    Identities, selection, and contributions in a public-goods game

    The notions of one's social identity and group membership have recently become topics for economic theory and experiments, and recent research has shown the importance of identity in a wide array of economic environments. But predictions are unclear when there is some trade-off between one's identity (e.g., race, gender, handedness) and potential monetary considerations. We conduct a public-goods experiment in which we permit endogenous group-formation. In a 2x2 design, we vary whether people participate in a team-building exercise and whether some people receive an endowment twice as much as others receive. We find that when both identity and financial considerations are present, high-endowment participants are strongly attracted to each other, with one's word-task-group affiliation eclipsed by the opportunity to earn more. Nevertheless, the team-building exercise greatly increases the level of contribution whether or not one is linked to people from one's team-building exercise

    Eliciting real-life social networks: a guided tour

    This paper surveys some of the mechanisms that have been proposed by the experimental literature to elicit social networks. These mechanisms differ in their incentive structures, as well as the means of reward they employ. We compare these elicitation devices on the basis of the estimated differences in the characteristics of the induced networks, such as the number of (mutual) links, correspondence and accuracy. Our main conclusion is that the elicited network architecture is itself dependent on the structure (and the nature) of the incentives. This, in turn, provides the social scientist with guidelines on the most appropriate device to use, depending on her research objectives

    Social influence and position effects

    A wide range of personal choices rely on the opinions or ratings of other individuals. This information has recently become a convenient way of simplifying the decision process. For instance, in online purchases of products and services, the possible choices or alternatives are often characterized by their position in a certain presentation order (or list) and their popularity, derived from an aggregate signal of the behavior of others. We have performed a laboratory experiment to quantify and compare popularity (or social influence) and position effects in a stylized setting of homogeneous preferences, with a small number of alternatives but considerable time constraints. Our design allows for the distinction between two phases in the decision process: (1) how agents search (i.e., not only which alternatives are analyzed but also in which order) and (2) how they ultimately choose. We find that in this process there are significant popularity and position effects. Position effects are stronger than social influence effects for predicting the searching behavior, however, social influence determines to a larger extent the actual choice. The reason is that social influence generates a double effect; it directly affects the final choice (independently on what alternative has been searched more thoroughly) and indirectly alters choice through the searching behavior which, in turn, is also affected by popularity. A novelty of our approach is that we account for personal traits and provide an individual analysis of sensitivity to both social influence and position effects. Surprisingly, we find that overconfident individuals are more influenceable, whereas other personal characteristics (e.g., gender and risk aversion) do not play a significant role in this context

    Towards High-order Methods for Rotorcraft Applications

    This work presents CFD results obtained with an efficient, high-order, finite-volume scheme. The formulation is based on the variable extrapolation MUSCL-scheme, and high-order spatial accuracy is achieved using correction terms obtained through successive differentiation. The scheme is modified to cope with physical and multiblock mesh interfaces, so stability, conservativeness, and high-order accuracy are guaranteed. Results with the proposed scheme for steady flows, showed better wake and higher resolution of vortical structures compared with the standard MUSCL, even when coarser meshes were employed. The method was also demonstrated for unsteady flows using overset and moving grids for the UH-60A rotor in forward flight and the ERICA tiltrotor in aeroplane mode. The present method adds CPU and memory overheads of 47% and 23%, respectively, in performing multi-dimensional problems for routine computations

    Inequality aversion among Spanish gypsies: an experimental approach [Aversión a la desigualdad entre gitanos Españoles: un enfoque experimental]

    This paper presents a first attempt to measure inequality aversion among gypsies. We conducted an experiment among adult gypsies living at slums outside Vallecas (Madrid). To analyze this variable we use the mechanism provided by Kroll & Davidovitz (2003) among 38 voluntary participants. Results indicate that: i) 52.6% of the individuals are inequality averse; ii) there is a positive relationship between inequality aversion and some features of the population such as individual religious practice, marital status, family size, position in the hierarchy of the family or club association and, iii) neither wealth, nor participation in voluntary activities affect inequality aversion

    Dynamical analysis for a scalar-tensor model with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal couplings

    We study the autonomous system for a scalar-tensor model of dark energy with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal couplings. The critical points describe important stable asymptotic scenarios including quintessence, phantom and de Sitter attractor solutions. Two functional forms for the coupling functions and the scalar potential were considered: power-law and exponential functions of the scalar field. For the exponential functions the existence of stable quintessence, phantom or de Sitter solutions, allows an asymptotic behavior where the effective Newtonian coupling becomes constant. The phantom solutions could be realized without appealing to ghost degrees of freedom. Transient inflationary and radiation dominated phases can also be described.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures, to appear in EPJ
