The effects of age and aspirin on porcine platelet function
Aspirin inhibits platelet function in many species. This study examined the effects of aspirin on platelet function in the pig, an economically important food animal and an animal model of human disease;Platelet function in man is partially age dependent with neonatal platelets routinely having a decreased platelet aggregation response. This does not appear to be true for the pig. Twenty neonatal piglets and 20 weanling piglets had the same or increased in vitro platelet response to platelet agonists as did 20 adult gilts and sows. An unusual finding was an occasional spontaneously reversible neonatal porcine platelet response to high-dose arachidonic acid;Commercially available oral aspirin, at various dosages, was administered to 20 weanling piglets. Collagen-induced platelet aggregation was maximally inhibited at an aspirin dose of 20 mg/kg. Aspirin inhibition could be overcome, however, by increasing the concentration of the collagen aggregating agent;Oral aspirin also decreased the cardiovascular response to intravascular infusions of collagen in 4 anesthetized piglets but did not completely prevent the increase in either pulmonary vascular resistance or in mean pulmonary arterial pressure. Oral aspirin pretreatment did, however, prevent the neutropenia that was observed in the 4 untreated control piglets which had received identical collagen infusions;It is concluded that the newborn pig has relatively mature platelet function and that aspirin can inhibit porcine platelet aggregation and platelet interactions with other mediators of inflammation. Aspirin therapy, therefore, may be clinically useful in some platelet-mediated diseases in the pig
The Impact of Accretion Disk Winds on the Optical Spectra of Cataclysmic Variables
Many high-state non-magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) exhibit blue-shifted
absorption or P-Cygni profiles associated with ultraviolet (UV) resonance
lines. These features imply the existence of powerful accretion disk winds in
CVs. Here, we use our Monte Carlo ionization and radiative transfer code to
investigate whether disk wind models that produce realistic UV line profiles
are also likely to generate observationally significant recombination line and
continuum emission in the optical waveband. We also test whether outflows may
be responsible for the single-peaked emission line profiles often seen in
high-state CVs and for the weakness of the Balmer absorption edge (relative to
simple models of optically thick accretion disks). We find that a standard disk
wind model that is successful in reproducing the UV spectra of CVs also leaves
a noticeable imprint on the optical spectrum, particularly for systems viewed
at high inclination. The strongest optical wind-formed recombination lines are
H and He II . We demonstrate that a higher-density outflow
model produces all the expected H and He lines and produces a recombination
continuum that can fill in the Balmer jump at high inclinations. This model
displays reasonable verisimilitude with the optical spectrum of RW Trianguli.
No single-peaked emission is seen, although we observe a narrowing of the
double-peaked emission lines from the base of the wind. Finally, we show that
even denser models can produce a single-peaked H line. On the basis of
our results, we suggest that winds can modify, and perhaps even dominate, the

Line-driven Disk Winds in Active Galactic Nuclei: The Critical Importance of Ionization and Radiative Transfer
Accretion disk winds are thought to produce many of the characteristic
features seen in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasi-stellar
objects (QSOs). These outflows also represent a natural form of feedback
between the central supermassive black hole and its host galaxy. The mechanism
for driving this mass loss remains unknown, although radiation pressure
mediated by spectral lines is a leading candidate. Here, we calculate the
ionization state of, and emergent spectra for, the hydrodynamic simulation of a
line-driven disk wind previously presented by Proga & Kallman (2004). To
achieve this, we carry out a comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation of the
radiative transfer through, and energy exchange within, the predicted outflow.
