Novel Quark Fragmentation Functions and the Nucleon's Transversity Distribution
We define twist-two and twist-three quark fragmentation functions in Quantum
Chromodynamics (QCD) and study their physical implications. Using this
formalism we show how the nucleon's transversity distribution can be measured

The Off-forward Quark-Quark Correlation Function
The properties of the non-forward quark-quark correlation function are
examined. We derive constraints on the correlation function from the
transformation properties of the fundamental fields of QCD occurring in its
definition. We further develop a method to construct an ansatz for this
correlator. We present the complete leading order set of generalized parton
distributions in terms of the amplitudes of the ansatz. Finally we conclude
that the number of independent generalized parton helicity changing

Effect of manganese doping on the size effect of lead zirconate titanate thin films and the extrinsic nature of dead layers
We have investigated the size effect in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin
films with a range of manganese (Mn) doping concentrations. We found that the
size effect in the conventional Pt/PZT/Pt thin-film capacitors could be
systematically reduced and almost completely eliminated by increasing Mn doping
concentration. The interfacial layer at the electrode-film interface appears to
disappear almost entirely for the PZT films with 2% Mn doping levels, confirmed
by the fits using the conventional in-series capacitor model. Our work
indicates that the size effect in ferroelectrics is extrinsic in nature,
supporting the work by Saad et al. Other implications of our results have also
been discussed. By comparing a variety of experimental studies in the
literature we propose a scenario that the dead layer between PZT (or barium
strontium titanate, BST) and metal electrodes such as Pt and Au might have a
defective pyrochlore/fluorite structure (possibly with a small portion of
ferroelectric perovskite phase).Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Experience with posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders in solid organ transplant recipients
Nearly 6000 solid organ transplants have been performed at the University of Pittsburgh since 1981. Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) have occurred in 131 patients, at a frequency of 2.2%. The majority of cases manifest within 6 months following allograft, but individual lesions may arise several years thereafter. From 1981 to 1989, cyclosporine-A (CsA) served as the primary immunosuppressant in this population. In March of 1989, FK506 was introduced for clinical trials. Since that time, 1421 patients have received FK506 either for primary immunosuppression or as rescue therapy. The frequency of PTLD in this subpopulation is 1.5%. PTLD arising under FK506-containing regimens have clinicopathologic features similar to those arising with CsA immunosuppression. The frequency of PTLD at this point in time is approximately 1%, in kidney allograft patients, 2.7% in liver, 3.3% in heart and 3.8%, in heart/lung or lung recipients. An understanding of the range of histologic appearance is important for the diagnosis of PTLD, especially when it involves the allograft itself. Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene analysis shows that lesions with no rearrangements or with a rearrangement in only a small proportion of cells are more likely to respond to reduced immunosuppression than are those with clonal rearrangement involving a high proportion of cells. However, this distinction is not absolute, and a trial of reduced immunosuppression appears to be indicated regardless of clonal status

A selected, annotated bibliography of literature citations related to the design and evaluation of STI systems is presented. The use of manual and machine-readable literature searches; the review of numerous books, periodicals reports, and papers; and the selection and annotation of literature citations were required. The bibliography was produced because the information was needed to develop the methodology for the review and evaluation project, and a survey of the literature did not reveal the existence of a single published source of information pertinent to the subject. Approximately 200 citations are classified in four subject areas. The areas include information - general; information systems - design and evaluation, including information products and services; information - use and need; and information - economics
A study of the mechanism of thigmomorphogenesis in plants, with special reference to the role of ethylene and its significance to research with plants in space
Because of the paucity of data concerning thigmomorphogenesis, all aspects of the phenomenon were under study, although the role of ethylene mediation was central to the approach. Although this report must necessarily point to a specific time in ongoing research, several aspects of the study reached at least temporary stopping points and were therefore written and submitted for publication. These are identified. Other papers which are currently in preparation, but not yet submitted, are also identified.
