Promoting Thermal Conductivity of Alumina-Based Composite Materials by Systematically Incorporating Modified Graphene Oxide

    Get PDF
Small amounts of thermally conductive graphene oxide (GO) and modified GO are systematically introduced as a second filler to thermal interface materials (TIMs) consisting of alumina (Al2O3) particles and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The surface of GO is covalently linked with an organic moiety, octadecylamine (ODA), to significantly improve the miscibility and dispersity of GO across the TIM matrix. Subsequently, two series of PDMS-Al2O3 composite TIMs are manufactured as a function of GO and ODA-GO content (0.25 wt%–2.5 wt%) to understand the effect of these second additives. The incorporation of GO into the Al2O3-PDMS composite materials generally increases the thermal conductivity (TC), ranging from 18% to 29%. Conversely, the use of ODA-GO further enhances the overall performance of TIMs (22–54%) by facilitating the dispersion degree of GO across the composite matrix. The great improvement in TC is presumably related to the formation of conductive pathways by uniformly integrating 2D-type GO flakes across spherical Al2O3 particle networks. The ability to simply regulate the polarity of the thermally conductive second filler can provide an idea for designing cost-effective and practical TIM-2-type pads that can be commercially applicable in between an integrated heat spreader and a heat sink

Surgical Extent for Oral Cancer: Emphasis on a Cut-Off Value for the Resection Margin Status: A Narrative Literature Review

    No full text
The optimal cut-off point of the resection margin was recently debated in oral cancer. To evaluate the current evidence of the dynamic criteria of the resection margin, a review of the available literature was performed. Studies were sourced from PubMed and EMBASE by searching for the keywords “mouth neoplasm”, “oral cancer”, “oral cavity cancer”, “oral squamous cell carcinoma”, “tongue cancer”, “margins of excision”, “surgical margin” and “resection margin”. We found approximately 998 articles on PubMed and 2227 articles on EMBASE. A total of 3225 articles was identified, and 2763 of those were left after removing the duplicates. By applying advanced filters about the relevance of the subjects, these were narrowed down to 111 articles. After the final exclusion, 42 full-text articles were reviewed. The universal cut-off criteria of 5 mm used for determining the resection margin status has been debated due to recent studies evaluating the impact of different margin criteria on patient prognosis. Of note, the degree of the microscopic extension from the gross tumor border correlates with tumor dimensions. Therefore, a relatively narrow safety margin can be justified in early-stage oral cancer without the additional risk of recurrence, while a wide safety margin might be required for advanced-stage oral cancer. This review suggests a surgical strategy to adjust the criteria for risk grouping and adjuvant treatments, according to individual tumor dimensions or characteristics. In the future, it might be possible to establish individual tumor-specific surgical margins and risk stratification during or after surgery. However, the results should be interpreted with caution because there is no strong evidence (e.g., prospective randomized controlled studies) yet to support the conclusions. Our study is meaningful in suggesting future research directions and discussions

Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Allium Hookeri Root and Processed Sulfur on the Growth Performance of Guinea Pigs

This study investigated the effects of the dietary supplementation of the Allium hookeri root, and processed sulfur, on the growth performance of guinea pigs. The guinea pigs were fed a control diet (CON), as well as the control diet including 1% freeze-dried Allium hookeri root (AH), or 0.1% processed sulfur (S), or including both the freeze-dried Allium hookeri root and the processed sulfur (AHS). The weight of perirenal adipose tissue (PAT) and the epididymal adipose tissue (EAT) in the AH were significantly lower than CON (p < 0.05). The serum cholesterols levels of the AH and the AHS were significantly lower than the S (p < 0.05). While the total saturated fatty acid content in the serum of the AH and AHS groups showed a tendency to decrease, the total monounsaturated fatty acid increased. The results of this study suggested that dietary consumption of Allium hookeri root may help to decrease fat accumulation, lower serum cholesterol levels, and control serum free fatty acid contents in the guinea pigs

