    Electrochemical Synthesis of Cu<sub>2</sub>O Concave Octahedrons with High-Index Facets and Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Activity

    High-index-faceted nano-/microcrystals exhibit enhanced catalytic activity and can thus serve as new-generation catalysts owing to their high density of low-coordinated atoms, leading to significantly enhanced catalytic activity. In this study, an effective electrochemical approach termed cyclic scanning electrodeposition (CSE) was developed to convert a thin Cu film into Cu<sub>2</sub>O concave octahedrons enclosed by 24 {344} high-index facets at room temperature with high yield and high throughput. The formation mechanism and the role of each ion in the electrolyte were systematically studied, which facilitated the design of a high-index-faceted metal/metal oxide through CSE. We also presented a general formula to identify the structure of an individual crystal enclosed by {<i>khh</i>} high-index facets based on the crystals oriented along three low-index zone axes and imaged by transmission electron microscopy. Experimental results demonstrated the Cu<sub>2</sub>O concave octahedrons to be highly efficient, cost-effective catalysts for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. This new technology is a promising route for the synthesis of metal or metal oxide crystals with high activity and has a great potential for several advanced applications, such as clean energy conversion

    The habitual use of laxative containing anthraquinone glycosides is considered to be the main cause of melanosis coli (MC). In the past, most scholars considered MC to be a benign and reversible disease. However, new evidence has emerged that MC may increase the risk of colon cancer. Here, we report a case of a 48-year-old woman diagnosed with MC and colon cancer. Through a literature review of previous basic and clinical studies, we summarize existing evidence that reveals the possible association between MC and colon cancer. Although this case cannot establish causality between MC and colon cancer, a high level of clinical vigilance for occurrence of colon cancer in patients with MC should be maintained.</p

    CD146 Deletion in the Nervous System Impairs Appetite, Locomotor Activity and Spatial Learning in Mice

    <div><p>Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are crucial effectors for the development and maintenance of the nervous system. Mutations in human CAM genes are linked to brain disorders and psychological diseases, and CAM knockout mice always exhibit similar behavioral abnormalities. CD146 is a CAM of the immunoglobulin superfamily that interacts with Neurite Outgrowth Factor and involved in neurite extension <i>in vitro</i>. However, little is known about its <i>in vivo</i> function in the nervous system. In this study, we used a murine CD146 nervous system knockout (CD146<sup>ns-ko</sup>) model. We found that the brains of some CD146<sup>ns-ko</sup> mice were malformed with small olfactory bulbs. CD146<sup>ns-ko</sup> mice exhibited lower body weights and smaller food intake when compared with wild type littermates. Importantly, behavior tests revealed that CD146<sup>ns-ko</sup> mice exhibited significant decreased locomotor activity and impaired capacity for spatial learning and memory. Our results demonstrate that CD146 is important for mammalian nervous system development and proper behavior patterns.</p></div

During the 7-day training period, time spent in finding the target of each mouse was recorded and analyzed with a repeated measures ANOVA. At the last day of probe test, distance swam (B) and time spent in each quadrant by the mice (C) were recorded and analyzed with Student’s t test.
