Lorentz Symmetry and the Internal Structure of the Nucleon
To investigate the internal structure of the nucleon, it is useful to
introduce quantities that do not transform properly under Lorentz symmetry,
such as the four-momentum of the quarks in the nucleon, the amount of the
nucleon spin contributed by quark spin, etc. In this paper, we discuss to what
extent these quantities do provide Lorentz-invariant descriptions of the
nucleon structure.Comment: 6 pages, no figur
Spin dynamics of electrons in the first excited subband of a high-mobility low-density 2D electron system
We report on time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements of spin coherence of
electrons in the first excited subband of a high-mobility low-density
two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/Al0.35Ga0.65As heterostructure. While
the transverse spin lifetime (T2*) of electrons decreases monotonically with
increasing magnetic field, it has a non-monotonic dependence on the
temperature, with a peak value of 596 ps at 36 K, indicating the effect of
inter-subband electron-electron scattering on the electron spin relaxation. The
spin lifetime may be long enough for potential device application with
electrons in excited subbands
Spin Dynamics in the Second Subband of a Quasi Two Dimensional System Studied in a Single Barrier Heterostructure by Time Resolved Kerr Rotation
By biasing a single barrier heterostructure with a 500nm-thick GaAs layer as
the absorption layer, the spin dynamics for both of the first and second
subband near the AlAs barrier are examined. We find that when simultaneously
scanning the photon energy of both the probe and pump beams, a sign reversal of
the Kerr rotation (KR) takes place as long as the probe photons break away the
first subband and probe the second subband. This novel feature, while stemming
from the exchange interaction, has been used to unambiguously distinguish the
different spin dynamics ( and ) for the first and second
subbands under the different conditions by their KR signs (negative for
and positive for ). In the zero magnetic field, by scanning
the wavelength towards the short wavelength, decreases in accordance
with the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) spin decoherence mechanism. At 803nm,
(450ps) becomes ten times longer than (50ps). However, the
value of at 803nm is roughly the same as the value of at
815nm. A new feature has been disclosed at the wavelength of 811nm under the
bias of -0.3V (807nm under the bias of -0.6V) that the spin coherence times
( and ) and the effective factors ( and
) all display a sudden change, due to the "resonant" spin exchange
coupling between two spin opposite bands.Comment: 9pages, 3 figure
Helicity-Flip Off-Foward Parton Distributions of the Nucleon
We identify quark and gluon helicity-flip distributions defined between
nucleon states of unequal momenta. The evolution of these distributions with
change of renormalization scale is calculated in the leading-logarithmic
approximation. The helicity-flip gluon distributions do not mix with any quark
distribution and are thus a unique signature of gluons in the nucleon. Their
contribution to the generalized virtual Compton process is obtained both in the
form of a factorization theorem and an operator product expansion. In deeply
virtual Compton scattering, they can be probed through distinct angular
dependence of the cross section.Comment: a few corrections made, references change
Regge Behavior of DIS Structure Functions
Building on previous works of the mid 1960's, we construct an integral
equation for forward elastic scattering (t=0) at arbitrary virtuality Q^2 and
large s=W^2. This equation sums the ladder production of massless intermediate
bosons to all orders, and the solution exhibits Regge behavior. The equation is
used to study scattering in a simple chi^2 phi scalar theory, where it is
solved appoximately and applied to the study of DIS at small x. We find that
the model can naturally describe the quark distribution in both the large x
region and the small x region dominated by Reggeon exchange.Comment: 13 pages with 5 figure
Harmonic fields on the extended projective disc and a problem in optics
The Hodge equations for 1-forms are studied on Beltrami's projective disc
model for hyperbolic space. Ideal points lying beyond projective infinity arise
naturally in both the geometric and analytic arguments. An existence theorem
for weakly harmonic 1-fields, changing type on the unit circle, is derived
under Dirichlet conditions imposed on the non-characteristic portion of the
boundary. A similar system arises in the analysis of wave motion near a
caustic. A class of elliptic-hyperbolic boundary-value problems is formulated
for those equations as well. For both classes of boundary-value problems, an
arbitrarily small lower-order perturbation of the equations is shown to yield
solutions which are strong in the sense of Friedrichs.Comment: 30 pages; Section 3.3 has been revise
Pion production in deeply virtual Compton scattering
Using a soft pion theorem based on chiral symmetry and a
resonance model we propose an estimate for the production cross section of low
energy pions in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process. In
particular, we express the processes in terms of
generalized parton distributions. We provide estimates of the contamination of
the DVCS observables due to this associated pion
production processes when the experimental data are not fully exclusive, for a
set of kinematical conditions representative of present or planned experiments
at JLab, HERMES and COMPASS.Comment: 50 pages, 22 figure
