Miniaturization and integration are the main trends in modern photonic technology. In this chapter, two kinds of micro-/nano liquid crystal (LC) layer–based tunable optical fiber interferometers are proposed. One fiber interferometer is the optical fiber gratings (LPGs), and the other one is the locally bent microfiber taper (LBMT). The working principles of the devices are theoretically analyzed. The preparation process and the functional properties of the devices are experimentally investigated as well

Case report: a cataract induced by bleomycin in a patient with testicular cancer

BackgroundBleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic with outstanding anti-tumor effects. A major adverse effect of bleomycin is lung fibrosis. However, the development of cataracts as a severe adverse effect has not been reported.Case summaryHerein, we describe the first case of cataract induced by bleomycin therapy in a 22-year-old male with testicular cancer. After surgical intervention and following five successive chemotherapy cycles of the BEP regimen, including bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin, the patient reported a gradual painless loss of vision, with substantial decline in visual ability, especially in the right eye. Following comprehensive eye examinations, a cataract was diagnosed. Eventually, the patient underwent phacoemulsification and received replacement of the intraocular lenses.ConclusionBleomycin can cause cataracts, which induces a significant loss of vision. Therefore, clinicians should observe early symptoms and properly adjust treatment to prevent aggravation of symptoms

BACKGROUND: Plasma neurofilament light (NfL) is an indicator of neurodegeneration and/or neuroaxonal injury in persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a wide range of other neurological disorders. Here, we characterized and compared plasma NfL concentrations in cognitively unimpaired (CU) late-middle-aged and older adults with two, one, or no copies of the APOE ε4 allele, the major genetic risk factor for AD. We then assessed plasma NfL associations with brain imaging measurements of AD-related neurodegeneration (hippocampal atrophy and a hypometabolic convergence index [HCI]), brain imaging measurements of amyloid-β plaque burden, tau tangle burden and white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV), and delayed and total recall memory scores. METHODS: Plasma NfL concentrations were measured in 543 CU 69 ± 9 year-old participants in the Arizona APOE Cohort Study, including 66 APOE ε4 homozygotes (HM), 165 heterozygotes (HT), and 312 non-carriers (NC). Robust regression models were used to characterize plasma NfL associations with APOE ε4 allelic dose before and after adjustment for age, sex, and education. They were also used to characterize plasma NfL associations with MRI-based hippocampal volume and WMHV measurements, an FDG PET-based HCI, mean cortical PiB PET measurements of amyloid-β plaque burden and meta-region-of-interest (meta-ROI) flortaucipir PET measurements of tau tangle burden, and Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) Delayed and Total Recall Memory scores. RESULTS: After the adjustments noted above, plasma NfL levels were significantly greater in APOE ε4 homozygotes and heterozygotes than non-carriers and significantly associated with smaller hippocampal volumes (r =  - 0.43), greater tangle burden in the entorhinal cortex and inferior temporal lobes (r = 0.49, r = 0.52, respectively), and lower delayed (r =  - 0.27), and total (r =  - 0.27) recall memory scores (p < 0.001). NfL levels were not significantly associated with PET measurements of amyloid-β plaque or total tangle burden. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma NfL concentrations are associated with the APOE ε4 allele, brain imaging biomarkers of neurodegeneration, and less good recall memory in CU late-middle-aged and older adults, supporting its value as an indicator of neurodegeneration in the preclinical study of AD

BackgroundCongenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) are the primary cause of end-stage renal disease in children, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the kidney function. Among CAKUT, renal pelvis dilatation (RPD) due to various causes has the highest detection rate, which can be detected early by postnatal ultrasound screening. Since 2010, the Children's Hospital of Fudan University (CHFU), together with the Minhang District Maternal and Child Health Hospital (MCH) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) of Minhang District has created a three-level referral system for urological ultrasound screening. This study aims to describe the operation of a three-level referral system for ultrasound screening of CAKUT and to select risk factors of RPD in high-risk children.MethodsThe operation of the three-level referral system was assessed by analyzing the screening volume, screening rate, referral rate, and follow-up rate; risk factors of RPD in high-risk children were selected by chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression.ResultsA total of 16,468 high-risk children were screened in ten years, and the screening volume was maintained at about 1,500 cases per year; the screening rate showed a linear increase, from 36.8% in 2010 to 98.2% in 2019; the referral rate from the CHCs to the MCH was 89.9% significantly higher after 2015 than that of 84.7% from 2010 to 2015; the follow-up rate after 2015 was 71.0% significantly higher than that of 46.3% from 2010 to 2015. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of RPD was 1.966 times higher in males than in females, and the risk of moderate to severe RPD was 2.570 times higher in males than in females; the risk of RPD in preterm children was 1.228 times higher than that of full-term children; and the risk of RPD was 1.218 times higher in twins than in singles.ConclusionsThe screening volume of the three-level referral system has remained stable over a decade, with significantly higher screening, referral, and follow-up rates. Males, preterm, and twins are risk factors of RPD in high-risk children; males are also risk factors for moderate to severe RPD in high-risk children

Resistance to autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease in an APOE3 Christchurch homozygote: a case report.

