NEOWISE: Observations of the Irregular Satellites of Jupiter and Saturn
We present thermal model fits for 11 Jovian and 3 Saturnian irregular
satellites based on measurements from the WISE/NEOWISE dataset. Our fits
confirm spacecraft-measured diameters for the objects with in situ observations
(Himalia and Phoebe) and provide diameters and albedo for 12 previously
unmeasured objects, 10 Jovian and 2 Saturnian irregular satellites. The
best-fit thermal model beaming parameters are comparable to what is observed
for other small bodies in the outer Solar System, while the visible, W1, and W2
albedos trace the taxonomic classifications previously established in the
literature. Reflectance properties for the irregular satellites measured are
similar to the Jovian Trojan and Hilda Populations, implying common origins.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical

Influence of microphone housing on the directional response of piezoelectric mems microphones inspired by Ormia ochracea
The influence of custom microphone housings on the acoustic directionality and frequency response of a multiband bio-inspired MEMS microphone is presented. The 3.2 mm by 1.7 mm piezoelectric MEMS microphone, fabricated by a cost-effective multi-user process, has four frequency bands of operation below 10 kHz, with a desired first-order directionality for all four bands. 7×7×2.5 mm3 3-D-printed bespoke housings with varying acoustic access to the backside of the microphone membrane are investigated through simulation and experiment with respect to their influence on the directionality and frequency response to sound stimulus. Results show a clear link between directionality and acoustic access to the back cavity of the microphone. Furthermore, there was a change in direction of the first-order directionality with reduced height in this back cavity acoustic access. The required configuration for creating an identical directionality for all four frequency bands is investigated along with the influence of reducing the symmetry of the acoustic back cavity access. This paper highlights the overall requirement of considering housing geometries and their influence on acoustic behavior for bio-inspired directional microphones
QUANTITATION AND IMMUNOCYTOCHEMICAL LOCALIZATION OF HUMAN SKIN COLLAGENASE IN BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Human skin collagenase was quantitated by radioimmunoassay in 21 basal cell carcinomas. Immunoreactive collagenase protein was found to be approximately 2-fold greater in extracts of these tumors than in extracts of normal skin, suggesting that this enzyme may be important in the pathogenesis of soft tissue destruction in vivo. To further define the role of collagenase in such destruction, immunofluorescent staining with specific antiserum to human skin collagenase was used to localize collagenase in the basal cell carcinomas. The enzyme was found only in the stromal elements surrounding the tumor islands. No staining of the epithelial components of the basal cell carcinomas was found. These findings suggest that the normal connective tissue elements may have been stimulated to produce an increased amount of collagenase and emphasize the importance of epithelial-stromal interaction in soft tissue invasiveness
Burn injury, gender and cancer risk: population-based cohort study using data from Scotland and Western Australia
Objective: To investigate the risk of cancer and potential gender effects in persons hospitalised with burn injury. Design: Population-based retrospective cohort study using record-linkage systems in Scotland and Western Australia. Participants: Records of 37 890 and 23 450 persons admitted with a burn injury in Scotland and Western Australia, respectively, from 1983 to 2008. Deidentified extraction of all linked hospital morbidity records, mortality and cancer records were provided by the Information Service Division Scotland and the Western Australian Data Linkage Service. Main outcome measures: Total and gender-specific number of observed and expected cases of total (‘all sites’) and site-specific cancers and standardised incidence ratios (SIRs).Results: From 1983 to 2008, for female burn survivors, there was a greater number of observed versus expected notifications of total cancer with 1011 (SIR, 95% CI 1.3, 1.2to 1.4) and 244 (SIR, 95% CI 1.12, 1.05 to 1.30), respectively, for Scotland and Western Australia. No statistically significant difference in total cancer risk was found for males. Significant excesses in observed cancers among burn survivors (combined gender) in Scotland and Western Australian were found for buccal cavity, liver, larynx and respiratory tract and for cancers of the female genital tract. Conclusions: Results from the Scotland data confirmed the increased risk of total (‘all sites’) cancer previously observed among female burn survivors in Western Australia. The gender dimorphism observed in this study may be related to the role of gender in the immune response to burn injury. More research is required to understand the underlying mechanism(s) that may link burn injury with an increased risk of some cancers

Seasonal variability of particulate organic radiocarbon in the northeast Pacific ocean
We present Delta(14)C measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) collected on four cruises at our time series site (station M) in the northeast Pacific Ocean. We observe a large gradient with depth in the suspended POC Delta(14)C values (124-160 parts per thousand). These profiles display lower Delta(14)C values (by 20-30 parts per thousand) in samples between 2500 m and the bottom during June 1992 and July 1993 than those during February and October 1992. Values of Delta(14)C in sinking POC from deep-moored sediment trap collections suggest a semiannual trend that displays lower overall Delta(14)C in material collected during periods of high flux. A limited number of Delta(14)C measurements of small swimmers picked from the trap 650 m above bottom are similar to surface Delta(14)C measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIG) and suspended POC, indicating a surface carbon source. Overall, we postulate that the major process causing lower Delta(14)C values of deep suspended and sinking POC is sorption (or biological incorporation) of \u27\u27old\u27\u27 DOC onto particulate matter. There appears to be a higher ratio of DOC sorbed to sinking particulate matter at times of high flux (late spring and early fall) that can be thought of as a \u27\u27stripping out\u27\u27 of DOC from the water column. The DIC Delta(14)C display a small seasonal variation in the surface waters and is not the sole source of the observed seasonality in the POC Delta(14)C signals
