    Service Deployment Model on Shared Virtual Network Functions With Flow Partition

    Network operators can operate services in a flexible way with virtual network functions thanks to the network function virtualization technology. Flow partition allows aggregated traffic to be split into multiple parts, which increases the flexibility. This paper proposes a service deployment model with flow partition to minimize the service deployment cost with meeting service delay requirements. A virtual network function of a service is allowed to have several instances, each of which hosts a part of flows and can be shared among different services, to reduce the initial and proportional cost. We provide the mathematical formulation for the proposed model and transform it to a special case as a mixed integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) problem. A heuristic algorithm, which is called a flow partition heuristic (FPH), is introduced to solve the original problem in practical time by decomposing it into several steps; each step handles a convex problem. We compare the performances of proposed model with flow partition and conventional model without flow partition. We consider the formulated MISOCP problem with adopting a strategy of even splitting to divide flows in a special case, which is called an even spitting heuristic (ESH). The performances of FPH and ESH are compared in a realistic scenario. We also consider the formulated MISOCP problem as an original problem and compare it to an FPH-based heuristic algorithm with the even-splitting strategy (FPH-ES), in both realistic and synthetic scenarios. The numerical results reveal that the proposed model saves the service deployment cost compared to the conventional one. It improves the maximum admissible traffic scale by 23% in average in our examined cases. We observe that FPH outperforms ESH and ESH outperforms FPH-ES in terms of the service deployment cost in their own focused problems, respectively

    Overweight Risk and Parental Concerns of Risk for Chinese Preschoolers in the U.S., China and Taiwan

    Background and Purpose: The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated childhood obesity as a global epidemic. Parental factors such as perceptions of their child’s weight status, concerns about their child’s weight, parental feeding practices, and parents’ own weight status may be associated with increased obesity risk among preschool children. This study aims to explore factors related to body mass index (BMI) and parental concerns about their children’s weight among Chinese pre-school aged children in the U.S., China and Taiwan. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was utilized. One hundred children (ages 3-5) and their parents participated in the study. Parents completed a family eating and activity habit questionnaire, a child feeding practices survey, a child bdy shape pictorial list, and a demographic survey. Children had their weight and height measured. Results: Fathers’ elevated BMI was related to higher children’s BMI (R2 = .095, p = 005), especially among boys. Parent-reported food restriction practices, perception of their child being heavy, increased food monitoring, and higher children’s activity level were associated with increased concerns for a child’s weight (R2 = .43, p = 001). Conclusion: In contrast to literature that focuses on mothers, our study suggests that obesity prevention for Chinese fathers may assist in the obesity prevention efforts of their young children, especially among boys. In addition, parent education on healthy feeding practices for preschool children is warranted for preventing childhood obesity

    Cell responses to two kinds of nanohydroxyapatite with different sizes and crystallinities

Due to its good biocompatibility and osteoconductivity, all kinds of HA particles were prepared by different methods. Numerous reports demonstrated that the properties of HA affected its biological effects.Methods: Two kinds of nanohydroxyapatite with different sizes and crystallinities were obtained via a hydrothermal treatment method under different temperatures. It was found that at a temperature of 140°C, a rod-like crystal (n-HA1) with a diameter of 23 ± 5 nm, a length of 47 ± 14 nm, and crystallinity of 85% ± 5% was produced, while at a temperature of 80°C, a rod-like crystal (n-HA2) with a diameter of 16 ± 3 nm, a length of 40 ± 10 nm, and crystallinity of 65% ± 3% was produced. The influence of nanohydroxyapatite size and crystallinity on osteoblast viability was studied by MTT, scanning electron microscopy, and flow cytometry.Results: n-HA1 gave a better biological response than n-HA2 in promoting cell growth and inhibiting cell apoptosis, and also exhibited much more active cell morphology. Alkaline phosphatase activity for both n-HA2 and n-HA1 was obviously higher than for the control, and no significant difference was found between n-HA1 and n-HA2. The same trend was observed on Western blotting for expression of type I collagen and osteopontin. In addition, it was found by transmission electron microscopy that large quantities of n-HA2 entered into the cell and damaged the cellular morphology. Release of tumor necrosis factor alpha from n-HA2 was markedly higher than from n-HA1, indicating that n-HA2 might trigger a severe inflammatory response.Conclusion: This work indicates that not all nanohydroxyapatite should be considered a good biomaterial in future clinical applications.Keywords: nanohydroxyapatite, osteoblast-like cells, cell viability, cell differentiatio

