    CapsuleBot: A Novel Compact Hybrid Aerial-Ground Robot with Two Actuated-wheel-rotors

    This paper presents the design, modeling, and experimental validation of CapsuleBot, a compact hybrid aerial-ground vehicle designed for long-term covert reconnaissance. CapsuleBot combines the manoeuvrability of bicopter in the air with the energy efficiency and noise reduction of ground vehicles on the ground. To accomplish this, a structure named actuated-wheel-rotor has been designed, utilizing a sole motor for both the unilateral rotor tilting in the bicopter configuration and the wheel movement in ground mode. CapsuleBot comes equipped with two of these structures, enabling it to attain hybrid aerial-ground propulsion with just four motors. Importantly, the decoupling of motion modes is achieved without the need for additional drivers, enhancing the versatility and robustness of the system. Furthermore, we have designed the full dynamics and control for aerial and ground locomotion based on the bicopter model and the two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle model. The performance of CapsuleBot has been validated through experiments. The results demonstrate that CapsuleBot produces 40.53% less noise in ground mode and consumes 99.35% less energy, highlighting its potential for long-term covert reconnaissance applications.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, submitted to 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA).     All nonhomologous chromosomes and rearrangements in Saccharum officinarum × Saccharum spontaneum allopolyploids identified by oligo-based painting

    Modern sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp., 2n = 100~120) are complex polyploids primarily derived from interspecific hybridization between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum. Nobilization is the theory of utilizing wild germplasm in sugarcane breeding, and is the foundation for utilizing S. spontaneum for stress resistance. However, the exact chromosomal transmission remains elusive due to a lack of chromosome-specific markers. Here, we applied chromosome-specific oligonucleotide (oligo)-based probes for identifying chromosomes 1-10 of the F1 hybrids between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum. Then, S. spontaneum-specific repetitive DNA probes were used to distinguish S. spontaneum in these hybrids. This oligo- fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system proved to be an efficient tool for revealing individual chromosomal inheritance during nobilization. We discovered the complete doubling of S. officinarum-derived chromosomes in most F1 hybrids. Notably, we also found defective S. officinarum-derived chromosome doubling in the F1 hybrid Yacheng75-4191, which exhibited 1.5n transmission for all nonhomologous chromosomes. Altogether, these results highlight the presence of variable chromosome transmission in nobilization between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum, including 1.5n + n and 2n + n. These findings provide robust chromosome markers for in-depth studies into the molecular mechanism underlying chromosome doubling during the nobilization, as well as tracing chromosomal inheritance for sugarcane breeding

    Stabilizing a three-center single-electron metal–metal bond in a fullerene cage

    Trimetallic carbide clusterfullerenes (TCCFs) encapsulating a quinary M3C2 cluster represent a special family of endohedral fullerenes with an open-shell electronic configuration. Herein, a novel TCCF based on a medium-sized rare earth metal, dysprosium (Dy), is synthesized for the first time. The molecular structure of Dy3C2@Ih(7)-C80 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the encapsulated Dy3C2 cluster adopts a bat ray configuration, in which the acetylide unit C2 is elevated above the Dy3 plane by ∼1.66 Å, while Dy–Dy distances are ∼3.4 Å. DFT computational analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the endohedral cluster has an unusual formal charge distribution of (Dy3)8+(C2)2−@C806− and features an unprecedented three-center single-electron Dy–Dy–Dy bond, which has never been reported for lanthanide compounds. Moreover, this electronic structure is different from that of the analogous Sc3C2@Ih(7)-C80 with a (Sc3)9+(C2)3−@C806− charge distribution and no metal–metal bonding

    Ovarian tissue cryopreservation in the pediatric with rare diseases- experience from China’s first and the largest ovarian tissue cryobank

    BackgroundThere is limited information about the efficacy of ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) in children. In the present study, we report eight patients with rare diseases who underwent OTC in China’s first and largest ovarian tissue cryobank.ProcedureData from girls with rare diseases who underwent OTC between September 2020 and November 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. We also compared the number of cryopreserved cortex pieces, follicle number, and AMH in those with rare diseases and age-matched children with non-rare diseases who also underwent OTC in our cryobank.ResultsThe median age of the children was 5.88 ± 3.52 (range 2-13) years old. Unilateral oophorectomy was undertaken via laparoscopy in all of the children. The diseases in the 8 patients were: 4 mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS I two cases, IVA two cases), 1 Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), 1 Fanconi anemia (FA), 1 hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES), 1 Niemann-Pick disease. The number of cryopreserved cortex pieces was 17.13 ± 6.36, and the follicle count per 2 mm biopsy was 447.38 ± 524.35. No significant difference in age, the count of cryopreserved cortex pieces, follicle number per 2 mm biopsy, and AMH level was seen between the 20 children with non-rare diseases and those with rare diseases.ConclusionsThe reports help practitioners counsel girls with rare diseases about fertility preservation. The demand for OTC in pediatrics will likely grow as a standard of care

    Short sleep duration is associated with specific food intake increase among school-aged children in China: a national cross-sectional study

