On wild ramification in quaternion extensions
Quaternion extensions are often the smallest extensions to exhibit special
properties. In the setting of the Hasse-Arf Theorem, for instance, quaternion
extensions are used to illustrate the fact that upper ramification numbers need
not be integers. These extensions play a similar role in Galois module
structure. To better understand these examples, we catalog the ramification
filtrations that are possible in totally ramified extensions of dyadic number
fields. Interestingly, we find that the catalog depends, for sharp lower
bounds, upon the refined ramification filtration, which is associated with the
biquatratic subfield. Moreover these examples, as counter-examples to the
conclusion of Hasse-Arf, occur only when the refined filtration is, in two

Selective Inguinal Lymphadenectomy in the Treatment of Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Vulva
En bloc radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy has now been replaced by radical wide excision and selective inguinal lymphadenectomy based on the stage and location of invasive vulvar cancer. Early stage lateral cancers can be effectively treated by radical wide excision and ipsilateral superficial inguinal lymphadenectomy. Lymph node mapping using perilesional injection of radiocolloid and blue dye may identify sentinel lymph nodes which can be removed, thereby avoiding the morbidity of full inguinal lymphadenectomy in selected patients with early stage disease
Association of mesenchymal cells and immunoglobulins with differentiating epithelial cells
BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal-epithelial interactions play an important role in the physiology and pathology of epithelial tissues. Mesenchymal cells either associate with epithelium basement membrane [pericytes and perivascular monocyte-derived cells (MDC)] or reside within epithelium (MDC and T cells). Although intraepithelial mesenchymal cells were suggested to contribute to the epithelium physiology, their association with particular steps in differentiation of epithelial cells, interactions among themselves, and their fate remain unclear. We studied epitopes of mesenchymal cells and their products (immunoglobulins) in stratified epithelium of uterine ectocervix, which is one of the prototypes of complete cellular differentiation from stem into the aged cells. RESULTS: Perivascular CD14 primitive MDC associated with basal (stem) epithelial cells. Thy-1 pericytes of microvasculature secreted intercellular vesicles, which associated with Ki67 postmitotic epithelial cells expressing MHC class I. Intraepithelial T cells showed an association with veiled type MDC [dendritic cell (DC) precursors] among parabasal cells, and exhibited fragmentation after entering intermediate (mature) epithelial layers. Mature DC secreted CD68 and exhibited fragmentation after reaching mid intermediate layers. Binding of IgM was detected at the top of each layer: in the upper parabasal, upper intermediate, and most surface epithelial cells. IgG was confined to the entire superficial layer. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the phylogenetically and ontogenetically developed hierarchy of mesenchymal cells (MDC, pericytes, T cells) and immunoglobulins (IgM, IgG) accompanies differentiation of epithelial cells from immature into the mature and aged phenotype. Further studies of an involvement of mesenchymal cells in the regulation of tissue homeostasis may bring novel approaches to the prevention and therapy of tissue dysfunctions characterized by permanent tissue immaturity (muscular dystrophy) or accelerated aging (degenerative diseases)
The AMCIS 2003 Panels of IS Education-II: The Chicken and the Egg Debate: Positioning Database Content in the Information Systems Curriculum
This paper summarizes the results of a panel on how database content is covered in current university programs, with reference to the IS2002 model curriculum. Panelists included information systems (IS) faculty members who are actively involved in determining the coverage of database content at their institutions and in establishing academy-wide database content and technology resources. Topics included positioning database content in the overall curriculum, sequencing of content within the database course(s), and summary suggestions for tailoring database coverage at colleges and universities
Assignment of the human CRABP-II gene to chromosome 1q21 by nonisotopic in situ hybridization
Two highly conserved forms of cellular retinoic acid binding protein (CRABP-I and CRABP-II) have been described, and one, CRABP-II, is highly expressed in human skin. We have utilized a 10-kb fragment containing the human CRABP-II (hCRABP-II) gene (isolated from a human genomic library) to localize hCRABP-II to human chromosome 1 band q21 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Localization to 1q was confirmed by hybridization of a hCRABP-II cDNA clone against a human-mouse hybrid cell line containing a t(1;6)(q21;q13) translocation chromosome. In-Home Training for Fathers of Children with Autism: A Follow up Study and Evaluation of Four Individual Training Components
