Embracing n-ary Relations in Network Science

Get PDF
Most network scientists restrict their attention to relations between pairs of things, even though most complex systems have structures and dynamics determined by n-ary relation where n is greater than two. Various examples are given to illustrate this. The basic mathematical structures allowing more than two vertices have existed for more than half a century, including hypergraphs and simplicial complexes. To these can be added hypernetworks which, like multiplex networks, allow many relations to be defined on the vertices. Furthermore, hypersimplices provide an essential formalism for representing multilevel part-whole and taxonomic structures for integrating the dynamics of systems between levels. Graphs, hypergraphs, networks, simplicial complex, multiplex network and hypernetworks form a coherent whole from which, for any particular application, the scientist can select the most suitable

The Suitability of Newton Reservoir to be Either a Coldwater or a Warmwater Fishery

Measurements were made of the water chemistry the distribution and relative abundance of net-plankton and the reproduction age and growth and food habits of largemouth bass in Newton Reservoir, Newton, Utah. Samples for chemical analysis were collected weekly from three sites and from several depths at each site. Plankton collections were made on a monthly basis. Data were compared with data in the literature and analyzed for possible ecological implications. Physical and chemical investigations of the water indicated favorable conditions for a warmwater fishery. The study of the surface net-plankton revealed a predominance of blue-green algae. The substratum of the littoral zone is characterized by material that has favored successful largemouth bass reproduction. Two and three year olds were dominant in the catch during the study. Growth in the reservoir was comparable to average rates of other studies. Analysis of stomach contents of largemouth bass revealed that they are largely

Calculated performance, stability and maneuverability of high-speed tilting-prop-rotor aircraft

The feasibility of operating tilting-prop-rotor aircraft at high speeds is examined by calculating the performance, stability, and maneuverability of representative configurations. The rotor performance is examined in high-speed cruise and in hover. The whirl-flutter stability of the coupled-wing and rotor motion is calculated in the cruise mode. Maneuverability is examined in terms of the rotor-thrust limit during turns in helicopter configuration. Rotor airfoils, rotor-hub configuration, wing airfoil, and airframe structural weights representing demonstrated advance technology are discussed. Key rotor and airframe parameters are optimized for high-speed performance and stability. The basic aircraft-design parameters are optimized for minimum gross weight. To provide a focus for the calculations, two high-speed tilt-rotor aircraft are considered: a 46-passenger, civil transport and an air-combat/escort fighter, both with design speeds of about 400 knots. It is concluded that such high-speed tilt-rotor aircraft are quite practical

Economic Evaluation of Wind Energy as an Alternative to Natural Gas Powered Irrigation

Get PDF
High natural gas prices have agricultural producers searching for alternative energy sources for irrigation. The economic feasibility of electric and hybrid (electric/wind) systems are evaluated as alternatives to natural gas powered irrigation. Texas Panhandle and Southern Kansas farms are assessed with a quarter-mile sprinkler system, three crops, and two pumping lifts. Breakeven points identify the price at which conversion from a natural gas irrigation system to an electric or hybrid system is cost effective. Results indicate electricity is a more feasible energy source for irrigation and policy changes such as net metering are necessary to make hybrid systems viable.electricity, irrigation, natural gas, wind energy, Agribusiness, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management, International Development, Land Economics/Use, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, Q12, Q20, Q42,
