Stratospheric dynamics
A global circulation model is being used to study the dynamical behavior of stratospheric planetary waves (waves having horizontal wavelengths of tens of thousands of kilometers) forced by growing cyclonic disturbances of intermediate scale, typically with wavelengths of a few thousand kilometers, which occur in the troposphere. Planetary scale waves are the dominant waves in the stratosphere, and are important for understanding the distribution of atmospheric trace constituents. Planetary wave forcing by intermediate scale tropospheric cyclonic disturbances is important for producing eastward travelling planetary waves of the sort which are prominent in the Southern Hemisphere during winter. The same global circulation model is also being used to simulate and understand the rate of dispersion and possible stratospheric climatic feedbacks of the El Chichon volcanic aerosol cloud. By comparing the results of the model calculation with an established data set now in existence for the volcanic cloud spatial and temporal distribution, stratospheric transport processes will be better understood, and the extent to which the cloud modified stratospheric wind and temperature fields can be assessed

Economics of Using On-farm Reservoirs to Distribute Diverted Surface Water to Depleted Ground Water Areas of the Southern Mississippi Valley Region
Rapid ground water depletion has become a significant problem for parts of the Southern Mississippi River Valley. In 1997, the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission (ASWCC) declared six counties in the Grand Prairie of Arkansas critical ground water areas. A proposed solution to the ground water depletion problem in this region is to divert surplus flows from the White River by a canal system to the farmer stakeholders. To make the system work, on-farm reservoirs will be needed to store and manage the diverted surface water for crop irrigation use during the growing season
Efficient operators for studying higher partial waves
An extended multi-hadron operator is developed to extract the spectra of
irreducible representations in the finite volume. The irreducible
representations of the cubic group are projected using a coordinate-space
operator. The correlation function of this operator is computationally
efficient to extract lattice spectra. In particular, this new formulation only
requires propagator inversions from two distinct locations, at fixed physical
separation. We perform a proof-of-principle study on a lattice
volume with ~MeV by isolating the spectra of ,

Some Chemical, Physical and Mineralogical Features of Soil Colloids
The -1 micron portion of several diversified soils were separated by sedimentary fractionation. Physical properties were evaluated on the -1 micron portion, the +1 micron portion, and on the original -40 sample. The -1 micron portion was analyzed for clay mineral identity by X-ray diffraction, and analyzed chemically for associated materials such as the oxides of Iron, Aluminum, Calcium, and lv!agneeium.
These data present several possibilities and trends as to the inter-dependency of the involved variables, other considerations have been devoted to the geologic origin of several samples and to various physico-chemical relationships
Distributional Impact of U.S. Farm Commodity Programs: Accounting for Alternative Farm Household Typologies
Agricultural households adjust to policy changes through market mechanisms by altering: their production mix, labor input, and on- and off-farm investments. Because of the significant heterogeneity among farms in the US agricultural sector, various types of farm households respond to the same policy change in significantly different ways. The parameters used to classify farm households into different typologies may also play a significant role in the interpretation of observed effects of policy changes. This paper, using a highly disaggregated U.S. Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, analyzes the distributional impacts of policy changes involving price-contingent government payments on alternative U.S. farm household typologies.