In utero injection of a retroviral vector into the embryonic telencephalon aided by ultrasound backscatter microscopy permits introduction of a gene of interest at an early stage of development. In this study, we compared the tissue distribution of gene expression in adult mice injected with retroviral vectors at different embryonic ages in utero. Following ultrasound image-guided gene delivery (UIGD) into the embryonic telencephalon, adult mice were subjected to whole-body luciferase imaging and immunohistochemical analysis at 6 weeks and 1 year postinjection. Luciferase activity was observed in a wide range of tissues in animals injected at embryonic age 9.5 (E9.5), whereas animals injected at E10.5 showed brain-localized reporter gene expression. These results suggest that mouse embryonic brain creates a closed and impermeable structure around E10. Therefore, by injecting a transgene before or after E10, transgene expression can be manipulated to be local or systemic. Our results also provide information that widens the applicability of UIGD beyond neuroscience studies

Abstract Background High-grade salivary gland cancer is a distinct clinical entity that has aggressive disease progression and early systemic spread. However, because of the rarity of the disease, the clinical outcomes, prognostic factors and clinical decision on the optimal treatments have not been fully understood. Methods In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 124 patients with high-grade salivary gland cancers and performed multivariate survival analyses to evaluate the clinico-pathological factors affecting the treatment outcomes. Results The 5-year disease-specific survival was 63.4% in patients with high-grade salivary gland cancers. Among the clinico-pathological factors, presence of lymph node metastasis (hazard ratio 5.63, 95% confidence interval 2.64–12.03, P < 0.001) and distant metastasis (hazard ratio 4.59, 95% confidence interval 2.10–10.04, P < 0.001) at diagnosis were the most potent unfavorable prognostic factors. Importantly, patients with early-stage disease (T1–2N0M0) showed apparently a relatively excellent prognosis (93.2% 5-year disease-specific survival); meanwhile N (+) and M1 status at diagnosis resulted in dismal outcomes (44.6 and 21.1% 5-year disease-specific survival, respectively). On comparing surgery alone as a treatment modality, surgery plus postoperative radiation significantly benefited the patients, but the difference between adjuvant radiation and chemoradiation was not found to be significant. Pathological subtypes of high-grade salivary gland cancers were not significantly associated with prognosis. Conclusions Despite of an overall unfavorable prognosis in high-grade salivary gland cancer, patients with early-stage disease are expected to have excellent prognosis (over 90% survival rates) with surgery plus adjuvant radiation, which may implicate the patients’ consultation, therapeutic decision making, and the need for early detection of the disease

Microbiome Markers of Pancreatic Cancer Based on Bacteria-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Acquired from Blood Samples: A Retrospective Propensity Score Matching Analysis

    No full text
Novel biomarkers for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer (PC) are necessary to improve prognosis. We aimed to discover candidate biomarkers by identifying compositional differences of microbiome between patients with PC (n = 38) and healthy controls (n = 52), using microbial extracellular vesicles (EVs) acquired from blood samples. Composition analysis was performed using 16S rRNA gene analysis and bacteria-derived EVs. Statistically significant differences in microbial compositions were used to construct PC prediction models after propensity score matching analysis to reduce other possible biases. Between-group differences in microbial compositions were identified at the phylum and genus levels. At the phylum level, three species (Verrucomicrobia, Deferribacteres, and Bacteroidetes) were more abundant and one species (Actinobacteria) was less abundant in PC patients. At the genus level, four species (Stenotrophomonas, Sphingomonas, Propionibacterium, and Corynebacterium) were less abundant and six species (Ruminococcaceae UCG-014, Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group, Akkermansia, Turicibacter, Ruminiclostridium, and Lachnospiraceae UCG-001) were more abundant in PC patients. Using the best combination of these microbiome markers, we constructed a PC prediction model that yielded a high area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.966 and 1.000, at the phylum and genus level, respectively). These microbiome markers, which altered microbial compositions, are therefore candidate biomarkers for early diagnosis of PC
