Charge density functional plus UU calculations are carried out to examine the validity of molecular JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 and 3/2 state in lacunar spinel GaM4_4X8_8 (M = Nb, Mo, Ta, and W). With LDA (spin-unpolarized local density approximation)+U+U, which has recently been suggested as the more desirable choice than LSDA (local spin density approximation)+U+U, we examine the band structure in comparison with the previous prediction based on the spin-polarized version of functional and with the prototypical JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 material Sr2_2IrO4_4. It is found that the previously suggested JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 and 3/2 band characters remain valid still in LDA+U+U calculations while the use of charge-only density causes some minor differences. Our result provides the further support for the novel molecular JeffJ_\text{eff} state in this series of materials, which can hopefully motivate the future exploration toward its verification and the further search for new functionalities

Using genomic annotations increases statistical power to detect eGenes.

MotivationExpression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) are genetic variants that affect gene expression. In eQTL studies, one important task is to find eGenes or genes whose expressions are associated with at least one eQTL. The standard statistical method to determine whether a gene is an eGene requires association testing at all nearby variants and the permutation test to correct for multiple testing. The standard method however does not consider genomic annotation of the variants. In practice, variants near gene transcription start sites (TSSs) or certain histone modifications are likely to regulate gene expression. In this article, we introduce a novel eGene detection method that considers this empirical evidence and thereby increases the statistical power.ResultsWe applied our method to the liver Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) data using distance from TSSs, DNase hypersensitivity sites, and six histone modifications as the genomic annotations for the variants. Each of these annotations helped us detected more candidate eGenes. Distance from TSS appears to be the most important annotation; specifically, using this annotation, our method discovered 50% more candidate eGenes than the standard permutation [email protected] or [email protected]

Theory of magnetic field-induced metaelectric critical end point in BiMn2_2O5_5

A recent experiment on the multiferroic BiMn2_2O5_5 compound under a strong applied magnetic field revealed a rich phase diagram driven by the coupling of magnetic and charge (dipolar) degrees of freedom. Based on the exchange-striction mechanism, we propose here a theoretical model with the intent to capture the interplay of the spin and dipolar moments in the presence of a magnetic field in BiMn2_2O5_5. Experimentally observed behavior of the dielectric constants, magnetic susceptibility, and the polarization is, for the most part, reproduced by our model. The critical behavior observed near the polarization reversal (P=0)(P=0) point in the phase diagram is interpreted as arising from the proximity to the critical end point.Comment: Theory; relevant experiment uploaded as arXiv:0810.190
