    A Shopping We Will Go...

I looked at my slim purse and once again explored its depths hopefully. A nickel, two pennies, a dime and a fifty-cent piece rewarded my search. With bargains all over town it was really deploring to be in a such a situation. Ah, happy thought! I\u27d go window shopping. That would be more fun anway, because I could choose whatever I liked regardless of price tags

Conditioning a Woman\u27s Probation on Her Using Norplant: New Weapon Against Child Abuse Backfires

Several courts have required female child abusers to choose between either going to prison or accepting the surgical implantation of Norplant as a condition of probation. In this Article, Mr. Jebson argues that a Norplant probation condition is invalid because it is both unreasonable and the probationer cannot give her informed consent to the procedure. Mr. Jebson argues that requiring a woman to choose between using Norplant and going to prison may violate her fundamental right to procreate, her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment, and her right to freely exercise her religion. Further, the Author also contends that requiring the use of Norplant may violate the Equal Protection Clause because similarly situated male and female child abusers are treated differently. As an alternative to Norplant, Mr. Jebson recommends a rehabilitative procedure which both male and female child abusers could receive as a condition of probation without infringing on fundamental rights

FOULING IN A CENTRITHERM EVAPORATOR WITH WHEY SOLUTIONS

    Get PDF
Fouling caused by sweet cheese whey and reconstituted whey powder solutions was studied in a Centritherm evaporator, the behaviour being estimated by measuring the change in the overall heat transfer coefficients with the time. It was found that there was no fouling detectable for the reconstituted whey powder solution. For sweet cheese whey, the fouling rate was linked strongly with the evaporating temperature and temperature difference. Visual observation showed that the deposit layer on the evaporator surface was very thin and soft, and like the type A milk deposit described by other investigators. A high velocity of liquid film delayed the formation of deposit on the surface. Some interactions between the evaporation temperature, feed flow rate, rotating speed and temperature difference are discussed. The fouling is caused by denaturation of bovine serum albumin in a second order rate reaction

UNEARTHING MATERIAL CULTURE: HOLOCAUST OBJECT BIOGRAPHIES AS EVIDENCE OF LIFE

    Get PDF
Archaeological material culture provides interpretations regarding past human life. Increasingly this material culture has been used to explore the personal life and the biographies of individuals immersed in the past (eg Joy 2009; Grassby 2005). This dissertation has applied this premise to material culture associated with the Holocaust and has explored the possibility of an affective dissemination format with the inclusion of object biographies. The research hypothesis stated “a Holocaust artefact when accompanied by an object biography has a greater emotional affect on an audience than an object without a biography”. The data from a questionnaire allowed a comparison of 120 participant emotional responses to four objects with a biography to the responses to six objects without a biography. The data also encouraged supplementary enquiries exploring the affect of different object types and how participant gender and age impacts on emotional responses to Holocaust artefacts. The research results demonstrated that there is a significant difference between the emotional responses for items with and without an object biography; items with an object biography produced a higher emotional response from participants. The results also demonstrated a correlation between Holocaust object type and emotional response; higher emotional responses did correlate with personal items, items associated with a specific group and sentimental items. Additionally, a weak but positive correlation with gender and emotional response was identified. A significant difference between male and female emotional responses was determined indicating that female participants had higher emotional response scores. Finally, a significant difference was identified between the three participant age groups and their emotional responses. This research considers the use of effective exhibits across Holocaust museum sites and observer engagement and empathy when presented with displays emphasising the scale of death. The experience of ‘shock’ may limit an emotional connection with an individual immersed in the Holocaust

Prevalence of malnutrition in HIV positive infants (age<18months) attending a clinic in Windhoek, Namibia

Magister Public Health - MPHBackground-Namibia has a high HIV and malnutrition burden. HIV increases the risk of malnutrition and malnutrition results in rapid progression of the disease and worsening malnutrition. Nutrition plays an important role in the management of an HIV positive child. Optimal nutrition delays disease progression, improves immune function and the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs thereby improving the quality of life of the child. Early identification of children at risk of malnutrition is therefore essential to prevent malnutrition in HIV positive children. Methodology-The study sought to determine the prevalence and the risk factors for malnutrition in 88 HIV positive children less than 18 months attending Hospital Paediatric ARV Clinic (HPAC). The study used quantitative methods. A questionnaire was administered to the child's caregiver to assess infant, caregiver and socio-economic risk factors for malnutrition after written consent had been obtained. The history of the patient was extracted from the HIV patient care booklet. Nutritional status was assessed using WHO standard growth charts in children and body mass index (BMI) in adults. Results- The study showed that 56.8% of children were wasted (14.8% had severe wasting), 52.3% were stunted (18.2% had severe stunting) and 69.3% underweight (20.5% were severely underweight). This level of malnutrition is much higher than the rates of 8% wasting, 29% stunting and 17% underweight in the general paediatric population. Malnutrition in children was associated with fewer number of working adults per family, frequent illnesses in the child, low level of caregiver education, caregiver unemployment, low household income and lack of adequate food in the family. Children of malnourished caregiver were more likely to be underweight. Conclusions- The results showed a high prevalence of malnutrition (56.8%wasting, 52.3%stunting and 69.3% underweight) among HIV positive infants attending the HPAC. The study showed that poverty and food insecurity were strongly associated with malnutrition in children. This therefore highlights the urgent need to address poverty to reduce malnutrition in the community. Although the study did not show any statistically significant association between feeding practices and malnutrition in children, health workers should encourage HIV positive mothers to breastfeed their infants as per the WHO and Namibian antiretroviral therapy guidelines (2010). Recommendations - There is need to train health workers to identify and manage malnourished children early. Linkages with social services must be improved and strengthened to help reduce poverty in the community.South Afric
