    The Great Albatross Philippine Expedition and Its Fishes

    The Philippine Expedition of 1907-10 was the longest and most extensive assignment of the Albatross's 39-year career. It came about because the United States had acquired the Philippines following the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the bloody Philippine Insurection of 1899-1902. The purpose of the expedition was to surbey and assess the aquatic resources of the Philippine Islands. Dr. Hugh M. Smith, the Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, was the Director of the Expedition. Other scientific participants were Frederick M. Chamberlain, Lewis Radcliffe, Paul Bartsch, Harry C. Fasset, Clarence Wells, Albert Burrows, Alvin Seale, and Roy Chapman Andrews. The expedition consisted of a series of cruises, each beginning and ending in Manila and exploring a different part of the island group. In addition to the Philippines proper, the ship also explored parts of the Dutch East Indies and areas around Hong Kong and Taiwan. The expedition returned great quantities of fish and invertebrate speciments as well as hydrographic and fisheries data; most of the material was eventually deposited in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. The fisehs were formally accessioned into the museum in 1922 and fell under the car of Barton A. Bean, Assistant Curator of Fishes, who then recruited Henry W. Fowler to work up the material. Fowler completed his studies of the entire collection, but only part of it was ever published, due in part to the economic constraints caused by the Depression. The material from the Philippine Expedition constituted the largest single accession of fishes ever received by the museum. These speciments are in good condition today and are still being used in scientific research

    Promoting hydrogen production and minimizing catalyst deactivation from the pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming of biomass on nanosized NiZnAlOx catalysts

    Hydrogen production from the thermochemical conversion of biomass was carried out with nano-sized NiZnAlOx catalysts using a two-stage fixed bed reactor system. The gases derived from the pyrolysis of wood sawdust in the first stage were catalytically steam reformed in the second stage. The NiZnAlOx catalysts were synthesized by a co-precipitation method with different Ni molar fractions (5, 10, 15, 25 and 35%) and a constant Zn:Al molar ratio of 1:4. The catalysts were characterized by a wide range of techniques, including N2 adsorption, SEM, XRD, TEM and temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) and reduction (TPR). Fine metal particles of size around 10–11 nm were obtained and the catalysts had high stability characteristics, which improved the dispersion of active centers during the reaction and promoted the performance of the catalysts. The yield of gas was increased from 49.3 to 74.8 wt.%, and the volumetric concentration of hydrogen was increased from 34.7 to 48.1 vol.%, when the amount of Ni loading was increased from 5 to 35%. Meanwhile, the CH4 fraction decreased from 10.2 to 0.2 vol.% and the C2–C4 fraction was reduced from 2.4 vol.% to 0.0 vol.%. During the reaction, the crystal size of all catalysts was successfully maintained at around 10–11 nm with lowered catalyst coke formation, (particularly for the 35NiZn4Al catalyst where negligible coke was found) and additionally no obvious catalyst sintering was detected. The efficient production of hydrogen from the thermochemical conversion of renewable biomass indicates that it is a promising sustainable route to generate hydrogen from biomass using the NiZnAl metal oxide catalyst prepared in this work via a two-stage reaction system

    Distribution and function of HCN channels in the apical dendritic tuft of neocortical pyramidal neurons

    The apical tuft is the most remote area of the dendritic tree of neocortical pyramidal neurons. Despite its distal location, the apical dendritic tuft of layer 5 pyramidal neurons receives substantial excitatory synaptic drive and actively processes corticocortical input during behavior. The properties of the voltage-activated ion channels that regulate synaptic integration in tuft dendrites have, however, not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we use electrophysiological and optical approaches to examine the subcellular distribution and function of hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated nonselective cation (HCN) channels in rat layer 5B pyramidal neurons. Outside-out patch recordings demonstrated that the amplitude and properties of ensembleHCNchannel activity were uniform in patches excised from distal apical dendritic trunk and tuft sites. Simultaneous apical dendritic tuft and trunk whole-cell current-clamp recordings revealed that the pharmacological blockade of HCN channels decreased voltage compartmentalization and enhanced the generation and spread of apical dendritic tuft and trunk regenerative activity. Furthermore, multisite two-photon glutamate uncaging demonstrated that HCN channels control the amplitude and duration of synaptically evoked regenerative activity in the distal apical dendritic tuft. In contrast, at proximal apical dendritic trunk and somatic recording sites, the blockade of HCN channels decreased excitability. Dynamicclamp experiments revealed that these compartment-specific actions of HCN channels were heavily influenced by the local and distributed impact of the high density of HCN channels in the distal apical dendritic arbor. The properties and subcellular distribution pattern of HCN channels are therefore tuned to regulate the interaction between integration compartments in layer 5B pyramidal neurons

    Optical Constraints on an X-ray Transient Source in M31

    We have detected a transient X-ray source in the M31 bulge through a continuing monitoring campaign with the Chandra ACIS-I camera. The source was detected at R.A.=00:42:33.428 +/- 0.11'', Dec.=+41:17:03.37 +/- 0.11'' in only a single observation taken 2004 May 23. Fortuitous optical HST/ACS imaging of the transient location prior to the X-ray outburst, along with follow-up HST/ACS imaging during and after the outburst, reveals no transient optical source brighter than B (equivalent) = 25.5. The location of the source and its X-ray properties suggest it is a low mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Assuming the transient is similar to many Galactic X-ray novae, the X-ray luminosity of (3.9 +/- 0.5) X 1037^{37} erg s−1^{-1} and the upper-limit on the optical luminosity provide a prediction of <1.6 days for the orbital period of the binary system.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    The Philippines has been regarded as the center of the center of marine shorefish biodiversity, having the highest number of fish species per square area in the world. The blacknape large-eye bream, Gymnocranius satoi, has been reported to occur from Southern Japan, Taiwan to Northwestern Australia and to the Coral Sea, but has not previously been recorded from the Philippines. From 2011 – 2019, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) collaborated with the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution (NMNH/SI), USA, and the Old Dominion University (ODU), Virgina, USA, to inventory all commercial fish species sold in fish markets around the Philippines. During three (3) fish market surveys (Dumaguete City Market, Negros Oriental; Claveria Public Market, Cagayan, Northern Luzon; and Tabaco City Market, Albay, Southeastern Luzon in 2013, 2016 and 2017, respectively), we collected and eventually identified using morphological and DNA barcoding (COI) analysis, seven (7) specimens of G. satoi, representing the first records of this species from the country. Since the potential to discover new species and first records of fish species in the Philippines is high, further taxonomic study of the genus Gymnocranius is needed
