Peer-to-Peer Secure Updates for Heterogeneous Edge Devices
We consider the problem of securely distributing software updates to large scale clusters of heterogeneous edge compute nodes. Such nodes are needed to support the Internet of Things and low-latency edge compute scenarios, but are difficult to manage and update because they exist at the edge of the network behind NATs and firewalls that limit connectivity, or because they are mobile and have intermittent network access. We present a prototype secure update architecture for these devices that uses the combination of peer-to-peer protocols and automated NAT traversal techniques. This demonstrates that edge devices can be managed in an environment subject to partial or intermittent network connectivity, where there is not necessarily direct access from a management node to the devices being updated
VERITAS Observations of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies
Clusters of galaxies are one of the few prominent classes of objects
predicted to emit gamma rays not yet detected by satellites like EGRET or
ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The detection of
Very High Energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays from galaxy clusters would
provide insight into the morphology of non-thermal particles and fields in
clusters. VERITAS, an array of four 12-meter diameter IACTs, is ideally
situated to observe the massive Coma cluster, one of the best cluster
candidates in the Northern Hemisphere. This contribution details the results of
VERITAS observations of the Coma cluster of galaxies during the 2007-2008

Fermipy: An open-source Python package for analysis of Fermi-LAT Data
Fermipy is an open-source python framework that facilitates analysis of data
collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Fermipy is built on the
Fermi Science Tools, the publicly available software suite provided by NASA for
the LAT mission. Fermipy provides a high-level interface for analyzing LAT data
in a simple and reproducible way. The current feature set includes methods for
extracting spectral energy distributions and lightcurves, generating test
statistic maps, finding new source candidates, and fitting source position and
extension. Fermipy leverages functionality from other scientific python
packages including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Astropy and is organized as a
community-developed package following an open-source development model. We

Towards Free Market Cloud Computing
Although cloud computing has made great inroads in terms of consumer adoption, we argue that the paradigm still has a long way to go to reach an economically efficient free market state. We highlight four key problems with the current cloud computing approach. These are (1) coarse granularity of service provision, (2) limited control of resources, (3) inadequate support for small providers and prosumers, and (4) vendor lockin via APIs. In this position paper, we briefly outline interesting work that may lead to a solution, in terms of moving towards a more market-based approach to cloud resource allocation

Anatomic Knowledge and Perceptions of the Adequacy of Anatomic Education Among Applicants to Orthopaedic Residency.
BackgroundThe time dedicated to the study of human anatomy within medical school curriculums has been substantially reduced. The effect of this on the knowledge of incoming orthopaedic trainees is unknown. The current study aimed to evaluate both the subjective perceptions and objective anatomic knowledge of fourth-year medical students applying for orthopaedic residency.MethodsA multicenter prospective study was performed that assessed 224 students during the course of their interview day for an orthopaedic residency. Participants provided demographic data and a subjective assessment of the quality of their anatomic education, and completed either an upper or lower extremity anatomic examination. Mean total scores and subscores for various anatomic regions and concepts were calculated.ResultsStudents on average rated the adequacy of their anatomic education as 6.5 on a 10-point scale. Similarly, they rated the level of importance their medical school placed on anatomic education as 6.2 on a 10-point scale. Almost 90% rated the time dedicated to anatomy as good or fair. Of six possible methods for learning anatomy, dissection was rated the highest.On objective examinations, the mean score for correct answers was 44.2%. This improved to 56.4% when correct and acceptable answers were considered. Regardless of anatomic regions or concepts evaluated, percent correct scores did not reach 50%. There were no significant correlations between performance on the anatomic examinations and either prior academic performance measures or the student's subjective assessment of their anatomic education.ConclusionsCurrent students applying into orthopaedic residency do not appear to be adequately prepared with the prerequisite anatomic knowledge. These deficits must be explicitly addressed during residency training to produce competent, safe orthopaedic surgeons