We identified a PSEN1 (presenilin 1) mutation carrier from the world's largest autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease kindred, who did not develop mild cognitive impairment until her seventies, three decades after the expected age of clinical onset. The individual had two copies of the APOE3 Christchurch (R136S) mutation, unusually high brain amyloid levels and limited tau and neurodegenerative measurements. Our findings have implications for the role of APOE in the pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease

Nanoelectropulse-driven membrane perturbation and small molecule permeabilization

BACKGROUND: Nanosecond, megavolt-per-meter pulsed electric fields scramble membrane phospholipids, release intracellular calcium, and induce apoptosis. Flow cytometric and fluorescence microscopy evidence has associated phospholipid rearrangement directly with nanoelectropulse exposure and supports the hypothesis that the potential that develops across the lipid bilayer during an electric pulse drives phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization. RESULTS: In this work we extend observations of cells exposed to electric pulses with 30 ns and 7 ns durations to still narrower pulse widths, and we find that even 3 ns pulses are sufficient to produce responses similar to those reported previously. We show here that in contrast to unipolar pulses, which perturb membrane phospholipid order, tracked with FM1-43 fluorescence, only at the anode side of the cell, bipolar pulses redistribute phospholipids at both the anode and cathode poles, consistent with migration of the anionic PS head group in the transmembrane field. In addition, we demonstrate that, as predicted by the membrane charging hypothesis, a train of shorter pulses requires higher fields to produce phospholipid scrambling comparable to that produced by a time-equivalent train of longer pulses (for a given applied field, 30, 4 ns pulses produce a weaker response than 4, 30 ns pulses). Finally, we show that influx of YO-PRO-1, a fluorescent dye used to detect early apoptosis and activation of the purinergic P2X(7 )receptor channels, is observed after exposure of Jurkat T lymphoblasts to sufficiently large numbers of pulses, suggesting that membrane poration occurs even with nanosecond pulses when the electric field is high enough. Propidium iodide entry, a traditional indicator of electroporation, occurs with even higher pulse counts. CONCLUSION: Megavolt-per-meter electric pulses as short as 3 ns alter the structure of the plasma membrane and permeabilize the cell to small molecules. The dose responses of cells to unipolar and bipolar pulses ranging from 3 ns to 30 ns duration support the hypothesis that a field-driven charging of the membrane dielectric causes the formation of pores on a nanosecond time scale, and that the anionic phospholipid PS migrates electrophoretically along the wall of these pores to the external face of the membrane

Experimental Study on Static Performance of Deployable Bridge Based on Cable-Strengthened Scissor Structures

The deployable bridge based on scissor structures is one of the effective methods to quickly restore traffic after natural and man-made disasters. Scissor structures have the advantages of high storage rate, lightweight, and convenient storage and transportation. However, when scissor structures are used as load-bearing structures, their stiffness and bearing capacity are low. In this study, a three-dimensional deployable bridge based on the cable-strengthened scissor structures was proposed. In addition to rapid expansion, steel cables were used to strengthen scissor structures to improve the stiffness and bearing capacity. Besides, the static loading comparative tests on cable-strengthened scissor structures and traditional scissor structures (cable-free scissor structures) were performed. The results show that the stiffness of the cable-free scissor structure is small, the bending moment of members is large, and the stress distribution is uneven. The stiffness of cable-strengthened scissor structure is significantly improved; the bending moment of members is significantly reduced; and the stress distribution in the member section is more uniform. It is proved that cables can be used to improve the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of scissor structures without affecting the deployability

Seed Treatment with Iron Chlorine E6 Enhances Germination and Seedling Growth of Rice

No full text
Iron chlorine e6 (ICE6), also known as iron dihydroporphine, is a new type natural plant growth regulator, which can improve some crops growth. At present, the effects of ICE6 on rice are still unclear. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the effect of ICE6 on rice growth. In this study, the effect of seed treatment with ICE6 on rice germination and seedling growth was evaluated. Rice seeds were soaked with the gradient concentration and gradient time of ICE6, respectively, and then the germination rate, growth indexes and chlorophyll content of rice were determined. The results showed seed soaking with ICE6 could improve rice seed germination, promote seedling growth and increase the chlorophyll content in plants, exhibiting a better growth promoting effect. The optimum soaking condition was 100–200 mg/L (concentration) and 24–48 h (time). The field experiment further verified the growth regulating effect of ICE6 priming on rice seedlings. After seed priming with ICE6, seed vigor became higher, and the activities of α-amylase and protease in germinating seeds increased. The increase of seed vigor might be an important reason that ICE6 improved the germination and seedling growth. In addition, we also found ICE6 treatment could enhance the regeneration ability of seedlings. This work demonstrated the germination and growth promoting effect of ICE6 on rice, and revealed its application potential in rice production. This seed priming technique was of great promotional value in the field
