Relativistic symmetry breaking in light kaonic nuclei
As the experimental data from kaonic atoms and scatterings imply
that the -nucleon interaction is strongly attractive at saturation
density, there is a possibility to form -nuclear bound states or kaonic
nuclei. In this work, we investigate the ground-state properties of the light
kaonic nuclei with the relativistic mean field theory. It is found that the
strong attraction between and nucleons reshapes the scalar and vector
meson fields, leading to the remarkable enhancement of the nuclear density in
the interior of light kaonic nuclei and the manifest shift of the
single-nucleon energy spectra and magic numbers therein. As a consequence, the
pseudospin symmetry is shown to be violated together with enlarged spin-orbit
splittings in these kaonic nuclei.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
3D Imaging of a Phase Object from a Single Sample Orientation Using an Optical Laser
Ankylography is a new 3D imaging technique, which, under certain
circumstances, enables reconstruction of a 3D object from a single sample
orientation. Here, we provide a matrix rank analysis to explain the principle
of ankylography. We then present an ankylography experiment on a microscale
phase object using an optical laser. Coherent diffraction patterns are acquired
from the phase object using a planar CCD detector and are projected onto a
spherical shell. The 3D structure of the object is directly reconstructed from
the spherical diffraction pattern. This work may potentially open the door to a
new method for 3D imaging of phase objects in the visible light region.
Finally, the extension of ankylography to more complicated and larger objects
is suggested.Comment: 22 pages 5 figure
Terahertz Sources, Detectors, and Transceivers in Silicon Technologies
With active devices lingering on the brink of activity and every passive device and interconnection on chip acting as potential radiator, a paradigm shift from âtop-downâ to âbottom-upâ approach in silicon terahertz (THz) circuit design is clearly evident as we witness orders-of-magnitude improvements of silicon THz circuits in terms of output power, phase noise, and sensitivity since their inception around 2010. That is, the once clear boundary between devices, circuits, and function blocks is getting blurrier as we push the devices toward their limits. And when all else fails to meet the system requirements, which is often the case, a logical step forward is to scale these THz circuits to arrays. This makes a lot of sense in the terahertz region considering the relatively efficient on-chip THz antennas and the reduced size of arrays with half-wavelength pitch. This chapter begins with the derivation of conditions for maximizing power gain of active devices. Discussions of circuit topologies for THz sources, detectors, and transceivers with emphasis on their efficacy and scalability ensue, and this chapter concludes with a brief survey of interface options for channeling THz energy out of the chip
Offshore Wind Resources Assessment from Multiple Satellite Data and WRF Modeling over South China Sea
Using accurate inputs of wind speed is crucial in wind resource assessment, as predicted power is proportional to the wind speed cubed. This study outlines a methodology for combining multiple ocean satellite winds and winds from WRF simulations in order to acquire the accurate reconstructed offshore winds which can be used for offshore wind resource assessment. First, wind speeds retrieved from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Scatterometer ASCAT images were validated against in situ measurements from seven coastal meteorological stations in South China Sea (SCS). The wind roses from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) and ASCAT agree well with these observations from the corresponding in situ measurements. The statistical results comparing in situ wind speed and SAR-based (ASCAT-based) wind speed for the whole co-located samples show a standard deviation (SD) of 2.09 m/s (1.83 m/s) and correlation coefficient of R 0.75 (0.80). When the offshore winds (i.e., winds directed from land to sea) are excluded, the comparison results for wind speeds show an improvement of SD and R, indicating that the satellite data are more credible over the open ocean. Meanwhile, the validation of satellite winds against the same co-located mast observations shows a satisfactory level of accuracy which was similar for SAR and ASCAT winds. These satellite winds are then assimilated into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model by WRF Data Assimilation (WRFDA) system. Finally, the wind resource statistics at 100 m height based on the reconstructed winds have been achieved over the study area, which fully combines the offshore wind information from multiple satellite data and numerical model. The findings presented here may be useful in future wind resource assessment based on satellite data
A Robust Optimization Approach to Emergency Vehicle Scheduling
The emergency vehicle scheduling problem is studied under the objective function to minimize the total transportation time with uncertain road travel time. Firstly, we build a stochastic programming model considering the constrained chance. Then, we analyze the model based on robust optimization method and get its equivalent set of uncertainty constraint, which has good mathematical properties with consideration of the robustness of solutions. Finally, we implement a numerical example to compare the results of robust optimization method and that of the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The case study shows that the proposed method achieves better performance on computational complexity and stability
Identification and association of the single nucleotide polymorphisms in calpain3 (CAPN3) gene with carcass traits in chickens
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study is to screen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of chicken <it>Calpain3 </it>(<it>CAPN3</it>) gene and to analyze the potential association between <it>CAPN3 </it>gene polymorphisms and carcass traits in chickens. We screened <it>CAPN3 </it>single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in 307 meat-type quality chicken from 5 commercial pure lines (S01, S02, S03, S05, and D99) and 4 native breeds from Guangdong Province (Huiyang Huxu chicken and Qingyuan Ma chicken) and Sichuan Province (Caoke chicken and Shandi Black-bone chicken), China.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two SNPs (11818T>A and 12814T>G) were detected by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) method and were verified by DNA sequencing. Association analysis showed that the 12814T>G genotypes were significantly associated with body weight (BW), carcass weight (CW), breast muscle weight (BMW), and leg muscle weight (LMW). Haplotypes constructed on the two SNPs (H1, TG; H2, TT; H3, AG; and H4, AT) were associated with BW, CW (<it>P </it>< 0.05), eviscerated percentage (EP), semi-eviscerated percentage (SEP), breast muscle percentage (BMP), and leg muscle percentage (LMP) (<it>P </it>< 0.01). Diplotype H1H2 was dominant for BW, CW, and LMP, and H2H2 was dominant for EP, SEP, and BMP.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We speculated that the <it>CAPN3 </it>gene was a major gene affecting chicken muscle growth and carcass traits or it was linked with the major gene(s). Diplotypes H1H2 and H2H2 might be advantageous for carcass traits.</p
