    Alloy Design to Prevent Intergranular Corrosion of Low-Cr Ferritic Stainless Steel with Weak Carbide Formers

    Effect of weak carbide formers, Mo, Mn and Si, on intergranular corrosion (IGC) of low-Cr ferritic stainless steel is analyzed after IGC test using TEM and three dimensional atom probe. The co-addition ofMo, Mn and Si to low-Cr ferritic stainless steel effectively prevents IGC by forming along grain boundaries CMn4MoSi intermetallic compounds, which act not only as carbon trap sites but also as diffusion barrier against solute Cr diffusion toward grain boundaries.     Word-level Symbolic Trajectory Evaluation

    Symbolic trajectory evaluation (STE) is a model checking technique that has been successfully used to verify industrial designs. Existing implementations of STE, however, reason at the level of bits, allowing signals to take values in {0, 1, X}. This limits the amount of abstraction that can be achieved, and presents inherent limitations to scaling. The main contribution of this paper is to show how much more abstract lattices can be derived automatically from RTL descriptions, and how a model checker for the general theory of STE instantiated with such abstract lattices can be implemented in practice. This gives us the first practical word-level STE engine, called STEWord.     Complete gate control of supercurrent in graphene p-n junctions

    In a conventional Josephson junction of graphene, the supercurrent is not turned off even at the charge neutrality point, impeding further development of superconducting quantum information devices based on graphene. Here we fabricate bipolar Josephson junctions of graphene, in which a p-n potential barrier is formed in graphene with two closely spaced superconducting contacts, and realize supercurrent ON/OFF states using electrostatic gating only. The bipolar Josephson junctions of graphene also show fully gate-driven macroscopic quantum tunnelling behaviour of Josephson phase particles in a potential well, where the confinement energy is gate tuneable. We suggest that the supercurrent OFF state is mainly caused by a supercurrent dephasing mechanism due to a random pseudomagnetic field generated by ripples in graphene, in sharp contrast to other nanohybrid Josephson junctions.     Stable and Efficient Nanofilm Pure Evaporation on Nanopillar Surfaces

    Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to systematically investigate how to maintain and enhance nanofilm pure evaporation on nanopillar surfaces. First, the dynamics of the evaporation meniscus and the onset and evolution of nanobubbles on nanopillar surfaces were characterized. The meniscus can be pinned at the top surface of the nanopillars during evaporation for perfectly wetting fluid. The curvature of the meniscus close to nanopillars varies dramatically. Nanobubbles do not originate from the solid surface, where there is an ultrathin nonevaporation film due to strong solid–fluid interaction, but originate and evolve from the corner of nanopillars, where there is a quick increase in potential energy of the fluid. Second, according to a parametric study, the smaller pitch between nanopillars (P) and larger diameter of nanopillars (D) are found to enhance evaporation but also raise the possibility of boiling, whereas the smaller height of nanopillars (H) is found to enhance evaporation and suppress boiling. Finally, it is revealed that the nanofilm thickness should be maintained beyond a threshold, which is 20 Å in this work, to avoid the suppression effect of disjoining pressure on evaporation. Moreover, it is revealed that whether the evaporative heat transfer is enhanced on the nanopillar surface compared with the smooth surface is also affected by the nanofilm thickness. The value of nanofilm thickness should be determined by the competition between the suppression effect on evaporation due to the decrease in the volume of supplied fluid and the existence of capillary pressure and the enhancement effect on evaporation due to the increase in the heating area. Our work serves as the guidelines to achieve stable and efficient nanofilm pure evaporative heat transfer on nanopillar surfaces

    Association of waist circumference with perception of own health in urban African males and females: the Sympathetic Activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans (SABPA) study

    Background: Current waist circumference (WC) cut-points of the Joint Statement Consensus (JSC) (male ≥ 94 cm, female ≥ 80 cm) were compared with a recently proposed WC cut-point (RPWC) (male ≥ 90 cm, female ≥ 98 cm). In this study, we aimed to compare the two cut-points to assess the association between central obesity and perception of own health.Method: We determined blood pressure and fasting bloods [glucose, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides] as metabolic syndrome markers for 171 urban teachers. Perception of own health was determined via the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) to indicate probable psychological distress or a psychiatric disorder or caseness (≥ 4).Results: The RPWC was an improved discrimination between the WC groups on perception of own health as reflected in the GHQ-28 subscales. In the male group, higher scores were found in the RPWC high WC group (≥ 90 cm) with regard to somatic symptoms, social dysfunction and GHQ-28 caseness, compared to those of the low WC groups (< 90 cm). Compared to the RPWC high WC females (≥ 98 cm), the low WC (< 98 cm) reflected significantly higher anxiety and sleeplessness subscale scores.Conclusion: Our results suggest that the RPWC (men 90 cm, women 98 cm), (determined in this African cohort when adding GHQ-28 caseness as a discriminatory variable between WC cut-point), distinguished better between WC groups based on their perception of own health than the JSC cut-point