    Abstract Background The relationship between sleep duration and food intake is unclear. This study aims to examine the relationship among children aged 6–17 years in China. Methods The sample consisted of 70,519 children aged 6–17 years, which were randomly selected from 7 representative areas from China, from September to November, 2013. In the structured questionnaire, children reported daily sleep hours (less than 7 h, 7–9 h and more than 9 h), weekly food intake amount (including vegetables, fruit, sugar beverages and meat), physical activity and sedentary time. The relationship of sleep duration with vegetable, sugar beverage, fruit and meat intake was evaluated by multi-nominal logistic regression and multi-variable adjusted. Results A total of 62,517 children (51.6% boys) completed the study. Short sleep duration (SSD, < 7 h) was independently associated with increased sugar beverage intake (SBI, Odd Ratio, OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.19–1.40) but decreased vegetable (VI, OR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.90–0.98) & fruit intake (FI, OR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.88–0.99). Stratified by age and gender, SSD increased SBI for boys of both young (6–12 years) & older (13–17 years) groups and older girls (ORs: 1.25, 1.25, 1.49, 95% CI: 1.08–1.44, 1.04–1.50, 1.22–1.81, respectively), but decreased VI and FI for older girls (ORs: 0.84& 0.81, 95% CI: 0.74–0.96& 0.68–0.96, respectively). Conclusions Among school-aged children in China, short sleep duration was associated with increased risks of more sugar beverage intake among those younger and boys but less vegetable & fruit intake among those older and girls. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the causation in between

    Repetitive Sequence Barcode Probe for Karyotype Analysis in <i>Tripidium arundinaceum</i>

    The barcode probe is a convenient and efficient tool for molecular cytogenetics. Tripidium arundinaceum, as a polyploid wild allied genus of Saccharum, is a useful genetic resource that confers biotic and abiotic stress resistance for sugarcane breeding. Unfortunately, the basic cytogenetic information is still unclear due to the complex genome. We constructed the Cot-20 library for screening moderately and highly repetitive sequences from T. arundinaceum, and the chromosomal distribution of these repetitive sequences was explored. We used the barcode of repetitive sequence probes to distinguish the ten chromosome types of T. arundinaceum by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with Ea-0907, Ea-0098, and 45S rDNA. Furthermore, the distinction among homology chromosomes based on repetitive sequences was constructed in T. arundinaceum by the repeated FISH using the barcode probes including Ea-0663, Ea-0267, EaCent, 5S rDNA, Ea-0265, Ea-0070, and 45S rDNA. We combined these probes to distinguish 37 different chromosome types, suggesting that the repetitive sequences may have different distributions on homologous chromosomes of T. arundinaceum. In summary, this method provide a basis for the development of similar applications for cytogenetic analysis in other species

    Gender-dependent association between sleep duration and overweight incidence in CHINESE school children: a national follow-up study

    Abstract Background The relationship between sleep duration and overweight risk remains unexplored among Chinese children. This study aims to evaluate this association in a national investigation with school-aged population. Methods There were 18,302 normal weight children in this Chinese national study which conducted during 2013–2014 included in the research. Anthropometric measurements were performed both at baseline and after 6–9 month. Sleep duration, physical activity, food intake and social economic information were collected by self-report questionnaire. Overweight was defined according to the updated Chinese criterion. Cox regression was used to evaluate the relationships between sleep duration and overweight incidence with multivariable adjusted. Results In total, there were 443 new overweight cases recorded at the end of observation. Overweight incidence with greater than 9 h (long sleep duration, LSD), 7 to 9 h (middle sleep duration, MSD), and less than 7 h of sleep (short sleep duration, SSD) were 2.7, 3.1 and 3.3% respectively. Stratified by gender and compared with LSD, the hazard ratio (HR) of overweight for females with MSD was 1.60 (95% CI: 1.02–2.52). Stratified by age and gender, the HR in the group of MSD was 2.13 (1.20–3.77) in female aged 6–10 years and 0.24 (0.06–0.93) in female aged 15–17 years. Conclusion The association between short sleep duration and overweight is age- and gender dependent. In group of small age and elder age, girls’ adiposity states are independently associated with sleep duration. Sleep recommendation is a potential preventive action for overweight/obesity among girls

    Abnormalities of early folliculogenesis and serum anti-Müllerian hormone in chinese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Abstract Purpose To investigate abnormalities of early folliculogenesis and Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients, and to analyze the association between AMH and early-stage follicle densities (FD). Methods A total of 175 patients underwent ovarian tissue cryopreservation in the first official cryobank in China, of which 16 patients aged 30–40 years old were diagnosed with endometrial cancer (all without initial chemo/radiotherapy), including 5 patients with concurrent PCOS and the other 11 patients without. We obtained standard cortical biopsies to measure FD using calcein staining. Blood samples were collected before cryopreservation to evaluate AMH concentrations. Results PCOS showed nearly three times the primordial and primary FD than NPCOS (P = 0.027), as well as more secondary preantral follicles (P = 0.002). A significantly higher proportion of secondary preantral follicles and a lower proportion of primordial and primary follicles were observed in PCOS (P = 0.01). Furthermore, the AMH concentration in PCOS was four times higher than that in NPCOS (P = 0.003), which is significantly correlated with primordial and primary follicle densities (r = 0.855, P < 0.001) and secondary preantral follicle densities (r = 0.732, P = 0.007). Conclusions We found significant disorders of early folliculogenesis in PCOS, which showed close correlation with increased AMH concentrations. To our knowledge, abnormalities of early-stage follicles have been shown for the first time in ovarian tissue of Chinese PCOS women. We suppose that the elevated AMH level is associated with abnormalities of early folliculogenesis within the complex PCOS pathogenesis, which may explain why AMH has the potential to be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of PCOS. Our findings provide more implications for understanding the mechanism of PCOS, and new directions for further studies