We find that the wind is much more ionized than originally estimated. This is
in part because it is much more difficult to shield any wind regions
effectively when the outflow itself is allowed to reprocess and redirect
ionizing photons. As a result, the calculated spectrum that would be observed
from this particular outflow solution would not contain the ultraviolet
spectral lines that are observed in many AGN/QSOs. Furthermore, the wind is so
highly ionized that line-driving would not actually be efficient. This does not
necessarily mean that line-driven winds are not viable. However, our work does
illustrate that in order to arrive at a self-consistent model of line-driven
disk winds in AGN/QSO, it will be critical to include a more detailed treatment
of radiative transfer and ionization in the next generation of hydrodynamic

Summer-Long Grazing of High vs. Low Endophyte (\u3cem\u3eNeotyphodium coenophialum\u3c/em\u3e)-Infected Tall Fescue by Growing Beef Steers Results in Distinct Temporal Blood Analyte Response Patterns, with Poor Correlation to Serum Prolactin Levels
Previously, we reported the effects of fescue toxicosis on developing Angus-cross steer growth, carcass, hepatic mRNA, and protein expression profiles of selected serum proteins, and blood clinical and chemical profiles, after summer-long grazing (85 days) of high endophyte (HE)- vs. low endophyte (LE)-infected fescue pastures. We now report the temporal development of acute, intermediate, and chronic responses of biochemical and clinical blood analytes determined at specified time intervals (period 1, day 0–36; period 2, day 37–58; and period 3, day 59–85). Throughout the trial, the alkaloid concentrations of the HE forage was consistently 19–25 times greater (P ≤ 0.002) than the concentration in the LE forage, and HE vs. LE steers had continuously lower (P ≤ 0.049) serum prolactin (85%), cholesterol (27%), and albumin (5%), but greater red blood cells (7%). The HE steers had decreased (P = 0.003) ADG only during period 1 (−0.05 vs. 0.4 kg/day). For period 1, HE steers had reduced (P ≤ 0.090) numbers of eosinophils (55%) and lymphocytes (18%), serum triglyceride (27%), and an albumin/globulin ratio (9%), but an increased bilirubin concentration (20%). During period 2, serum LDH activities were 18% lower (P = 0.022) for HE vs. LE steers. During period 3, serum levels of ALP (32%), ALT (16%), AST (15%), creatine kinase (35%), glucose (10%), and LDH (23%) were lower (P ≤ 0.040) for HE steers. Correlation analysis of serum prolactin and other blood analytes revealed that triglycerides (P = 0.042) and creatinine (P = 0.021) were moderately correlated (r ≤ 0.433) with HE serum prolactin. In conclusion, three HE-induced blood analyte response patterns were identified: continually altered, initially altered, and subsequently “recovered,” or altered only after long-term exposure. Blood analytes affected by length of grazing HE vs. LE forages were either not or poorly correlated with serum prolactin. These data reveal important, temporal, data about how young cattle respond to the challenge of consuming HE pasture
The clinical diagnosis of Achilles tendinopathy: a scoping review
Background Achilles tendinopathy describes the clinical presentation of pain localised to the Achilles tendon and associated loss of function with tendon loading activities. However, clinicians display differing approaches to the diagnosis of Achilles tendinopathy due to inconsistency in the clinical terminology, an evolving understanding of the pathophysiology, and the lack of consensus on clinical tests which could be considered the gold standard for diagnosing Achilles tendinopathy. The primary aim of this scoping review is to provide a method for clinically diagnosing Achilles tendinopathy that aligns with the nine core health domains. Methodology A scoping review was conducted to synthesise available evidence on the clinical diagnosis and clinical outcome measures of Achilles tendinopathy. Extracted data included author, year of publication, participant characteristics, methods for diagnosing Achilles tendinopathy and outcome measures. Results A total of 159 articles were included in this scoping review. The most commonly used subjective measure was self-reported location of pain, while additional measures included pain with tendon loading activity, duration of symptoms and tendon stiffness. The most commonly identified objective clinical test for Achilles tendinopathy was tendon palpation (including pain on palpation, localised tendon thickening or localised swelling). Further objective tests used to assess Achilles tendinopathy included tendon pain during loading activities (single-leg heel raises and hopping) and the Royal London Hospital Test and the Painful Arc Sign. The VISA-A questionnaire as the most commonly used outcome measure to monitor Achilles tendinopathy. However, psychological factors (PES, TKS and PCS) and overall quality of life (SF-12, SF-36 and EQ-5D-5L) were less frequently measured. Conclusions There is significant variation in the methodology and outcome measures used to diagnose Achilles tendinopathy. A method for diagnosing Achilles tendinopathy is proposed, that includes both results from the scoping review and recent recommendations for reporting results in tendinopathy
Mise-En-Scène of Narrative Actions in Interactive Storytelling (Demonstration).
In this Interactive Storytelling (IS) work, we provide a framework for automating several aspects of staging the activities of a population of narrative agents and their interactions. Narrative agents can have differing levels of narrative relevance within the situated narrative actions which are visualised within a 3D real-time virtual world. The solution we propose here offers a framework for integrating
the use of multiple dynamic regions within the 3D story world
defined through a semantic representation that is able to support the staging of narrative actions through the behaviours of the primary and background agents’ involved. This includes both the mechanics of dealing with the narrative discourse level as well as the interaction with the narrative generation layer to account for any dynamic modifications of the 3D story world.
