB1400800, in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61872077 and 61832004, and in part by the Collaborative InnovationCenter of Wireless Communications Technology. Mesozoic–Tertiary exhumation history of the Altai Mountains, northern Xinjiang, China: New constraints from apatite fission track data

    Get PDF
This study uses apatite fission track (FT) analysis to constrain the exhumation history of bedrock samples collected from the Altai Mountains in northern Xinjiang, China. Samples were collected as transects across the main structures related to Palaeozoic crustal accretion events. FT results and modeling identify three stages in sample cooling history spanning the Mesozoic and Tertiary. Stage one records rapid cooling to the low temperature part of the fission track partial annealing zone circa 70 ± 10 °C. Stage two, records a period of relative stability with little if any cooling taking place between 75 and 25–20 Ma suggesting the Altai region had been reduced to an area of low relief. Support for this can be found in the adjacent Junngar Basin that received little if any sediment during this interval. Final stage cooling took place in the Miocene at an accelerated rate bringing the sampled rocks to the Earth's surface. This last stage, linked to the far field effects of the Himalayan collision, most likely generated the surface uplift and relief that define the present-day Altai Mountains

Cogging force reduction for tubular permanent magnet linear motor by slots with different sizes

    Get PDF
Reduction of cogging force is one of the main concerns of tubular permanent magnet linear motor (TPMLM). In this paper, an analytical calculation of air-gap magnetic density is derived. In addition, an analytical calculation of cogging force is deduced by the energy method. The impact of slots with different sizes on the Fourier coefficients of relative air-gap permanence function is demonstrated. When the nz/4p is the integer, it will produce the cogging force. Therefore, it is practical to reduce the cogging force by changing the Fourier coefficient smaller. The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is validated by experimental results

MiR26-5p inhibits pathological pulmonary microvascular angiogenesis via down-regulating WNT5A

Objective(s): Pathological micro angiogenesis is a key pathogenic factor in pulmonary diseases such as pulmonary hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome. More and more pieces of evidence show that excessive proliferation of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells is the key event of pathological micro angiogenesis. The purpose of this research is to reveal the mechanism of miR26-5p regulating pulmonary microvascular hyperproliferation.Materials and Methods: Hepatopulmonary syndrome rat model was made by common bile duct ligation. HE and IHC staining were used for analysis of the pathology of the rat. CCK8, transwell, and wound healing assay were used to assess miR26-5p or target gene WNT5A functioned toward PMVECs. microRNA specific mimics and inhibitors were used for up/down-regulated miR26-5p expression in PMVECs. Recombinant lentivirus was used for overexpression/knockdown WNT5A expression in PMVECs. And the regulation relationship of miR26-5p and WNT5A was analyzed by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Results: qPCR showed that miR26-5p was significantly down-regulated in the course of HPS disease. Bioinformatics data showed that WNT5A was one of the potential key target genes of miR26-5p. Immunohistochemistry and qPCR analysis showed that WNT5A was largely expressed in pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells, in addition, this molecule was significantly up-regulated with the progression of the disease. Furthermore, dual luciferase reporter assay showed that miR26-5p could bind to WNT5A 3 ‘UTR region to inhibit WNT5A synthesis. Conclusion: The results suggested MiR26-5p negatively regulated PMVECs proliferation and migration by WNT5A expression. Overexpression of miR26-5p may be a potentially beneficial strategy for HPS therapy

Strong, conductive carbon nanotube fibers as efficient hole collectors

    Get PDF
We present the photovoltaic properties of heterojunctions made from single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) fibers and n-type silicon wafers. The use of the opaque SWNT fiber allows photo-generated holes to transport along the axis direction of the fiber. The heterojunction solar cells show conversion efficiencies of up to 3.1% (actual) and 10.6% (nominal) at AM1.5 condition. In addition, the use of strong, environmentally benign carbon nanotube fibers provides excellent structural stability of the photovoltaic devices

Research progress on applications and mechanisms of osteogenesis effect of magnetic fields in oral field

Magnetic fields are safe and used in noninvasive physical therapies. Numerous studies have confirmed that magnetic fields have good osteogenic effects and certain value for clinical application in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement, promoting bone-implant integration, promoting fracture healing and improving the effects of distraction osteogenesis. Magnetic fields are expected to become applied as effective auxiliary methods for treating oral diseases. To support the clinical application of magnetic fields, this article reviews the applications of magnetic fields in the oral cavity, the biological effects on bone cells and the molecular mechanisms through which magnetic fields regulate bone metabolism. The biological effects of magnetic fields on bone cells include promoting osteogenesis by osteoblasts and mesenchymal stem cells and inhibiting bone resorption by osteoclasts. At the molecular level, bone cells sense and respond to magnetic stimulation, and through various mechanisms, such as displacement currents, Lorentz forces, and free radical pair effects, stimuli are transformed into biologically recognizable electrical signals that activate complex downstream signaling pathways, such as the P2 purinergic receptor signaling pathway, adenosine receptor signaling pathway, transforming growth factor-β receptor signaling pathway, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, and Notch pathway. In addition, magnetic parameters, which are the factors affecting the osteogenic effects of magnetic fields, are discussed. However, the mechanisms of the osteogenic effects of magnetic fields are unclear, and further studies of these mechanisms could provide effective strategies for bone regeneration and periodontal tissue regeneration. In addition, considering the target of magnetic field therapies, combination with other drugs could lead to new strategies for the treatment of oral diseases

Cardioprotection Effects of Sevoflurane by Regulating the Pathway of Neuroactive Ligand-Receptor Interaction in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

    Get PDF
This study was designed to identify attractor modules and further reveal the potential biological processes involving in sevoflurane-induced anesthesia in patients treated with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Microarray profile data (ID: E-GEOD-4386) on atrial samples obtained from patients receiving anesthetic gas sevoflurane prior to and following CABG procedure were downloaded from EMBL-EBI database for further analysis. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks of baseline and sevoflurane groups were inferred and reweighted according to Spearman correlation coefficient (SCC), followed by systematic modules inference using clique-merging approach. Subsequently, attract method was utilized to explore attractor modules. Finally, pathway enrichment analyses for genes in the attractor modules were implemented to illuminate the biological processes in sevoflurane group. Using clique-merging approach, 27 and 36 modules were obtained from the PPI networks of baseline and sevoflurane-treated samples, respectively. By comparing with the baseline condition, 5 module pairs with the same gene composition were identified. Subsequently, 1 out of 5 modules was identified as an attractor based on attract method. Additionally, pathway analysis indicated that genes in the attractor module were associated with neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction. Accordingly, sevoflurane might exert important functions in cardioprotection in patients following CABG, partially through regulating the pathway of neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction
