Ovarian fibromas may be misdiagnosed as uterine myoma or ovarian malignant tumor. Laparoscopic examination appears to be an effective and safe surgical approach for managing ovarian fibromas

Aluminum nitride waveguide beam splitters for integrated quantum photonic circuits

We demonstrate integrated photonic circuits for quantum devices using sputtered polycrystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) on insulator. The on-chip AlN waveguide directional couplers, which are one of the most important components in quantum photonics, are fabricated and show the output power splitting ratios from 50:50 to 99:1. The polarization beam splitters with an extinction ratio of more than 10 dB are also realized from the AlN directional couplers. Using the fabricated AlN waveguide beam splitters, we observe the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 91.7 +(-) 5.66 %.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

The authors report a case of renal cell carcinoma in a right malrotated (horizontal axis) kidney. The patient was treated by hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. This is the first report of a horizontal axis malrotated kidney with renal cell carcinoma

Early Growth Response Factor-1 Is Associated With Intraluminal Thrombus Formation in Human Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to investigate the expression of early growth response-1 (Egr-1), a vascular pathogenic transcription factor, and its potential relationship with tissue factor (TF), a key player during the thrombus formation in the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) wall.BackgroundAlthough intraluminal thrombus is a common finding in human AAA, the molecular mechanism of the thrombus formation has not been studied.MethodsDuring the elective AAA repair, specimens were taken from the thrombus-covered and thrombus-free portions of the aneurysmal wall in each of 16 patients with AAA and analyzed to assess the differential expression of Egr-1 and TF. The proinflammatory and prothrombogenic activities of Egr-1 in vasculature were evaluated in vitro and in vivo by overexpressing it using adenovirus.ResultsThe expression of both Egr-1 and TF was significantly increased in the thrombus-covered wall compared with the thrombus-free wall, in which their up-regulation in the thrombus-covered wall was strongly correlated with each other (p < 0.005, r = 0.717). Adenoviral overexpression of Egr-1 in human vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells was found to up-regulate the expression of TF and inflammation-related genes. Moreover, Egr-1 overexpression in endothelial cells increased their adhesiveness to monocytes and also substantially promoted the intravascular thrombus formation in vivo, as shown in the inferior vena cava ligation experiment of the rat.ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates the differential up-regulation of Egr-1 in the thrombus-covered wall of human AAA and also suggests its possible contribution to the thrombogenic and inflammatory pathogenesis in human AAA

Chemical Stability of Conductive Ceramic Anodes in LiCl–Li2O Molten Salt for Electrolytic Reduction in Pyroprocessing

    Get PDF
AbstractConductive ceramics are being developed to replace current Pt anodes in the electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuels in pyroprocessing. While several conductive ceramics have shown promising electrochemical properties in small-scale experiments, their long-term stabilities have not yet been investigated. In this study, the chemical stability of conductive La0.33Sr0.67MnO3 in LiCl–Li2O molten salt at 650°C was investigated to examine its feasibility as an anode material. Dissolution of Sr at the anode surface led to structural collapse, thereby indicating that the lifetime of the La0.33Sr0.67MnO3 anode is limited. The dissolution rate of Sr is likely to be influenced by the local environment around Sr in the perovskite framework

Pneumopericardium as a Complication of Pericardiocentesis

    Get PDF
Pneumopericardium is a rare complication of pericardiocentesis, occurring either as a result of direct pleuro-pericardial communication or a leaky drainage system. Air-fluid level surrounding the heart shadow within the pericardium on a chest X-ray is an early observation at diagnosis. This clinical measurement and process is variable, depending on the hemodynamic status of the patient. The development of a cardiac tamponade is a serious complication, necessitating prompt recognition and treatment. We recently observed a case of pneumopericardium after a therapeutic pericardiocentesis in a 20-year-old man with tuberculous pericardial effusion

Role of intermediate phase for stable cycling of Na_7V_4(P_2O_7)_4PO_4 in sodium ion battery

    Get PDF
Sodium ion batteries offer promising opportunities in emerging utility grid applications because of the low cost of raw materials, yet low energy density and limited cycle life remain critical drawbacks in their electrochemical operations. Herein, we report a vanadium-based ortho-diphosphate, Na_7V_4(P_2O_7)_4PO_4, or VODP, that significantly reduces all these drawbacks. Indeed, VODP exhibits single-valued voltage plateaus at 3.88 V vs. Na/Na+ while retaining substantial capacity (>78%) over 1,000 cycles. Electronic structure calculations reveal that the remarkable single plateau and cycle life originate from an intermediate phase (a very shallow voltage step) that is similar both in the energy level and lattice parameters to those of fully intercalated and deintercalated states. We propose a theoretical scheme in which the reaction barrier that arises from lattice mismatches can be evaluated by using a simple energetic consideration, suggesting that the presence of intermediate phases is beneficial for cell kinetics by buffering the differences in lattice parameters between initial and final phases. We expect these insights into the role of intermediate phases found for VODP hold in general and thus provide a helpful guideline in the further understanding and design of battery materials
