SPECIES I: Spectroscopic Parameters and atmosphEric ChemIstriEs of Stars
The detection and subsequent characterisation of exoplanets are intimately
linked to the characteristics of their host star. Therefore, it is necessary to
study the star in detail in order to understand the formation history and
characteristics of their companion(s). Our aims were to develop a community
tool that allows the automated calculation of stellar parameters for a large
number of stars, using high resolution echelle spectra and minimal photometric
magnitudes, and introduce the first results in this work. We measured the
equivalent widths of several iron lines and used them to solve the radiative
transfer equation assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium to obtain the
atmospheric parameters (, [Fe/H], logg and ). We used
these values to derive the abundance of 11 chemical elements in the stellar
photosphere (Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn). Rotation and
macroturbulent velocity were obtained using temperature calibrators and
synthetic line profiles to match the observed spectra of five absorption lines.
Finally, by interpolating in a grid of MIST isochrones, we derived the mass,
radius and age using a Bayesian approach. SPECIES obtains bulk parameters that
are in good agreement with measured values from different existing catalogues,
including when different methods are used to derive them. We find excellent
agreement with previous works that used similar methodologies. We find
discrepancies in the chemical abundances for some elements with respect to
other works, which could be produced by differences in , or in
the line list or the atomic line data used to derive them. We also obtained
analytic relations to describe the correlations between different parameters,
and we implemented new methods to better handle these correlations, which
provides a better description of the uncertainties associated with the

Terrorist Attacks On Public Bus Transportation: A Preliminary Empirical Analysis, MTI Report WP 09-01
This report provides data on terrorist attacks against public bus transportation targets and serious crimes committed against such targets throughout the world. The data are drawn from the MTI database of attacks on public surface transportation, which is expanded and updated as information becomes available. This analysis is based on the database as of December 17, 2009. Data include the frequency and lethality with which buses, bus stations, and bus stops are attacked; the relationship between fatalities and attacks against bus targets and the relationship between injuries and attacks against those targets; how often, relative to other surface transportation targets, buses are attacked, first with all weapons and then with only explosive and incendiary devices; the relative lethality of attacks; and the distribution of attacks. It then presents some preliminary observations drawn from those data that can help stakeholders governments, transit managers, and employees to focus on the ways the most frequent and/or most lethal attacks are carried out as they consider measures to prevent or mitigate attacks that may be considered likely to happen in the United States
Electromagnetic Moments of the Baryon Decuplet
We compute the leading contributions to the magnetic dipole and electric
quadrupole moments of the baryon decuplet in chiral perturbation theory. The
measured value for the magnetic moment of the is used to determine
the local counterterm for the magnetic moments. We compare the chiral
perturbation theory predictions for the magnetic moments of the decuplet with
those of the baryon octet and find reasonable agreement with the predictions of
the large-- limit of QCD. The leading contribution to the quadrupole
moment of the and other members of the decuplet comes from one--loop
graphs. The pionic contribution is shown to be proportional to (and so
will not contribute to the quadrupole moment of nuclei), while the
contribution from kaons has both isovector and isoscalar components. The chiral
logarithmic enhancement of both pion and kaon loops has a coefficient that
vanishes in the limit. The third allowed moment, the magnetic octupole,
is shown to be dominated by a local counterterm with corrections arising at two

