Satellite Images Show the Movement of Floating _Sargassum_ in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean
The question of the origin, distribution and fate of the floating seaweed _Sargassum_ has fascinated sailors and scientists from the time of Columbus. Observations from ships are hampered by the large and variable area over which _Sargassum_ is dispersed. Here we use satellite imagery to present the first mapping of the full distribution and movement of the population of _Sargassum_ in the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic in the years 2002 to 2008. For the first time, we show a seasonal pattern in which _Sargassum_ originates in the northwest Gulf of Mexico in spring of each year, is advected into the Atlantic in about July, appearing east of Cape Hatteras as a "Sargassum jet", and ending northeast of the Bahamas in February of the following year. This pattern appears consistent with historical surveys. Future satellite observations will show whether this pattern repeats in all or most years

Turning the Tide on Persistent Rural Poverty: Blueprint for a Path Forward
It is the goal of NeighborWorks America to make every place a community of opportunity. Unfortunately, some areas are being left behind more than others as our global and national economies continue to shift. Rural communities are among them. The people who have toiled in the coal mines of Kentucky and West Virginia, as well as in the paper and textile mills in Maine and western North Carolina, have not fared well in the changing economy. Likewise, the historically disenfranchised Native Americans in the Southwest, Latinos in the border colonias and the residents of the disaster-plagued Delta are struggling to survive. Our country needs to bring opportunity back to these regions and their people.Although rural America accounts for less than 20 percent of the country's overall population, 85 percent of persistent-poverty counties are outside of metro areas. Yet at the same time, there are so many examples of people and organizations doing good work; they just need support and the resources to go to scale. Special attention clearly is required, and that's why we formed the Rural Initiative

Striking a balance between culture and fun: 'Quality' meets hitman genre in 'In Bruges'
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in New Review of Film and Television Studies, 9(2), 132 - 151, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/17400309.2011.556934.This paper gives an analysis of In Bruges (2008) that situates the film as a hybrid product offering a mixture of signifiers of cinematic âqualityâ and âlowerâ genre ingredients. This paper also considers the extent to which In Bruges offers a combination of tonal registers in which irony and detachment, as markers of distinction, are blended with a more mainstream-oriented appeal to emotional engagement on the part of the viewer, and considers how this might be related to the broader social and industrial contexts in which it appeared
