Structure on the set of closure operations of a commutative ring
We investigate the algebraic structure on the set of closure operations of a
ring. We show the set of closure operations is not a monoid under composition
for a discrete valuation ring. Even the set of semiprime operations over a DVR
is not a monoid; however, it is the union of two monoids, one being the left
but not right act of the other. We also determine all semiprime operations over
the ring
Hydrocolus heggiensis : a new species from Georgia and South Carolina (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae)
Hydrocolus heggiensis, a new species of predacious water beetle, is described from granite monadnocks in Georgia and one location in South Carolina. It most closely resembles H. stagnalis (Gemminger and Harold) but differs in range, genitalia, and elytral punctation. Photographs, drawings, and an interpolation of the new species into existing keys are given
Death Beyond a Reasonable Doubt
In the forty-four years since the Court employed the Eighth Amendment to temporarily suspend the death penalty in the United States in Furman v. Georgia in 1972, the Court has spilled an enormous amount of ink attempting to instruct the states on how to properly guide jurors’ discretion in imposing the death penalty. Yet, in its voluminous Eighth Amendment jurisprudence, the Justices spilled not one drop suggesting the familiar and unifying standard of beyond a reasonable doubt as a guide
Lewis Coastal Chapel-Sites Survey: Topographic Survey 2005
This report describes the results of topographic surveys undertaken for the second year of
the Lewis Coastal Chapel-sites Survey (LCCS) on four chapel-sites on the Isle of Lewis in
2005. Desktop study undertaken in the first year (2004) of the LCCS identified thirty-seven
recorded and five potential chapel-sites in Lewis and its outlying islands, and this was
followed up with walkover survey of sixteen sites and plane table survey of three sites.
However, further, more detailed topographic survey was recommended for eight sites, and
this prompted the work in 2005. In February detailed topographic survey of three sites was
undertaken: Teampall Pheadair, Suainebost (Site no 4), Teampall Mhealastadh, Uig (Site no
20) and Tigh na Cailleachan Dubha, Uig (Site no 21). In May - June 2005 topographic
survey of the chapel-site of St Mary’s on Eilean an Tighe, Shiant Islands (formerly known as
Eilean na Cille) on the Shiant Islands (Site no 32) was also undertaken with joint funding
from the Shiants Island Project (SHIP)