    From Functional Space to Experience Space:Applying space syntax analysis to a museum in China

    Space syntax starts from the ontology of space to quantify the space and uses mathematical logic to reveal and describe the logic of the space structure.However, the application of space syntax analysis to museums in China has rarely been explored. In light of this, this study employs space syntax to analyse the Gulangyu Organ Museum (Xiamen, China) and uses the topological depth, visual graph analysis, and agent simulation to describe the structure of the museum space. Accordingly, several suggestions are proposed,including rearranging the layout of the museum’s functions and transforming the museum from functional space to experience space. This study can serve as a valuable reference for the application of space syntax in the design and optimization of space design and functional layout. We believe that the findings of this study can also be applied to other cultural institutions (e.g.,galleries) with similar characteristics

    Reforestation regulated soil bacterial community structure along vertical profiles in the Loess Plateau

    IntroductionReforestation is a widely used strategy for ecological restoration in areas facing ecological degradation. Soil bacteria regulate many functional processes in terrestrial ecosystems; however, how they respond to reforestation processes in surface and deep soils remains unclear.MethodsArtificial Robinia pseudoacacia plantation with different stand ages (8, 22, and 32 years) in a typical fallow forest on the Loess Plateau was selected to explore the differential response of soil bacterial community to reforestation in different soil depths (surface 0–200 cm, middle 200–500 cm, and deep 500-100 cm). Soil bacterial diversity, community composition and the co-occurrence patterns, as well as the functions were analyzed.Results and discussionThe results showed that alpha diversity and the presence of biomarkers (keynote species) decreased with the increasing soil depth, with a sharp reduction in family-level biomarker numbers in 500–1,000 cm depth, while reforestation had a positive impact on bacterial alpha diversity and biomarkers. Reforestation induced a more loosely connected bacterial community, as evidenced by an increase of 9.38, 22.87, and 37.26% in the average path length of the co-occurrence network in all three soil layers, compared to farmland. In addition, reforestation reduced the hierarchy and complexity but increased the modularity of the co-occurrence network in top and deep soil layers. Reforestation also led to enrichment in the relative abundance of functional pathways in all soil layers. This study sheds light on the strategies employed by deep soil bacteria in response to reforestation and underscores the significant potential of deep soil bacteria in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in the context of human-induced environmental changes

    Unleashing the Power of Prompt-driven Nucleus Instance Segmentation

    Nucleus instance segmentation in histology images is crucial for a broad spectrum of clinical applications. Current dominant algorithms rely on regression of nuclear proxy maps. Distinguishing nucleus instances from the estimated maps requires carefully curated post-processing, which is error-prone and parameter-sensitive. Recently, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) has earned huge attention in medical image segmentation, owing to its impressive generalization ability and promptable property. Nevertheless, its potential on nucleus instance segmentation remains largely underexplored. In this paper, we present a novel prompt-driven framework that consists of a nucleus prompter and SAM for automatic nucleus instance segmentation. Specifically, the prompter learns to generate a unique point prompt for each nucleus while the SAM is fine-tuned to output the corresponding mask for the prompted nucleus. Furthermore, we propose the inclusion of adjacent nuclei as negative prompts to enhance the model's capability to identify overlapping nuclei. Without complicated post-processing, our proposed method sets a new state-of-the-art performance on three challenging benchmarks.
