Economic determinants of international labour migration in EU/EFTA region 1985-1999

This paper has been written within the framework of the research program 'Towards a dynamic scenario model for socio-economic determinants of population dynamics in Europe'. Within this research program, one PhD project is concerned with international migration. International migration hypotheses often lack a sound theoretical background. In the PhD project 'Economic Determinants of International Migration in Europe', an attempt is made to improve this theoretical background by quantifying the relationship between international migration and economic indicators. The aim of this paper is to estimate the influence of economic determinants on the most important international migration types in Europe in the period 1985-2000. Quantifying the influence of economic determinants on the most important international migration types in this period may contribute to the discussion about the demographic consequences of future economic development in Europe and extension of the European Union. Migrant flows, for which sufficient data are available will be used. The economic determinants that are estimated are GDP per capita, and unemployment. Furthermore, the effect of the migrant stock is taken into account as well. Pooled cross-sectional time series analysis will be used in separate models for each migration type.

Detection of ubiquityl-calmodulin conjugates with a novel high-molecular weight ubiquitylprotein-isopeptidase in rabbit tissues

The selective degradation of many proteins in eukaryotic cells is carried out by the ubiquitin system. In this pathway, proteins are targeted for degradation by covalent ligation to ubiquitin, a highly conserved protein [1]. Ubiquitylated proteins were degraded by the 26S protea-some in an ATP-depended manner. The degradation of ubiquitylated proteins were controlled by isopeptidase cleavage. A well characterised system of ubiquitylation and deubiquitylation is the calmodulin system in vitro [2]. Detection of ubiquityl-calmodulin conjugtates in vivo have not been shown so far. In this article we discuss the detection of ubiquitin calmodulin conjugates in vivo by incubation with a novel high-molecular weight ubiquitylprotein-isopeptidase in rabbit tissues. Proteins with a molecular weight of ubiquityl-calmodulin conjugates could be detected in all organs tested. Incubation with ubiquitylprotein-isopeptidase showed clearly a decrease of ubiquitin calmodulin conjugates in vivo with an origination of unbounded ubiquitin. These results suggest that only few ubiquitin calmodulin conjugates exist in rabbit tissues

Unintentional needlestick injuries in livestock production : a case series and review

Livestock producers and their employees sometimes experience unintentional needlestick injury (NSI) while vaccinating or injecting medications into animals. There is little published regarding the medical complications that can develop from this occupational exposure. The objectives of this study were to (1) perform a retrospective review of animal-related NSIs treated at a tertiary medical center of a rural state; and (2) review the risks of NSI and measures to decrease their occurrence. Medical records of patients with NSI related to animal injection were identified from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics database from 2002 to 2008 and reviewed. Nine patients received medical care for NSI that occurred while vaccinating farm animals. Most common NSI site was the nondominant hand and most occurred while attempting to inject the animal. Soft tissue infection was common and all nine received oral and/or intravenous antibiotics. Two thirds required hospital admission. Three required surgery and one had a bedside incision and drainage procedure. One patient had a serious inflammatory reaction with necrosis in the leg due to the oil adjuvant in the animal vaccine. Another case had a probable mycetoma with osteomyelitis and soft tissue infection due to the bacteria Streptomyces, which is a NSI complication not previously reported. Although medical complications from farm-related NSIs do not appear to be common, this case series illustrates how these injuries can be debilitating, costly, and lead to loss of work time and productivity. Producers and employees who inject livestock need to be aware of the risks and utilize measures to decrease unintentional NSI. <br /

Camouflaged angiogenic BMP-2 functions exposed by pico-paracrine biohybrids

The constant release of human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) in the picomolar range (Pico-Stat) from PDLLA-biohybrids led to the detection of intrinsic novel pro- and anti-angiogenic functions of this cytokine. As integrant part in this perspective of previous work, first evidence for the binding of rhBMP-2, as an inverse agonist, to allosteric angiogenic receptors in cocultures of human endothelial cells is reported
