    Reflections on Political Policies and Statements in Arts and Literature in PRC

    This paper investigates the political policies and statements in arts and literature in the People’s Republic of China (1949-present). The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always taken arts and literature as essential parts of its political and ideological rule, and, as such, they constitute a distinct Chinese model or Chinese path in the studies of arts and literature in the modern world. This paper examines the four stages of the political discourse and statements of literature: (1) as an engine of the revolutionary machine in the Mao era (1949-76); (2) as an object of aesthetic appreciation in the decade of “Culture Fever” (the 1980s); (3) as a cultural commodity (1990-2010), and (4) as a vehicle of soft power in the Xi era since 2013

    Domain-Guided Conditional Diffusion Model for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

    Limited transferability hinders the performance of deep learning models when applied to new application scenarios. Recently, Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) has achieved significant progress in addressing this issue via learning domain-invariant features. However, the performance of existing UDA methods is constrained by the large domain shift and limited target domain data. To alleviate these issues, we propose DomAin-guided Conditional Diffusion Model (DACDM) to generate high-fidelity and diversity samples for the target domain. In the proposed DACDM, by introducing class information, the labels of generated samples can be controlled, and a domain classifier is further introduced in DACDM to guide the generated samples for the target domain. The generated samples help existing UDA methods transfer from the source domain to the target domain more easily, thus improving the transfer performance. Extensive experiments on various benchmarks demonstrate that DACDM brings a large improvement to the performance of existing UDA methods.Comment: Work in progres

    Rethinking the Value of Gazetteer in Chinese Named Entity Recognition

    Gazetteer is widely used in Chinese named entity recognition (NER) to enhance span boundary detection and type classification. However, to further understand the generalizability and effectiveness of gazetteers, the NLP community still lacks a systematic analysis of the gazetteer-enhanced NER model. In this paper, we first re-examine the effectiveness several common practices of the gazetteer-enhanced NER models and carry out a series of detailed analysis to evaluate the relationship between the model performance and the gazetteer characteristics, which can guide us to build a more suitable gazetteer. The findings of this paper are as follows: (1) the gazetteer improves most of the situations that the traditional NER model datasets are difficult to learn. (2) the performance of model greatly benefits from the high-quality pre-trained lexeme embeddings. (3) a good gazetteer should cover more entities that can be matched in both the training set and testing set.Comment: Accepted by NLPCC 202

    Relation between the Atmospheric Boundary Layer and Impact Factors under Severe Surface Thermal Conditions

    This paper reported a comprehensive analysis on the diurnal variation of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) in summer of Badain Jaran Desert and discussed deeply the effect of surface thermal to ABL, including the Difference in Surface-Air Temperature (DSAT), net radiation, and sensible heat, based on limited GPS radiosonde and surface observation data during two intense observation periods of experiments. The results showed that (1) affected by topography of the Tibetan Plateau, the climate provided favorable external conditions for the development of Convective Boundary Layer (CBL), (2) deep CBL showed a diurnal variation of three- to five-layer structure in clear days and five-layer ABL structure often occurred about sunset or sunrise, (3) the diurnal variation of DSAT influenced thickness of ABL through changes of turbulent heat flux, (4) integral value of sensible heat which rapidly converted by surface net radiation had a significant influence on the growth of CBL throughout daytime. The cumulative effect of thick RML dominated the role after CBL got through SBL in the development stage, especially in late summer, and (5) the development of CBL was promoted and accelerated by the variation of wind field and distribution of warm advection in high and low altitude

    The SDSS Coadd: A Galaxy Photometric Redshift Catalog

    We present and describe a catalog of galaxy photometric redshifts (photo-z's) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Coadd Data. We use the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique to calculate photo-z's and the Nearest Neighbor Error (NNE) method to estimate photo-z errors for \sim 13 million objects classified as galaxies in the coadd with r<24.5r < 24.5. The photo-z and photo-z error estimators are trained and validated on a sample of 83,000\sim 83,000 galaxies that have SDSS photometry and spectroscopic redshifts measured by the SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7), the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Galaxy Survey (CNOC2), the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe Data Release 3(DEEP2 DR3), the VIsible imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph - Very Large Telescope Deep Survey (VVDS) and the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. For the best ANN methods we have tried, we find that 68% of the galaxies in the validation set have a photo-z error smaller than σ68=0.031\sigma_{68} =0.031. After presenting our results and quality tests, we provide a short guide for users accessing the public data.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ.     Antimicrobial resistance surveillance of Escherichia coli from chickens in the Qinghai Plateau of China

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) may lead to worldwide epidemics through human activities and natural transmission, posing a global public safety threat. Colistin resistance mediated by the mcr-1 gene is the most prevalent among animal-derived Escherichia coli, and mcr-1-carrying E. coli have been frequently detected in central-eastern China. However, animal-derived E. coli with AMR and the prevalence of mcr-1 in the Qinghai Plateau have been rarely investigated. Herein, 375 stool samples were collected from 13 poultry farms in Qinghai Province and 346 E. coli strains were isolated, of which eight carried mcr-1. The AMR rates of the E. coli strains to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and tetracycline were all above 90%, and the resistance rates to ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, ceftiofur, and florfenicol were above 70%. Multidrug-resistant strains accounted for 95.66% of the total isolates. Twelve E. coli strains showed colistin resistance, from which a total of 46 AMR genes and 36 virulence factors were identified through whole-genome sequencing. The mcr-1 gene resided on the IncHI2, IncI2-type and IncY-type plasmids, and mcr-1 was located in the nikA-nikB-mcr-1-pap2 gene cassette (three strains) or the pap2-mcr-1-ISApl1 structure (one strain). Completed IncI2-type plasmid pMCR4D31–3 sequence (62,259 bp) revealed that it may cause the horizontal transmission of mcr-1 and may increase the risk of its spread through the food chain. Taken together, the AMR of chicken-derived E. coli in the plateau is of concern, suggesting that it is very necessary for us to strengthen the surveillance in various regions under the background of one health

    Is certification an effective legitimacy strategy for foreign firms in emerging markets?

    This study explores the effect of certification on profitability in a transition economy. Obtaining a certification is a strategic legitimacy action that positively affects a firm's profitability, specifically for a foreign firm in a transition economy, where institutions are less developed and stable. However, we argue that certification is particularly effective if legitimacy based on adaptation to local circumstances is weak. An analysis of data from 319 MNE subsidiaries in China over the period 1998-2009 largely supports our hypotheses. Certification is an effective strategic action which improves profitability. However, the strength of this effect is influenced by the level of marketization of the host region, the institutional quality in the home country, the density of the foreign firm community in the host country, the number of years the foreign firm has been in the host country, and the size of the foreign firm. These findings throw light on the role certification can play in helping firms overcome the liability of foreignness in a transition economy
