Molecular Sieving in Periodic Free-Energy Landscapes Created by Patterned Nanofilter Arrays

We present an experimental study of Ogston-like sieving process of rodlike DNA in patterned periodic nanofluidic filter arrays. The electrophoretic motion of DNA through the array is described as a biased Brownian motion overcoming periodically modulated free-energy landscape. A kinetic model, constructed based on the equilibrium partitioning theory and the Kramers theory, explains the field-dependent mobility well. We further show experimental evidence of the crossover from Ogston-like sieving to entropic trapping, depending on the ratio between nanofilter constriction size and DNA size

Development of a doorframe-typed swinging seedling pick-up device for automatic field transplantation

A doorframe-typed swing seedling pick-up device for automatic field transplanters was developed and evaluated in a laboratory. The device, consisting of a path manipulator and two grippers, can move the pins slowly to extract seedlings from the tray cells and return quickly to the pick-up point for the next extraction. The path manipulator was constructed with the creative design of type-â…¡ mechanism combination in series. It consists of an oscillating guide linkage mechanism and a grooved globoidal cam mechanism. The gripper is a pincette-type mechanism using the pick-up pins to penetrate into the root mass for seedling extraction. The dynamic analysis of the designed seedling pick-up device was simulated with ADAMS software. Being the first prototype, various performance tests under local production conditions were conducted to find out the optimal machine operation parameters and transplant production conditions. As the gripper with multiple fine pins was moved by the swing pick-up device, it can effectively complete the transplanting work cycle of extracting, transferring, and discharging a seedling. The laboratory evaluation showed that the pick-up device equipped with two grippers can extract 80 seedlings/min with a 90% success and a 3% failure in discharging seedlings, using 42-day-old tomato plantlets. The quality of extracting seedlings was satisfactory

Experimental Investigation on Compressive Toughness of the PVA-Steel Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites

In order to achieve the whole process control of crack formation of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) under loading and improve the mechanical properties of ECC, steel fibers are mixed into traditional ECC to get polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-steel hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HyFRCC). And the key parameters to affect the HyFRCC performance are PVA fiber content, steel fiber content, and aspect ratio of steel fiber. In order to investigate the mechanical properties of PVA-steel HyFRCC such as the compressive toughness, 15 PVA-steel HyFRCC specimens with different volume fraction of steel fiber and PVA fiber, together with 1 non-fibrous cementitious composites specimen and 3 ECC specimens with PVA fibers only for comparison were designed and uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Furthermore, the effect of fiber content, fiber type and fiber geometrical characteristic on the compressive toughness of HyFRCC were analyzed. The results show that PVA fiber content, steel fiber content and aspect ratio of steel fiber have little impact on the uniaxial compressive strength of the PVA-steel HyFRCC, while the peak strain, compressive toughness and the post-peak ductility of PVA-steel HyFRCC are improved significantly due to fiber hybridization. The formation of large scale cracks of ECC specimens after post-peak loading is restrained effectively with the addition of steel fiber. The mixture of PVA and steel fiber has a remarkable effect on the improvement of ECC compression toughness and crack control. It indicates that the energy dissipation and damage control capacity of the structural component with PVA-steel HyFRCC under seismic loading will be enhanced
