This article is a book review of The Streets Were Paved With Gold authored by Ken Auletta. The book covers New York City\u27s financial difficulties in the 70\u27s and warns that the crisis still exists. While the review is generally positive, it does note the book\u27s failure to analyze some of the deeper reasons behind the financial crisis. The article also calls for further decentralization of the political process and the establishment of new forms of citizen participation in decision making which would lead to a more viable economy

Avian Malaria Among House Sparrows: a Survey of Disease and Mosquito Vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) in Reed City, Michigan

Nine of 350 house sparrows caught in Reed City, Michigan, had malaria parasites detectable on Giemsa-stained thin films. All of the infected birds were juveniles, Parasitemias were too low to permit identification of the Plasmodium present. Collection of potential vector mosquitoes showed that Culex pipiens and Culex restuans were present, but in low numbers

Traction force microscopy on soft elastic substrates: a guide to recent computational advances

The measurement of cellular traction forces on soft elastic substrates has become a standard tool for many labs working on mechanobiology. Here we review the basic principles and different variants of this approach. In general, the extraction of the substrate displacement field from image data and the reconstruction procedure for the forces are closely linked to each other and limited by the presence of experimental noise. We discuss different strategies to reconstruct cellular forces as they follow from the foundations of elasticity theory, including two- versus three-dimensional, inverse versus direct and linear versus non-linear approaches. We also discuss how biophysical models can improve force reconstruction and comment on practical issues like substrate preparation, image processing and the availability of software for traction force microscopy.Comment: Revtex, 29 pages, 3 PDF figures, 2 tables. Decision making under time pressure: an independent test of sequential sampling models

Choice probability and choice response time data from a risk-taking decision-making task were compared with predictions made by a sequential sampling model. The behavioral data, consistent with the model, showed that participants were less likely to take an action as risk levels increased, and that time pressure did not have a uniform effect on choice probability. Under time pressure, participants were more conservative at the lower risk levels but were more prone to take risks at the higher levels of risk. This crossover interaction reflected a reduction of the threshold within a single decision strategy rather than a switching of decision strategies. Response time data, as predicted by the model, showed that participants took more time to make decisions at the moderate risk levels and that time pressure reduced response time across all risk levels, but particularly at the those risk levels that took longer time with no pressure. Finally, response time data were used to rule out the hypothesis that time pressure effects could be explained by a fast-guess strategy

Border Security: Understanding Threats at U.S. Borders

[Excerpt] The United States confronts a wide array of threats at U.S. borders, ranging from terrorists who may have weapons of mass destruction, to transnational criminals smuggling drugs or counterfeit goods, to unauthorized migrants intending to live and work in the United States. Given this diversity of threats, how may Congress and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) set border security priorities and allocate scarce enforcement resources? In general, DHS’s answer to this question is organized around risk management, a process that involves risk assessment and the allocation of resources based on a cost-benefit analysis. This report focuses on the first part of this process by identifying border threats and describing a framework for understanding risks at U.S. borders. DHS employs models to classify threats as relatively high- or low-risk for certain planning and budgeting exercises and to implement certain border security programs. Members of Congress may wish to use similar models to evaluate the costs and benefits of potential border security policies and to allocate border enforcement resources.
