Electrospinning of ultra-thin polymer fibers
The electrospinning technique was used to spin ultra-thin fibers from several polymer/solvent systems. The diameter of the electrospun fibers ranged from 16 nm to 2 μm. The morphology of these fibers was investigated with an atomic force microscope (AFM) and an optical microscope. Polyethylene oxide) (PEO) dissolved in water or chloroform was studied in greater detail. PEO fibers spun from aqueous solution show a “beads on a string” morphology. An AFM study showed that the surface of these fibers is highly ordered. The “beads on a string” morphology can be avoided if PEO is spun from solution in chloroform; the resulting fibers show a lamellar morphology. Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) dissolved in water and cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone were additional polymer/solvent systems which were investigated. Furthermore, the electrospinning process was studied: different experimental lay-outs were tested, electrostatic fields were simulated, and voltage - current characteristics of the electrospinning process were recorded
Early stage morphology of quench condensed Ag, Pb and Pb/Ag hybrid films
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has been used to study the morphology of
Ag, Pb and Pb/Ag bilayer films fabricated by quench condensation of the
elements onto cold (T=77K), inert and atomically flat Highly Oriented Pyrolytic
Graphite (HOPG) substrates. All films are thinner than 10 nm and show a
granular structure that is consistent with earlier studies of QC films. The
average lateral diameter, , of the Ag grains, however, depends on
whether the Ag is deposited directly on HOPG ( = 13 nm) or on a Pb
film consisting of a single layer of Pb grains ( = 26.8 nm). In
addition, the critical thickness for electrical conduction () of Pb/Ag
films on inert glass substrates is substantially larger than for pure Ag films.
These results are evidence that the structure of the underlying substrate
exerts an influence on the size of the grains in QC films. We propose a

Granular discharge and clogging for tilted hoppers
We measure the flux of spherical glass beads through a hole as a systematic
function of both tilt angle and hole diameter, for two different size beads.
The discharge increases with hole diameter in accord with the Beverloo relation
for both horizontal and vertical holes, but in the latter case with a larger
small-hole cutoff. For large holes the flux decreases linearly in cosine of the
tilt angle, vanishing smoothly somewhat below the angle of repose. For small
holes it vanishes abruptly at a smaller angle. The conditions for zero flux are
discussed in the context of a {\it clogging phase diagram} of flow state vs
tilt angle and ratio of hole to grain size
Transitions in the Horizontal Transport of Vertically Vibrated Granular Layers
Motivated by recent advances in the investigation of fluctuation-driven
ratchets and flows in excited granular media, we have carried out experimental
and simulational studies to explore the horizontal transport of granular
particles in a vertically vibrated system whose base has a sawtooth-shaped
profile. The resulting material flow exhibits novel collective behavior, both
as a function of the number of layers of particles and the driving frequency;
in particular, under certain conditions, increasing the layer thickness leads
to a reversal of the current, while the onset of transport as a function of
frequency occurs gradually in a manner reminiscent of a phase transition. Our
experimental findings are interpreted here with the help of extensive, event
driven Molecular Dynamics simulations. In addition to reproducing the
experimental results, the simulations revealed that the current may be reversed
as a function of the driving frequency as well. We also give details about the
simulations so that similar numerical studies can be carried out in a more
straightforward manner in the future.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figure
