    The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : targeting and first spectra from SDSS-V

    The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19. We also describe three value-added catalogs (VACs) based on SDSS-IV data that have been published since DR17, and one VAC based on the SDSS-V data in the eFEDS field.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Regionally endothermic traits in planktivorous basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus

    Few fast-swimming apex fishes are classified as ‘regional endotherms’, having evolved a relatively uncommon suite of traits (e.g. elevated body temperatures, centralised red muscle, and thick-walled hearts) thought to facilitate a fast, predatory lifestyle. Unlike those apex predators, Endangered basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus are massive filter-feeding planktivores assumed to have the anatomy and physiology typical of fully ectothermic fishes. We combined dissections of stranded specimens with biologging of free-swimming individuals and found that basking sharks have red muscle located medially at the trunk, almost 50% compact myocardium of the ventricle, and subcutaneous white muscle temperatures consistently 1.0 to 1.5°C above ambient. Collectively, our findings suggest basking sharks are not full ectotherms, instead sharing several traits used to define a regional endotherm, thus deviating from our current understanding of the species and questioning the link between physiology and ecology of regionally endothermic shark species. With successful forecasting of population dynamics and distribution shifts often improved by accurate physiological data, our results may help explain movement patterns of the species, which could ultimately facilitate conservation effort

    Responses of "Chardonnay" to deficit irrigation applied at different phenological stages: vine growth, must composition, and wine quality

    Adoption of water-saving irrigation strategies is necessary especially for grapevine that has the highest acreage of any fruit crop in the world. We applied deficit irrigation to Chardonnay wine grape at the following phenological stages: anthesis to fruit set, fruit set to veraison, and veraison to harvest. Four irrigation levels (0, 25, 50, and 100 % of crop evapotranspiration, ETc) were applied in 2009. Vines grown in large containers were used to enable imposition of water stress early in the growing season. The following parameters were measured: midday leaf water potential, vine growth, yield, and quality of must and wine. The same parameters were measured in 2010 although all vines were fully irrigated. The 0 and 25 % treatments caused defoliation and had negative impacts on yield and wine quality in both 2009 and 2010. Chardonnay was most sensitive to water stress in post-veraison in terms of productivity and wine quality
