Self-aligned 0-level sealing of MEMS devices by a two layer thin film reflow process
Many micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) require a vacuum or controlled atmosphere encapsulation in order to ensure either a good performance or an acceptable lifetime of operation. Two approaches for wafer-scale zero-level packaging exist. The most popular approach is based on wafer bonding. Alternatively, encapsulation can be done by the fabrication and sealing of perforated surface micromachined membranes. In this paper, a sealing method is proposed for zero-level packaging using a thin film reflow technique. This sealing method can be done at arbitrary ambient and pressure. Also, it is self-aligned and it can be used for sealing openings directly above the MEMS device. It thus allows for a smaller die area for the sealing ring reducing in this way the device dimensions and costs. The sealing method has been demonstrated with reflowed aluminium, germanium, and boron phosphorous silica glass. This allows for conducting as well as non-conducting sealing layers and for a variety of allowable thermal budgets. The proposed technique is therefore very versatile
Characterization of a planar microcoil for implantable microsystems
This paper discusses the modelling, design and characterization of planar microcoils to be used in telemetry systems that supply energy to miniaturized implants. Parasitic electrical effects that may become important at a.c. frequencies of several megahertz are evaluated. The fabrication process and electrical characterization of planar receiver microcoils will be described, and it will be shown that a power of a few milliwatts is feasible.\u

Is Twitter a Public Sphere for Online Conflicts? A Cross-Ideological and Cross-Hierarchical Look
The rise in popularity of Twitter has led to a debate on its impact on public
opinions. The optimists foresee an increase in online participation and
democratization due to social media's personal and interactive nature.
Cyber-pessimists, on the other hand, explain how social media can lead to
selective exposure and can be used as a disguise for those in power to
disseminate biased information. To investigate this debate empirically, we
evaluate Twitter as a public sphere using four metrics: equality, diversity,
reciprocity and quality. Using these measurements, we analyze the communication
patterns between individuals of different hierarchical levels and ideologies.
We do this within the context of three diverse conflicts: Israel-Palestine, US
Democrats-Republicans, and FC Barcelona-Real Madrid. In all cases, we collect
data around a central pair of Twitter accounts representing the two main
parties. Our results show in a quantitative manner that Twitter is not an ideal
public sphere for democratic conversations and that hierarchical effects are

The liver in amoebic disease
During the past 8 years, 305 cases of amoebic disease have been examined at the Department of Diagnostic Radio-isotopes of the H. F. Verwoerd Hospital, Pretoria. Analysis of the data obtained by means of scintigraphy in 247 of these patients indicates that in vivo scintigraphy of the liver is a valuable method for the investigation of many aspects of the disease. Our observations on the localisation of the abscesses, the relationship between localisation and the frequency of complications, the macroscopical changes in the liver during the disease, the presence of a generalised reaction of the liver parenchyma to amoebae in some cases, and the healing rate of abscesses under different types of treatment, are reported in this article.S. The eta' meson from lattice QCD
We study the flavour singlet pseudoscalar mesons from first principles using
lattice QCD. With N_f=2 flavours of light quark, this is the so-called eta_2
meson and we discuss the phenomenological status of this. Using maximally
twisted-mass lattice QCD, we extract the mass of the eta_2 meson at two values
of the lattice spacing for lighter quarks than previously discussed in the
literature. We are able to estimate the mass value in the limit of light quarks

The electrolysis of water: An actuation principle for MEMS with a big opportunity
In this paper the theory of water electrolysis in a closed electrochemical cell, that contains two electrodes, an electrolyte and a pressure sensor is described. From the leakage and electrochemical experiments done with this macrocell it is possible to obtain information about the applicability of the electrochemical principle in a closed cavity, the choice of the electrodes and electrolyte, and different types of leakage. To control the pressure of the electrochemical actuator automatically, an electronic feedback system was connected to the cell. A value of the pressure is set and the regulator will actuate the electrochemical cell in such a way to get the desired pressure
Bias Voltage and Temperature Dependence of Hot Electron Magnetotransport
We present a qualitative model study of energy and temperature dependence of
hot electron magnetotransport. This model calculations are based on a simple
argument that the inelastic scattering strength of hot electrons is strongly
spin and energy dependent in the ferromagnets. Since there is no clear
experimental data to compare with this model calculations, we are not able to
extract clear physics from this model calculations. However, interestingly this
calculations display that the magnetocurrent increases with bias voltage
showing high magnetocurrent if spin dependent imaginary part of proper self
energy effect has a substantial contribution to the hot electron
magnetotransport. Along with that, the hot electron magnetotransport is
strongly influence by the hot electron spin polarization at finite
temperatures
