    Damp Mergers: Recent Gaseous Mergers without Significant Globular Cluster Formation?

    Here we test the idea that new globular clusters (GCs) are formed in the same gaseous ("wet") mergers or interactions that give rise to the young stellar populations seen in the central regions of many early-type galaxies. We compare mean GC colors with the age of the central galaxy starburst. The red GC subpopulation reveals remarkably constant mean colors independent of galaxy age. A scenario in which the red GC subpopulation is a combination of old and new GCs (formed in the same event as the central galaxy starburst) can not be ruled out; although this would require an age-metallicity relation for the newly formed GCs that is steeper than the Galactic relation. However, the data are also well described by a scenario in which most red GCs are old, and few, if any, are formed in recent gaseous mergers. This is consistent with the old ages inferred from some spectroscopic studies of GCs in external systems. The event that induced the central galaxy starburst may have therefore involved insufficient gas mass for significant GC formation.     GRB Spikes Could Resolve Stars

    GRBs vary more rapidly than any other known cosmological phenomena. The lower limits of this variability have not yet been explored. Improvements in detectors would reveal or limit the actual rate of short GRBs. Were microsecond "spike" GRBs to exist and be detectable, they would time-resolve stellar mass objects throughout the universe by their gravitational microlensing effect.     Telemetry Studies of Mountain Ungulates in the Greater Yellowstone Area: A Progress Report

    We report on the progress that has been made on initiating long-term telemetry studies of mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) and bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis) in the GYA to better understand spatial ecology, demography, potential competition, and disease ecology. Six study areas representing a variety of ecological settings have been established throughout the GYA that include areas where bighorn sheep and mountain goats are sympatric as well as where each species exists in the absence of the other. We are employing a novel dual radio collar strategy and have successfully evaluated the use of drop net systems to capture groups of bighorn attracted to bait as an economical alternative to standard helicopter-based single animal capture techniques. Chemical immobilization of bighorn using BAM as an alternative to carfentanil was also tested and evaluated. A break-down Clover trap was designed for ease of transportation via horse for backcountry trapping and summer salt baiting for bighorn sheep and mountain goats was evaluated. We have initiated the first systematic disease sampling of mountain goats in the GYA using the standard protocols employed for bighorn sheep health assessments to evaluate the potential for mountain goats to influence the disease ecology of bighorn sheep in areas where they are sympatric. The research goals, strategies, and methodologies developed, tested, and employed on the collaborative GYA mountain ungulate research program are similar to those proposed for a long-term bighorn sheep research program in Montana

    Predicting blunt cerebrovascular injury in pediatric trauma: Validation of the Utah Score

    Risk factors for blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) may differ between children and adults, suggesting that children at low risk for BCVI after trauma receive unnecessary computed tomography angiography (CTA) and high-dose radiation. We previously developed a score for predicting pediatric BCVI based on retrospective cohort analysis. Our objective is to externally validate this prediction score with a retrospective multi-institutional cohort. We included patients who underwent CTA for traumatic cranial injury at four pediatric Level I trauma centers. Each patient in the validation cohort was scored using the “Utah Score” and classified as high or low risk. Before analysis, we defined a misclassification rate <25% as validating the Utah Score. Six hundred forty-five patients (mean age 8.6 ± 5.4 years; 63.4% males) underwent screening for BCVI via CTA. The validation cohort was 411 patients from three sites compared with the training cohort of 234 patients. Twenty-two BCVIs (5.4%) were identified in the validation cohort. The Utah Score was significantly associated with BCVIs in the validation cohort (odds ratio 8.1 [3.3, 19.8], p < 0.001) and discriminated well in the validation cohort (area under the curve 72%). When the Utah Score was applied to the validation cohort, the sensitivity was 59%, specificity was 85%, positive predictive value was 18%, and negative predictive value was 97%. The Utah Score misclassified 16.6% of patients in the validation cohort. The Utah Score for predicting BCVI in pediatric trauma patients was validated with a low misclassification rate using a large, independent, multicenter cohort. Its implementation in the clinical setting may reduce the use of CTA in low-risk patients

    Probing Spectral Line Gradients Beyond One Effective Radius in NGC 3610

    The outer region (0.75--1.25 r_e in the B-band) of the merger-remnant elliptical NGC 3610 is studied using extremely high signal to noise Keck spectra, with a supplementary spectrum of the galaxy center. Stellar population parameters -- age, [Z/H], [α\alpha/Fe] -- are measured in several apertures along the slit. Using the multi-index simultaneous fitting method of Proctor et al. (2004), no significant stellar population gradients are detected in the outer parts of the galaxy. The overall gradients relative to the galaxy center are consistent with those found in many other early-type galaxies, though the metallicity gradient is much steeper than would be expected if NGC 3610 formed in a major merger event.