Literature regarding fathers of children with autism remains sparse, and because mothers are the more common intervening parent, few training methods have focused on fathers. Thus, we sought to evaluate effects of in-home training directed at fathers and their ability to train mothers in the same manner in which they were trained. Fathers were taught four skills commonly associated with in-home training interventions for parents of children with autism: following the child’s lead, imitation with animation, commenting on the child, and expectant waiting. Father skills were evaluated twice a week for 12 weeks during videotaped in-home father–child play sessions. Analyses included visual inspection of graphed data and statistical analyses of father skill acquisition, mother skill acquisition, and child behaviors with both parents. A multivariate repeated measures analysis of 18 dyads revealed significant increases in frequencies of fathers’ imitation with animation, expectant waiting, and commenting on the child. Child initiating rates increased significantly as did frequencies of child non-speech vocalizations. Analysis of mothers revealed significant increases in frequencies of imitation with animation, expectant waiting, and following the child’s lead. Child behaviors had similar results for father and mother sessions. Findings are consistent with those from our first study indicating that fathers can effectively implement skills that promote father–child social interactions and that children respond positively to this approach
Crossover Scaling in Dendritic Evolution at Low Undercooling
We examine scaling in two-dimensional simulations of dendritic growth at low
undercooling, as well as in three-dimensional pivalic acid dendrites grown on
NASA's USMP-4 Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment. We report new results on
self-similar evolution in both the experiments and simulations. We find that
the time dependent scaling of our low undercooling simulations displays a
cross-over scaling from a regime different than that characterizing Laplacian
growth to steady-state growth
A cryogenic rotation stage with a large clear aperture for the half-wave plates in the Spider instrument
We describe the cryogenic half-wave plate rotation mechanisms built for and
used in Spider, a polarization-sensitive balloon-borne telescope array that
observed the Cosmic Microwave Background at 95 GHz and 150 GHz during a
stratospheric balloon flight from Antarctica in January 2015. The mechanisms
operate at liquid helium temperature in flight. A three-point contact design
keeps the mechanical bearings relatively small but allows for a large (305 mm)
diameter clear aperture. A worm gear driven by a cryogenic stepper motor allows
for precise positioning and prevents undesired rotation when the motors are
depowered. A custom-built optical encoder system monitors the bearing angle to
an absolute accuracy of +/- 0.1 degrees. The system performed well in Spider

Abnormal expression of p27kip1 protein in levator ani muscle of aging women with pelvic floor disorders – a relationship to the cellular differentiation and degeneration
BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor disorders affect almost 50% of aging women. An important role in the pelvic floor support belongs to the levator ani muscle. The p27/kip1 (p27) protein, multifunctional cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, shows changing expression in differentiating skeletal muscle cells during development, and relatively high levels of p27 RNA were detected in the normal human skeletal muscles. METHODS: Biopsy samples of levator ani muscle were obtained from 22 symptomatic patients with stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and overlaps (age range 38–74), and nine asymptomatic women (age 31–49). Cryostat sections were investigated for p27 protein expression and type I (slow twitch) and type II (fast twitch) fibers. RESULTS: All fibers exhibited strong plasma membrane (and nuclear) p27 protein expression. cytoplasmic p27 expression was virtually absent in asymptomatic women. In perimenopausal symptomatic patients (ages 38–55), muscle fibers showed hypertrophy and moderate cytoplasmic p27 staining accompanied by diminution of type II fibers. Older symptomatic patients (ages 57–74) showed cytoplasmic p27 overexpression accompanied by shrinking, cytoplasmic vacuolization and fragmentation of muscle cells. The plasma membrane and cytoplasmic p27 expression was not unique to the muscle cells. Under certain circumstances, it was also detected in other cell types (epithelium of ectocervix and luteal cells). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report on the unusual (plasma membrane and cytoplasmic) expression of p27 protein in normal and abnormal human striated muscle cells in vivo. Our data indicate that pelvic floor disorders are in perimenopausal patients associated with an appearance of moderate cytoplasmic p27 expression, accompanying hypertrophy and transition of type II into type I fibers. The patients in advanced postmenopause show shrinking and fragmentation of muscle fibers associated with strong cytoplasmic p27 expression
