    Media as Other Information for Fundamental Valuation

    The media is an important information intermediary. We investigate the informational role of the media by examining whether media content, measured by the sentiment of news articles, contains information about a firm’s fundamental value beyond that conveyed in earnings, book value, and analyst forecasts. We show that incorporating media content into Ohlson’s (1995) residual income model generally improves its ability to predict future residual income, explain current stock prices, and predict future stock prices. Our results are strengthened when media coverage is higher and when media sentiment is more disperse

    The development of karst in Karst area leads to poor stability of stratum. If earthquake occurs, the area will produce destructive disaster. In order to improve the stability capacity of the grassroots in the region, this study investigates the seismic response of inter-story isolation structures considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) in three-dimensional earthquakes. A model of the inter-story isolation structure incorporating SSI was developed, and one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional ground motions were applied to compare the seismic response under different input conditions. A three-dimensional isolation system was introduced and compared with traditional horizontal isolation structures to address excessive tensile and compressive stresses on the isolation structure during three-dimensional ground motion. The results demonstrate that the seismic response to three-dimensional earthquakes surpasses one-dimensional and two-dimensional inputs. Furthermore, adding a three-dimensional isolation structure effectively isolates vertical ground motion and reduces structural seismic response. Moreover, it minimizes soil stresses on the foundation compared to traditional horizontal isolation structure, enhancing foundation stability. This study will provide theoretical value and practical guidance for the research on key technology of SSI base story isolation structure response in Karst Plateau 3D Seismic zone

    Does the Market Punish the Many for the Sins of the Few? The Contagion Effect of Accounting Restatements for Foreign Firms Listed in the United States

    In this article, we study the contagion effects of accounting restatements issued by foreign firms traded in the United States. Specifically, we predict and find that accounting restatements that negatively affect the share prices of the restating foreign firms raise investor concerns that nonrestating foreign firms from the same home countries have similar accounting issues, and therefore induce a negative stock market reaction to nonrestating home country peer firms. We refer to this as a restatement-induced home country contagion effect. On average, nonrestating home country peer firms experience a negative stock market return of approximately 20.69% over a 3-day window around the restatement announcement. Moreover, we hypothesize and show that the strength of the home market rule of law (ROL) affects investor assessment of the likelihood that peer firms have similaraccounting issues, and therefore affects the magnitude of the contagion. Specifically, nonrestating home country peer firms from countries with weak ROL experience an averagestock price decline of approximately 21.32%, whereas peer firms from strong ROL countries experience an average negative return of only 20.26% over the 3-day window around the restatement. These results suggest that restatements filed by weak ROL firms are perceivedto be more ‘‘contagious’’ than those filed by strong ROL firms

    Impact of fully rotating steel casing bored pile on adjacent tunnels

    Based on the theoretical model of a soil plug column, the stress analysis of the soil plug column during the spinning process of steel casing is carried out, and the critical depth of the soil column is determined using the stress and torsional shear ratio of the soil column. The effect of factors such as casing wall thickness, surface load, and steel casing spinning speed on the critical depth of soil columns has been explored, and more reasonable construction process parameters have been obtained quantitatively. Combined with the construction of small net distance test piles at a distance of 2.5 m from the tunnel, the impact of the construction process on the existing shield tunnel has been explored. The results indicate that during the construction process, when the wall thickness of the steel casing does not exceed 0.012 m, the surface load does not exceed 15 kPa, the spinning speed of the steel casing is maintained at 5/4/2/4 m/h or 5/3/2/3 m/h (corresponding to soil depths of 2.5/9.5/6/14 m), and the soil height of the soil column is controlled within 11 m, it is not easy to generate soil plug inside the steel casing, and the soil column has strong torsional shear resistance. According to the measured data of adjacent tunnels, it has been found that the construction method of fully rotating steel casing bored pile can effectively reduce the impact on adjacent shield tunnels, and has a good microdisturbance effect, which can control tunnel deformation not exceeding 1 mm and maintain within the warning value range

    Mine personnel fusion location system

    For problems that mine personnel location system based on traditional received signal strength indication (RSSI) fingerprint location algorithm had heavy workload in fingerprint database collection during off-line stage and was easily influenced by underground environment, and the location system based on pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) algorithm had accumulative error, a mine personnel fusion location system was proposed which was based on an improved RSSI fingerprint location algorithm and PDR algorithm. The system uses intelligent terminals consisting of GS1011 controller and MPU9150 inertial sensor to send the data of inertial sensor, RSSI and timestamp to location server on the ground through underground WiFi network. The location server fuses location information of RSSI fingerprinting location algorithm and PDR algorithm by use of extended Kalman filter, so as to realize underground personnel location. The test result shows that the average location error of the system is 1.79 m and smaller than the one of RSSI fingerprint location algorithm or PDR algorithm, and location accuracy satisfies underground personnel location requirement

    A Ratiometric Biosensor Containing Manganese Dioxide Nanosheets and Nitrogen-Doped Quantum Dots for 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid Monitoring

    Nanomaterials are desirable for sensing applications. Therefore, MnO2 nanosheets and nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were used to construct a ratiometric biosensor for quantification of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The MnO2 nanosheets drove the oxidation of colorless o-phenylenediamine to OPDox, which exhibits fluorescence emission peaks at 556 nm. The fluorescence of OPDox was efficiently quenched and the NCDs were recovered as the ascorbic acid produced by the hydrolyzed alkaline phosphatase (ALP) substrate increased. Owing to the selective inhibition of ALP activity by 2,4-D and the inner filter effect, the fluorescence intensity of the NCDs at 430 nm was suppressed, whereas that at 556 nm was maintained. The fluorescence intensity ratio was used for quantitative detection. The linear equation was F = 0.138 + 3.863·C 2,4-D (correlation coefficient R2 = 0.9904), whereas the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.013 and 0.040 μg/mL. The method was successfully employed for the determination of 2,4-D in different vegetables with recoveries of 79%~105%. The fluorescent color change in the 2,4-D sensing system can also be captured by a smartphone to achieve colorimetric detection by homemade portable test kit
