    A study on implementation of WHO labour care guide in low-risk pregnant women and its impact on maternal and perinatal outcome

    Background: WHO Labour Care Guide is a labour monitoring tool that is developed to support respectful maternity to provide positive childbirth experience with evidence-based recommendations.Methods: This is an observational study comparing WHO labour care guide with WHO modified partograph in low-risk pregnant women who are in active phase of labour. The study included 80 labouring women who are divided into two groups with 40 participants in each group. In group 1 WHO modified partograph was used and in group 2 WHO labour care guide was used as a tool to assess the course of labour. Maternal and perinatal outcomes were analysed for both the groups.Results: There is no significant difference in the caesarean section rates and instrumental deliveries between the two groups. There is a rise in the incidence of PPH and meconium-stained liquor in group 2 compared to group 1. None of the participants had labour beyond 12 hours. NICU admissions were higher in group 2.Conclusions: In our study, the WHO modified partograph was found as equivalent to WHO labour care guide in identifying prolonged labor. Also, maternal and perinatal outcomes were equally identified by both types of partograph. WHO labour care guide did not prove to be beneficial over WHO modified partograph in terms of maternal and perinatal outcomes in Indian parturient women

    FORMULATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MICROSPHERES FOR THE TREATMENT OF FAMILIAL ADENOMATOUS POLYPOSIS

    Objective: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) also known as familial polyposis coli, is a hereditary disease characterized by progressive appearance of numerous polyps mainly in the large intestine. Polyps are initially benign but can easily become cancerous and as such it is a life threatening condition. Celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor is thought to induce cell death, and thus prevent or delay the growth of polyps. So in the present study celecoxib loaded microspheres were prepared using control release Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC K4M) and pH dependent polymer eudragit L 100-55 in different ratios (1:1 to 1:4) respectively. The main objective of the study is to identify the polymer concentration required to prevent the drug release in stomach region and promotes in intestinal region.Methods: Emulsification solvent evaporation method was selected for the preparation and all the optimized formulations were evaluated for drug-polymer interactions, percentage yield, micrometric properties, entrapment efficiency, particle size analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and in vitro dissolution study.Results: Drug and polymer interactions were evaluated by using FTIR and DSC. The FTIR spectrum and DSC thermograms stated that drug and polymer are compatible to each other. The micrometric properties of drug loaded microspheres were carried out and they were found to be as the angle of repose (18.26 °-40.69 °), bulk density (0.2846-0.3875), tapped density (0.4111-0.5428), Carr's index (9.66-14.77), Hausner's ratio (1.112-1.2642) which were within the limits. In vitro dissolution, drug release was found to be from 4.5 to 6.5 h for the prepared four formulations (F1–F4). From the kinetic data modeling the order of drug release was found to be zero order and korsmeyer-peppas with n value above 0.5 for all the formulations indicating non-fickian diffusion.Conclusion: All the result demonstrated that celecoxib microspheres can be effectively used in the treatment of familial adenomatous polyposi

    Abstract: Ultrasonic velocities and densities of the binary liquid mixtures of N-ethyl aniline with different toluenes like toluene, o-nitrotoluene and m-nitrotoluene have been measured at temperatures 303.15 and 308.15 K over the entire composition range. Various theories of ultrasonic velocity were applied to experimental values in evaluating the velocities using Nomoto's relation (U NR ), Impedence relation (U IR ), Ideal mixing relation (U IMR ), Jungie's relation (U JR )and Rao's specific velocity relation (U R ). The molecular interaction parameter (χ) has been evaluated from the values of experimental and theoretical velocities. The variation of this interaction parameter with the composition mixture has been discussed in terms of molecular interactions

    Clostridioides difficile binary toxin binding component (cdtb) increases virulence in a hamster model

    Background Clostridioides difficile is the leading cause of hospital-acquired gastrointestinal infection, in part due to the existence of binary toxin (CDT)-expressing hypervirulent strains. Although the effects of the CDT holotoxin on disease pathogenesis have been previously studied, we sought to investigate the role of the individual components of CDT during in vivo infection. Methods To determine the contribution of the separate components of CDT during infection, we developed strains of C difficile expressing either CDTa or CDTb individually. We then infected both mice and hamsters with these novel mutant strains and monitored them for development of severe illness. Results Although expression of CDTb without CDTa did not induce significant disease in a mouse model of C difficile infection, we found that complementation of a CDT-deficient C difficile strain with CDTb alone restored virulence in a hamster model of C difficile infection. Conclusions Overall, this study demonstrates that the binding component of C difficile binary toxin, CDTb, contributes to virulence in a hamster model of infection

    A high-precision interpolation method for pulsed radio signals from cosmic-ray air showers

    Analysis of radio signals from cosmic-ray induced air showers has been shown to be a reliable method to extract shower parameters such as primary energy and depth of shower maximum. The required detailed air shower simulations take 1 to 3 days of CPU time per shower for a few hundred antennas. With nearly 60,000 antennas envisioned to be used for air shower studies at the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), simulating all of these would come at unreasonable costs. We present an interpolation algorithm to reconstruct the full pulse time series at any position in the radio footprint, from a set of antennas simulated on a polar grid. Relying on Fourier series representations and cubic splines, it significantly improves on existing linear methods. We show that simulating about 200 antennas is sufficient for high-precision analysis in the SKA era, including e.g. interferometry which relies on accurate pulse shapes and timings. We therefore propose the interpolation algorithm and its implementation as a useful extension of radio simulation codes, to limit computational effort while retaining accuracy

    Using pulse-shape information for reconstructing cosmic-ray air showers and validating antenna responses with LOFAR and SKA

    The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is capable of measuring extensive air showers through their radio emission in the frequency range of 30–80 MHz, while the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will be able to expand this range to 50–350 MHz. A very important characteristic of cosmic rays is the mass of the primary particle, which is associated with the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum (max). The standard max reconstruction procedure with LOFAR involves the use of a library of CORSIKA/CoREAS simulations for a specific measured event and uses the energy deposited to the ground in terms of radio fluence. In this study, to extract information about shower development, not only the energy fluence is considered but the possibility of using information from the pulse shape is investigated in both frequency ranges (30–80 MHz and 50–350 MHz). The study of the pulse shape through the pulse agreement of measured data and simulations also provides a way to diagnose the proper functioning of individual LOFAR dipoles
