    Convergent interviewing : a qualitative diagnostic technique for researchers

    Purpose &ndash; This paper aims to widen knowledge of and explore how convergent interviewing can be used to identify key issues within an organization.Design/methodology/approach &ndash; This paper introduces the convergent interviewing technique and describes the method of selecting the interview subjects. The construction of a round of interviews is explained. The content of the interviews is described and the particular probing nature of the questions demanded by the convergent interview process is explained. The ways to analyze the full set of interviews for groupings or categories is also described. The case study example of a broad research question about influences on work behaviors in a local government council is used to illustrate the convergent interviewing technique.Findings &ndash; The key issues revealed by using the technique can be subsequently used for a variety of research and consulting purposes and settings. Convergent interviewing is an effective research method, which conserves resources.Originality/value &ndash; Convergent interviewing enables researchers to determine the most important and/or key issues within a population rather than a full list of issues in an organization or barriers to change in a particular organizational context. <br /

    Using organizational justice to predict in-role and extra-role performance works in different ways for men relative to women

    Distributive, procedural, interpersonal and informational justices were included in this study of gender differences in in-role and extra-role behavior. Distributive justice predicted performance, organizational commitment and OCB for men but only performance and job satisfaction for women. Procedural justice predicted job satisfaction for men and did not predict any outcomes for women. Informational justice predicted job satisfaction for both male and female respondents. Informational justice predicted female but not male organizational commitment and in-role performance. Interpersonal justice predicted male but not female organizational citizenship behavior. The study demonstrates important distinctions between the four organizational justice types and how men and women respond differently to those distinctions. The differences in the drivers of in-role performance between men and women may also have practical implications for managers. For example, distributive justice was a direct in-role performance driver for both genders, but informational justice provides an incremental direct effect for women.<br /

    Intracortical Remodeling Parameters Are Associated With Measures of Bone Robustness

    Prior work identified a novel association between bone robustness and porosity, which may be part of a broader interaction whereby the skeletal system compensates for the natural variation in robustness (bone width relative to length) by modulating tissue‐level mechanical properties to increase stiffness of slender bones and to reduce mass of robust bones. To further understand this association, we tested the hypothesis that the relationship between robustness and porosity is mediated through intracortical, BMU‐based (basic multicellular unit) remodeling. We quantified cortical porosity, mineralization, and histomorphometry at two sites (38% and 66% of the length) in human cadaveric tibiae. We found significant correlations between robustness and several histomorphometric variables (e.g., % secondary tissue [R 2  = 0.68, P  < 0.004], total osteon area [R 2  = 0.42, P  < 0.04]) at the 66% site. Although these associations were weaker at the 38% site, significant correlations between histological variables were identified between the two sites indicating that both respond to the same global effects and demonstrate a similar character at the whole bone level. Thus, robust bones tended to have larger and more numerous osteons with less infilling, resulting in bigger pores and more secondary bone area. These results suggest that local regulation of BMU‐based remodeling may be further modulated by a global signal associated with robustness, such that remodeling is suppressed in slender bones but not in robust bones. Elucidating this mechanism further is crucial for better understanding the complex adaptive nature of the skeleton, and how interindividual variation in remodeling differentially impacts skeletal aging and an individuals' potential response to prophylactic treatments.     Combined density-functional and dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations for three-band Hubbard models for hole-doped cuprate superconductors

    Using a combined local density functional theory (LDA-DFT) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) dynamic cluster approximation approach, the parameter dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of several single-layer hole-doped cuprate superconductors with experimentally very different Tcmax is investigated. The parameters of two different three-band Hubbard models are obtained using the LDA and the downfolding Nth-order muffin-tin orbital technique with N=0 and 1 respectively. QMC calculations on 4-site clusters show that the d-wave transition temperature Tc depends sensitively on the parameters. While the N=1 MTO basis set which reproduces all three pdσpd\sigma bands leads to a d-wave transition, the N=0 set which merely reproduces the LDA Fermi surface and velocities does not

    The Prevalence of Latent Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection Based on an Interferon-γ Release Assay: A Cross-Sectional Survey Among Urban Adults in Mwanza, Tanzania.

