    On the Penrose Inequality for general horizons

    For asymptotically flat initial data of Einstein's equations satisfying an energy condition, we show that the Penrose inequality holds between the ADM mass and the area of an outermost apparent horizon, if the data are restricted suitably. We prove this by generalizing Geroch's proof of monotonicity of the Hawking mass under a smooth inverse mean curvature flow, for data with non-negative Ricci scalar. Unlike Geroch we need not confine ourselves to minimal surfaces as horizons. Modulo smoothness issues we also show that our restrictions on the data can locally be fulfilled by a suitable choice of the initial surface in a given spacetime.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, no figures.     Pressure effects on the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeAuSb2

    The f-electron compound CeAuSb2, which crystallizes in the ZrCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, orders antiferromagnetically between 5 and 6.8 K, where the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N depends on the occupancy of the Au site. Here we report the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of a high-quality crystal CeAuSb2 with T_N of 6.8 K, the highest for this compound. The magnetic transition temperature is initially suppressed with pressure, but is intercepted by a new magnetic state above 2.1 GPa. The new phase shows a dome shape with pressure and coexists with another phase at pressures higher than 4.7 GPa. The electrical resistivity shows a T^2 Fermi liquids behavior in the complex magnetic state, and the residual resistivity and the T^2 resistivity coefficient increases with pressure, suggesting the possibility of a magnetic quantum critical point at a higher pressure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 firure

    Wave Packets in Discrete Quantum Phase Space

    The properties of quantum mechanics with a discrete phase space are studied. The minimum uncertainty states are found, and these states become the Gaussian wave packets in the continuum limit. With a suitably chosen Hamiltonian that gives free particle motion in the continuum limit, it is found that full or approximate periodic time evolution can result. This represents an example of revivals of wave packets that in the continuum limit is the familiar free particle motion on a line. Finally we examine the uncertainty principle for discrete phase space and obtain the correction terms to the continuum case.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

    Identifying cross country skiing techniques using power meters in ski poles

    Power meters are becoming a widely used tool for measuring training and racing effort in cycling, and are now spreading also to other sports. This means that increasing volumes of data can be collected from athletes, with the aim of helping coaches and athletes analyse and understanding training load, racing efforts, technique etc. In this project, we have collaborated with Skisens AB, a company producing handles for cross country ski poles equipped with power meters. We have conducted a pilot study in the use of machine learning techniques on data from Skisens poles to identify which "gear" a skier is using (double poling or gears 2-4 in skating), based only on the sensor data from the ski poles. The dataset for this pilot study contained labelled time-series data from three individual skiers using four different gears recorded in varied locations and varied terrain. We systematically evaluated a number of machine learning techniques based on neural networks with best results obtained by a LSTM network (accuracy of 95% correctly classified strokes), when a subset of data from all three skiers was used for training. As expected, accuracy dropped to 78% when the model was trained on data from only two skiers and tested on the third. To achieve better generalisation to individuals not appearing in the training set more data is required, which is ongoing work.Comment: Presented at the Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Symposium 201

    Charge states and magnetic ordering in LaMnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices

    We investigated the magnetic and optical properties of [(LaMnO3)n/(SrTiO3)8]20 (n = 1, 2, and 8) superlattices grown by pulsed laser deposition. We found a weak ferromagnetic and semiconducting state developed in all superlattices. An analysis of the optical conductivity showed that the LaMnO3 layers in the superlattices were slightly doped. The amount of doping was almost identical regardless of the LaMnO3 layer thickness up to eight unit cells, suggesting that the effect is not limited to the interface. On the other hand, the magnetic ordering became less stable as the LaMnO3 layer thickness decreased, probably due to a dimensional effect.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     A New Simultaneous Identification of the Harmonic Excitations and Nonlinear Damping of Forced Damped Nonlinear Oscillations: A Parametric Approach

    This paper presents a novel, general method that is aimed at identifying both the harmonic excitations and nonlinear damping of forced nonlinear oscillation systems. An inverse formalism is developed for the identification method, which is shown to be well posed. That is, the inverse formalism has a unique solution and it depends continuously on the data. The unique solution is derived in the closed form. In addition to the mathematical analysis, a numerical example involving a highly nonlinear system is examined for demonstrating the workability of the proposed method for simultaneously identifying both the two aforementioned excitations and nonlinear damping
