Managing Credit Booms and Busts: A Pigouvian Taxation Approach

    Get PDF
We study a dynamic model in which the interaction between debt ac- cumulation and asset prices magni es credit booms and busts. We find that borrowers do not internalize these feedback e¤ects and therefore suf- fer from excessively large booms and busts in both credit flows and asset prices. We show that a Pigouvian tax on borrowing may induce borrowers to internalize these externalities and increase welfare. We calibrate the model by reference to (i) the US small and medium-sized enterprise sector and (ii) the household sector, and nd the optimal tax to be countercycli- cal in both cases, dropping to zero in busts and rising to approximately half a percentage point of the amount of debt outstanding during booms.boom-bust cycles;financial crises;systemic externalities;macro-prudential regulation;precautionary savings

The plan for curriculum changes in the Division of Home Economics is a part of an all college curriculum program to investigate courses in each of the five major divisions. Senior home economics women last year were requested to give opinions about curriculum during their 4 years of training. These opinions were carefully analyzed and from them the need was recognized for organizing committees to study student problems

Model Title I Reading Program in Allignment with the Essential Academic Learning Requriements

    Get PDF
The purpose of the project was to design and develop a model Title I reading program for John Campbell Elementary School, Selah, Washington, in alignment with the state Essential Learning Requirements. To accomplish this purpose, current research and literature related to the fundamentals of reading/literacy and instructional strategies related to student mastery of this essential academic skill were reviewed. Additionally, related information/ materials from selected sources were obtained and analyzed. The model consists of a number of separately usable components, organized into four units: Student-Centered Classroom, Homogeneous Grouping, Building Fluency, and Phonics & Whole Language. Each unit contains its own assessment piece. The effectiveness of this model program is in part reflected by the author\u27s own success with the model in the classroom

Concoctions and Life-Long Connections: Women in the Kitchen

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the evolution of the American kitchen from the turn of the nineteenth century--historically, technologically, and socially--and the effect of such a transition on the lives of women. Following the introduction of such innovations as the kitchen sink, the cooking stove, the dishwasher, and the microwave oven, this thesis also examines the condition of women in the kitchen and observes the parallel growth, over time, of the kitchen and women\u27s lives. The kitchen evolves from a place of imposed drudgery to that of the enlightened center of the home. We see that, as decades pass, the kitchen becomes a place of brightness, considered to be the home\u27s heart, a place where food is shared, memories are created, and time with loved ones is savored. In conclusion, this thesis poses the following questions: what shape will the kitchen of the twenty-first century take? How will food traditions and communication continue, and how will they evolve? These topics are relevant as our new century enters its second decade

AGE-RELATED DIFFERENCES IN THE MOVEMENT PATTERNS OF ADOLESCENTS 11, 14, AND 17 YEARS OF AGE RISING TO STANDING FROM SUPINE ON A BED

    Get PDF
The purposes of this study were to determine: 1) if movement patterns (MP5) described for young adults rising from bed depict adolescents\u27 MP5, 2) if there are age-related differences in MP5 adolescents use to perform this task, 3) most common MP combinations (MCMPCs) of each age group, and 4) if individuals are likely to progress through proposed sequences in the same order. Sixty 11-, 14-, or 17-year-olds were videotaped during 10 trials of rising. MP5 demonstrated in each of four body regions were classified, and MP frequencies and MCMPCs were determined. One new near arm MP was observed. Age-related MP differences were present in each region. The MCMPCs observed in 11-, 14-, and 17- year-olds were described. One MP combination was common across all groups. Subjects varied among MP5 that were not proposed to be adjacent developmental steps. MP categories developed to describe adults\u27 movements can be used to describe adolescents\u27 movements. MP5 used by adolescents getting out of bed differ with age. Therapists can select age-appropriate MPs when teaching this activity