    One third of the world's population is estimated to be latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (LTBI). Surveys of LTBI are rarely performed in resource poor TB high endemic countries like Tanzania although low-income countries harbor the largest burden of the worlds LTBI. The primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of LTBI in household contacts of pulmonary TB cases and a group of apparently healthy neighborhood controls in an urban setting of such a country. Secondly we assessed potential impact of LTBI on inflammation by quantitating circulating levels of an acute phase reactant: alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) in neighborhood controls. The study was nested within the framework of two nutrition studies among TB patients in Mwanza, Tanzania. Household contacts- and neighborhood controls were invited to participate. The study involved a questionnaire, BMI determination and blood samples to measure AGP, HIV testing and a Quantiferon Gold In tube (QFN-IT) test to detect signs of LTBI. 245 household contacts and 192 neighborhood controls had available QFN-IT data. Among household contacts, the proportion of QFT-IT positive was 59% compared to 41% in the neighborhood controls (p = 0.001). In a linear regression model adjusted for sex, age, CD4 and HIV, a QFT-IT positive test was associated with a 10% higher level of alpha-1-acid glycoprotein(AGP) (10(B) 1.10, 95% CI 1.01; 1.20, p = 0.03), compared to individuals with a QFT-IT negative test. LTBI is highly prevalent among apparently healthy urban Tanzanians even without known exposure to TB in the household. LTBI was found to be associated with elevated levels of AGP.     Velocity Correlations, Diffusion and Stochasticity in a One-Dimensional System

    We consider the motion of a test particle in a one-dimensional system of equal-mass point particles. The test particle plays the role of a microscopic "piston" that separates two hard-point gases with different concentrations and arbitrary initial velocity distributions. In the homogeneous case when the gases on either side of the piston are in the same macroscopic state, we compute and analyze the stationary velocity autocorrelation function C(t). Explicit expressions are obtained for certain typical velocity distributions, serving to elucidate in particular the asymptotic behavior of C(t). It is shown that the occurrence of a non-vanishing probability mass at zero velocity is necessary for the occurrence of a long-time tail in C(t). The conditions under which this is a t3t^{-3} tail are determined. Turning to the inhomogeneous system with different macroscopic states on either side of the piston, we determine its effective diffusion coefficient from the asymptotic behavior of the variance of its position, as well as the leading behavior of the other moments about the mean. Finally, we present an interpretation of the effective noise arising from the dynamics of the two gases, and thence that of the stochastic process to which the position of any particle in the system reduces in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: 22 files, 2 eps figures.     Ab Initio Calculation of Crystalline Electric Fields and Kondo Temperatures in Ce-Compounds

    We have calculated the band-ff hybridizations for Cex_xLa1x_{1-x}M3_3 compounds (x=1x=1 and x0x\rightarrow 0; M=Pb, In, Sn, Pd) within the local density approximation and fed this into a non-crossing approximation for the Anderson impurity model applied to both dilute and concentrated limits. Our calculations produce crystalline electric field splittings and Kondo temperatures with trends in good agreement with experiment and demonstrate the need for detailed electronic structure information on hybridization to describe the diverse behaviors of these Ce compounds.Comment: 13 pages(RevTeX), 3 Postscript figure

    Development and experimental validation of kinetic models for the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of Mg/Al based metal waste for energy storage

    With the increased use of renewable energy sources, the need to store large amounts of energy will become increasingly important in the near future. A cost efficient possibility is to use the reaction of recycled Mg waste with hydrogen as thermo-chemical energy storage. Owing to the high reaction enthalpy, the moderate pressure and appropriate temperature conditions, the broad abundance and the recyclability, the Mg/Al alloy is perfectly suitable for this purpose. As further development of a previous work, in which the performance of recycled Mg/Al waste was presented, a kinetic model for hydro- and dehydrogenation is derived in this study. Temperature and pressure dependencies are determined, as well as the rate limiting step of the reaction. First experiments are carried out in an autoclave with a scaled-up powder mass, which is also used to validate the model by simulating the geometry with the scaled-up experiments at different conditions