Propagation in the atmosphere of ultrahigh-energy charmed hadrons
Charmed mesons may be produced when a primary cosmic ray or the leading
hadron in an air shower collide with an atmospheric nucleon. At energies \ge
10^8 GeV their decay length becomes larger than 10 km, which implies that they
tend to interact in the air instead of decaying. We study the collisions of
long-lived charmed hadrons in the atmosphere. We show that (\Lambda_c,D)-proton
diffractive processes and partonic collisions of any q^2 where the charm quark
is an spectator have lower inelasticity than (p,\pi)-proton collisions. In
particular, we find that a D meson deposits in each interaction just around 55%
of the energy deposited by a pion. On the other hand, collisions involving the
valence c quark (its annihilation with a sea cbar quark in the target or
c-quark exchange in the t channel) may deposit most of D meson energy, but
their frequency is low (below 0.1% of inelastic interactions). As a
consequence, very energetic charmed hadrons may keep a significant fraction of
their initial energy after several hadronic interactions, reaching much deeper
in the atmosphere than pions or protons of similar energy.Comment: 13 pages, version to appear in PR
Enskog Theory for Polydisperse Granular Mixtures II. Sonine Polynomial Approximation
The linear integral equations defining the Navier-Stokes (NS) transport
coefficients for polydisperse granular mixtures of smooth inelastic hard disks
or spheres are solved by using the leading terms in a Sonine polynomial
expansion. Explicit expressions for all the NS transport coefficients are given
in terms of the sizes, masses, compositions, density and restitution
coefficients. In addition, the cooling rate is also evaluated to first order in
the gradients. The results hold for arbitrary degree of inelasticity and are
not limited to specific values of the parameters of the mixture. Finally, a
detailed comparison between the derivation of the current theory and previous
theories for mixtures is made, with attention paid to the implication of the

The Decuplet Revisited in PT
The paper deals with two issues. First, we explore the quantitiative
importance of higher multiplets for properties of the decuplet in
chiral perturbation theory. In particular, it is found that the lowest order
one--loop contributions from the Roper octet to the decuplet masses and
magnetic moments are substantial. The relevance of these results to the chiral
expansion in general is discussed. The exact values of the magnetic moments
depend upon delicate cancellations involving ill--determined coupling
constants. Second, we present new relations between the magnetic moments of the
decuplet that are independent of all couplings. They are exact at the

Simulating Impacts of Extreme Weather Events on Urban Transport Infrastructure in the UK
Urban areas face many risks from future climate change and their infrastructure will be placed under more pressure
due to changes in climate extremes. Using the Tyndall Centre Urban Integrated Assessment Framework, this paper
describes a methodology used to assess the impacts of future climate extremes on transport infrastructure in
London. Utilising high-resolution projections for future climate in the UK, alongside stochastic weather generators
for downscaling, urban temperature and flooding models are used to provide information on the likelihood of future
extremes. These are then coupled with spatial network models of urban transport infrastructure and, using thresholds
to define the point at which systems cease to function normally, disruption to the networks can be simulated.
Results are shown for both extreme heat and urban surface water flooding events and the impacts on the travelling
population, in terms of both disruption time and monetary cost
Increases in salience of ethnic identity at work: the roles of ethnic assignation and ethnic identification
To better understand how ethnicity is actually experienced within organisations, we examined reported increases in ethnic identity salience at work and responses to such increases. Thirty British black Caribbean graduate employees were interviewed about how and when they experienced their ethnic identity at work. The findings demonstrated that increased salience in ethnic identity was experienced in two key ways: through ‘ethnic assignation’ (a ‘push’ towards ethnic identity) and ‘ethnic identification’ (a ‘pull’ towards ethnic identity). We explore how and when ethnic assignation and ethnic identification occur at work, and their relevance to how workplaces are experienced by this group of minority ethnic employees. The findings suggest the need for further research attention to the dynamic and episodic nature of social identity, including ethnic identity, within organisations, and to the impact of such increases in salience of social identities on behaviour at work
Baryon Octet magnetic moments in PT: More on the importance of the Decuplet
We address the impact of treating the decuplet of spin-3/2 baryons as an
explicit degree of freedom in the chiral expansion of the magnetic moments of
the octet of spin-1/2 baryons. We carry out a complete calculation of the octet
moments to O(1/\lamchic), including decuplet contributions to the chiral loops.
In contrast to results of previous analyses, we find that inclusion of the
decuplet preserves the convergence behavior of the chiral expansion implied by
