    Inherent properties of binary tetrahedral semiconductors

    A new approach utilising the concept of ionic charge theory has been used to explain the inherent properties such as lattice thermal conductivity and bulk modulus of 3,5 and 2,6 semiconductors. The lattice thermal conductivity of these semiconductors exhibit a linear relationship when plotted on a log scale against the nearest neighbour distance but fall on two straight lines according to the product of the ionic charge of the compounds. On the basis of this result a simple relationship of lattice thermal conductivity with bulk modulus is proposed and used to estimate the bulk modulus of these semiconductors. A fairly good agreement has been found between the experimantal and calculated values of these parameters for zinc blende structured solids.Comment: 6 pages, 19 reference

    IN VITRO COMPARISON OF THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF AZADIRACHTA INDICA LEAVES WITH GENTAMYCIN, AMPICILLIN, NITROFURANTOIN, AND COTRIMOXAZOLE ON BACTERIAL PATHOGENS ISOLATED FROM URINARY TRACT INFECTION PATIENTS

      Objective: In vitro comparison of the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of Azadirachta indica (neem) leaves with gentamycin, ampicillin, nitrofurantoin, and cotrimoxazole in bacterial pathogens isolated from urinary tract infection (UTI) patients.Methods: Ethanolic extract of neem leaves was prepared by the standard method. The antimicrobial activity against bacteria isolated from UTI patients was determined by agar well diffusion method and then mean zone of inhibition of neem extract was compared with a mean zone of inhibition of gentamycin, ampicillin, nitrofurantoin, and cotrimoxazole.Results: Among 200 samples which were included in the study, bacteria isolated were Escherichia coli (60%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (15%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11%), Enterococcus faecalis (5%), Proteus mirabilis (3%), and Staphylococcus aureus (6%). The result obtained was statistically analyzed by unpaired t-test. The difference in the mean diameter of the zone of inhibition between ethanolic extract of Azadirachta indica (neem) leaves and nitrofurantoin was statistically highly significant for K. pneumoniae (p<0.0001) and P. mirabilis (p=0.01) and insignificant for other bacteria. On comparing, the mean diameter of the zone of inhibition of ethanolic extract of A. indica (neem) leaves with ampicillin and cotrimoxazole, it was found to be statistically highly significant for all bacteria E. coli (p<0.0001), K. pneumoniae (p<0.0001), P. aeruginosa (p<0.0001) E. faecalis (p<0.001), and S. aureus (p<0.0001) expect P. mirabilis. The mean diameter of the zone of inhibition of ethanolic extract of A. indica (neem) leaves when compared with gentamycin was statistically highly significant for all the bacteria.Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of A. indica leaves has antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of A. indica leaves is comparable to nitrofurantoin for bacteria E. coli, P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis, and S. aureus. Ethanolic extract of A. indica leaves has similar antibacterial activity as ampicillin and cotrimoxazole for bacteria P. mirabilis. The antibacterial activity of gentamycin is less as compared to an ethanolic extract of A. indica leaves for all the bacteria

    Superior variety of anterior dislocation of the hip is a rare injury. Its occurrence with acetabular fractures has been documented infrequently. We report a case of superior dislocation of the hip with anterior column acetabular fracture.     An Optimized SWCSP Technique for Feature Extraction in EEG-based BCI System

    Brain-computer interface (BCI) is an evolving technology having huge potential for rehabilitation of patients suffering from disorders of the nervous system, besides  many other nonmedical applications. Multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used to provide input signals to a BCI system. Significant research in methodology employed to implement different stages of BCI system, has led to discovery of new issues and challenges. The raw EEG data includes artifacts from environmental and physiological sources, which is eliminated in preprocessing phase of BCI system. It is then followed by a feature extraction stage to isolate a few relevant features for further classification to a particular motor imagery (MI) activity. A feature extraction approach based on spectrally weighted common spatial pattern (SWCSP) is proposed in this paper to improve overall accuracy of a BCI system. The reported literature uses SWCSP for feature extraction, as it has outperformed other techniques. The proposed approach enhances its performance by optimizing its parameters. The independent component analysis (ICA) method is used for detection and removal of irrelevant data, while linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is used as a classifier. The proposed approach is executed on benchmark data-set 2a of BCI competition IV. It yielded classification accuracy of 70.6% across nine subjects, which is higher than all the reported approaches.&nbsp
