Consumer Acceptance of Genetically Modified Foods in South Korea: Factor and Cluster Analysis
This study extends biotechnology discourse to cover South Korea in the Asian sub-continent showing a marked difference in perceptions between traditional and GM foods. Factor analysis suggests South Koreans may treat foods that are locally produced and those with no artificial flavors or colorings preferentially to GM foods. Additionally, South Koreans have concerns about perceived risks related to biotechnology, and, given a choice, they may pay more to avoid GM foods. CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS IN KOREA: FACTOR AND CLUSTER ANALYSIS
The study applies multivariate statistical and econometric tools to estimate the importance of the various factors driving Korean consumer acceptance of GM food products. The evidence thus far on biotechnology is decidedly mixed: public perceptions of food biotechnology are characterized by ongoing tension between opposing forces. The South Korean perceptions about food in general and ranges from excitement about the promise of environmental and economic benefits from GM products to fear and distrust of the technology for unknown risks. This highlights the importance of credibility of private and public institutions responsible for certifying the safety of GM foods and implementing necessary regulatory controls on GM processes and products. In between, many people are undecided, trying to learn more about the issues and reach a definitive position. Encouraging though is that some people are eager to try new foods. Koreans strongly favors food naturalness, familiarity, and access just as the west countries. Results suggest that the South Korean Consumer priorities with respect to various biotechnology and general food issues are related to their socioeconomic and value attributes. This implies that, at least in the near term, there will be considerable divergence within the society in terms of acceptance of food biotechnology. The finding that large segments of the Korean society are either not fully informed or interested in learning more about biotechnology calls for a public education program. A program that may play a constructive role in not only informing consumers but help them in arriving at a socially optimal collective decisions on the wisdom and desirability of food biotechnology.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
PUBLIC APPROVAL OF PLANT AND ANIMAL BIOTECHNOLOGY IN KOREA: AN ORDERED PROBIT ANALYSIS
This study analyzes predictors of Korean public acceptance of the use of biotechnology to create genetically modified food products. Results indicate that the consumers with above average knowledge of specific outcomes of genetic modification were more likely than those with inaccurate or no knowledge to approve use of plant or animal genetic modification for the creation of new food products. Young South Koreans consumers (ages 20 to 29 years old) were more likely than old consumers (ages 50 to 59) to approve use of biotechnology to create both plant and animal based foods. Further, those Koreans in favor of GM labeling were less likely to approve the use of biotechnology for the creation of food products. The results also suggest that public trust and confidence on various institutions associated with biotechnology is critical for the future of the technology. There was some evidence of differential biotechnology approval among consumers of different residential areas, income levels and political affiliation. Thus, those in cities, those with incomes above 40 million Won, and of liberal political affiliation were found to be more approving of animal biotechnology.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
Short Term Effect and Safety of Antidiuretic Hormone in the Patients with Nocturia
Purpose To investigate the short-term safety of antidiuretic hormone in elderly patients with nocturnal polyuria, focus on hyponatremia and others electrolytes disturbances and to assess short-term effects on nocturnal urine output and number of nocturnal voids. Methods Between June 2005 and August 2006, a total of 34 patients with nocturnal polyuria were orally administered 0.2 mg desmopressin tablet at bedtime for two weeks. Serum sodium, others electrolytes, urine sodium and urine osmolarity were assessed in the third days, one week and two weeks after treatment with desmopressin and compared adult group (<65 years of age) with elderly group (≥65 years of age). We assessed the effect of desmopressin using a frequency-volume charts and analysed. Results In total 34 patients (20 adult, 14 elderly) were analyzed. Desmopressin treatment did not significantly change serum and urine electrolytes include soduim concentration in elderly patients comparied with adult patients. Serum sodium concentration below normal range was recorded in 2 patients in elderly group, but no serious adverse events occurred and recovered without sequelae. The mean number of nocturnal voids decresed (54% reduction) and nocturnal urine output decreased (57% reduction) after using desmopressin. Conclusions Desmopressin was well tolerated and effective in elderly patients with nocturnal polyuria without clinically significant hyponatremia
Characteristics of the aberrant pyramidal tract in comparison with the pyramidal tract in the human brain
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aberrant pyramidal tract (APT) refers to the collateral pathway of the pyramidal tract (PT) through the medial lemniscus in the midbrain and pons. Using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), we investigated the characteristics of the APT in comparison with the PT in the normal human brain.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In thirty-four (18.3%, right hemisphere: 20, left hemisphere: 14) of the 186 hemispheres, the APTs separated from the PT at the upper midbrain level, descended through the medial lemniscus from the midbrain to the pons, and then rejoined with the PT at the upper medulla. Nine (26.5%) of the 34 APTs were found to originate from the primary somatosensory cortex without a primary motor cortex origin. Values of fractional anisotropy (FA) and tract volume of the APT were lower than those of the PT (<it>P </it>< 0.05); however, no difference in mean diffusivity (MD) value was observed (<it>P ></it>0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We found that the APT has different characteristics, including less directionality, fewer neural fibers, and less origin from the primary motor cortex than the PT.</p

Session D5: Current Status of Fish Passages in South Korea
Abstract:
Weirs are important for countries that agriculture is the primary industry due to the stable supply of water to agricultural fields. Because agriculture is still important in Korean peninsula, weirs have been constructing until now from small streams to large rivers. However, only limited fish passages were installed in weirs, and there were no managements. As a results, streams and rivers have become highly fragmented, with fish migration being severely impeded. Thus, ministry of agriculture, food and rural affairs investigated entire fish passages in Korea in 2010-2011, and estimated current status and problems. A total of 33,718 weirs were installed (until year 2012), and this means that weirs are arithmetically located every 0.81km of the total stream length in Korea. Fish passages, however, were constructed only in 4,496 weirs (13.3% of installation rate). The weir type fish passages with Ice- Harbor type fishways (8.1%) which are favoured nowadays was showed the greatest number (36%), and the vertical slot type passages was in the second place (31%). The denil type and nature-like type were rarely installed. Only 18.1% of installed fish passages were left whole, and urgent repair is needed for 56.7%. Fish passages of 31.3% were incorporated into the recommended slope range of Korea (1:20). Most of problems are related discharge, poor entrance, breakage and sedimentation. With these structural problems, discontinuous installation of fish passages generates poor continuity of streams. Currently, to improve stream connectivity many projects from Korean government are now conducting and preparing, and additionally development of fish passages specialized for Korean fishes are required

Session C7: Tricky Little Lampreys! Efficacy of an Unmodified and Modified Super-Active Baffle Fish Pass for European River Lamprey (Lampetra Fluviatilis)
Abstract:
Achieving good upstream passage of lampreys, a threatened group of serpentine fishes, remains a problem. The ability of European river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) to pass a Crump weir using a 15% gradient Larinier superactive baffle fish pass during their upstream spawning migration was tested. This type of fish pass has become widespread in Europe in the last two decades, but its efficiency for river lamprey is unknown. River lamprey were PIT tagged (n=350) PIT, a subsample were acoustic tagged (n=31), and all were released downstream in batches in Oct-Dec 2013. Telemetry arrays were installed in the pass (PIT) and river (acoustic) and ran throughout the migration period. Attraction efficiency into the fishway (estimated at 90.1%) was good and half of lampreys entered within 24 h of release, but only one lamprey successfully ascended the pass (0.3% passage efficiency), despite many entering repeatedly. Out of 29 acoustic tagged lamprey that visited the weir, four (13.8%) passed the weir directly. The fishway was unsuitable for river lamprey over a wide range of flows. The pass was modified by addition of vertically mounted peg-and-slot tiles, interrogated at the entrance and exit by PIT telemetry and retested in winter 2014- 15. There was an increase in passage success. Preliminarily, out of 197 river lamprey PIT tagged Oct-Dec 2014, 184 (93.4%) were logged at the fishway entrance. 74 (40.2%) entered the tiles at the downstream end, of which 14 (18.9%) swam up through the tiles successfully. Twelve lamprey (6.5% passage efficiency) were logged at the upstream exit of the pass. Reduced flow velocity in combination with increased availability of resting habitat within the tiles may increase the passage efficiency of this type of fish pass for river lamprey. Roles of Primary Cilia in the Developing Brain
Essential to development, primary cilia are microtubule-based cellular organelles that protrude from the surface of cells. Acting as cellular antenna, primary cilia play central roles in transducing or regulating several signaling pathways, including Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Wnt signaling. Defects in primary cilia contribute to a group of syndromic disorders known as “ciliopathies” and can adversely affect development of the brain and other essential organs, including the kidneys, eyes, and liver. The molecular mechanisms of how defective primary cilia contribute to neurological defects, however, remain poorly understood. In this mini review, we summarize recent advances in understanding of the interactions between primary cilia and signaling pathways essential to cellular homeostasis and brain development
A COAXIALLY COUPLED DEFLECTING-ACCELERATING MODE CAVITY SYSTEM FOR PHASE-SPACE EXCHANGE (PSEX)
Abstract The phase space manipulation of bunched beams offers a wide range of flexibility in beam dynamics control for advanced accelerator application. In particular, the capability of exchanging the transverse and longitudinal phase spaces enables to switch the transverse and horizontal emittance or shaping the charge distribution of an electron bunch to improve acceleration gradient and transformer ratio in beam-driven accelerators. A deflecting mode cavity has been used as the most integral element in the beam control scheme as imposing a kick on particles transferred between the two phase planes. In practice, the presence of the RF element with a finite length, however, induces thick lens effect limiting the phase-space exchange (PSEX) performance based off a thin lens model. Extending the idea from [A. Zholents PAC 11], we proposed momentum compensation technique using a single accelerating mode cavity coaxially coupled with the deflecting mode one. This paper describes the composite 3.9 GHz system and presents design analysis, including tracking and particlein-cell (PIC) simulations, and layout of feasible experiment at the Advanced Superconducting Test Area (ASTA) of Fermilab
Far-Ultraviolet Cooling Features of the Antlia Supernova Remnant
We present far-ultraviolet observations of the Antlia supernova remnant
obtained with Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS, also called SPEAR).
The strongest lines observed are C IV 1548,1551 and C III 977. The C IV
emission of this mixed-morphology supernova remnant shows a clumpy
distribution, and the line intensity is nearly constant with radius. The C III
977 line, though too weak to be mapped over the whole remnant, is shown to vary
radially. The line intensity peaks at about half the radius, and drops at the
edge of the remnant. Both the clumpy distribution of C IV and the rise in the C
IV to C III ratio towards the edge suggest that central emission is from
evaporating cloudlets rather than thermal conduction in a more uniform, dense
