    Analysis of Laser ARPES from Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} in superconductive state: angle resolved self-energy and fluctuation spectrum

    We analyze the ultra high resolution laser angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) intensity from the slightly underdoped Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} in the superconductive (SC) state. The momentum distribution curves (MDC) were fitted at each energy \w employing the SC Green's function along several cuts perpendicular to the Fermi surface with the tilt angle θ\theta with respect to the nodal cut. The clear observation of particle-hole mixing was utilized such that the complex self-energy as a function of ω\omega is directly obtained from the fitting. The obtained angle resolved self-energy is then used to deduce the Eliashberg function \alpha^2 F^{(+)}(\th,\w) in the diagonal channel by inverting the d-wave Eliashberg equation using the maximum entropy method. Besides a broad featureless spectrum up to the cutoff energy ωc\omega_c, the deduced α2F\alpha^2 F exhibits two peaks around 0.05 eV and 0.015 eV. The former and the broad feature are already present in the normal state, while the latter emerges only below TcT_c. Both peaks become enhanced as TT is lowered or the angle th\th moves away from the nodal direction. The implication of these findings are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, summited to PR

    Quasi-Free-Standing Graphene Monolayer on a Ni Crystal through Spontaneous Na Intercalation

    Graphene on metal substrates often shows different electronic properties from isolated graphene because of graphene-substrate interactions. One needs to remove the metals with acids and then to transfer graphene to weakly interacting substrates to recover electrical properties inherent in graphene. This process is not easy and besides causes undesirable tears, defects, and impurities in graphene. Here, we report a method to recover the electronic structure of graphene from a strongly interacting Ni substrate by spontaneous Na intercalation. In order to characterize the intercalation process, the density-functional-theory calculations and angle-resolved photoemission-spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning-tunneling-microscopy (STM) measurements are carried out. From the density-functional-theory calculations, Na atoms energetically prefer interface intercalation to surface adsorption for the graphene/Ni(111) surface. Unlike most intercalants, Na atoms intercalate spontaneously at room temperature due to a tiny diffusion barrier, which is consistent with our temperature-dependent ARPES and core-level photoemission spectroscopy, and with our submonolayer ARPES and STM results at room temperature. As a result of the spontaneous intercalation, the electronic structure of graphene is almost recovered, as confirmed by the Dirac cone with a negligible band gap in ARPES and the sixfold symmetry in STM.open

    Entry Mode and Performance in a Transitional Economy: A Framework for Foreign-Invested Enterprises in China

    A conceptual framework is developed, bringing together entry mode, the influence of state officials, and the adoption of a customer-driven orientation in order to explain the performance of foreign-invested firms in a transitional economy. The model is tested on a sample of firms in China across eight provinces and cities, spread across the relatively developed South Coast, the Central Belt formed by Shanghai and the Yangzi basin and the less-developed North and West. We find that the decision to enter through a joint venture reduces the customer focus of the enterprise. Contrary to expectation, however, we find no positive relationship between entry by joint venture and the degree of state influence exerted over the enterprise. It appears that whollyowned foreign enterprises experience just as much involvement by government officials in their activities as do the joint ventures. However, greater customer focus fosters innovativeness, which in turn, leads to higher performance.     The Period Variation of and a Spot Model for the Eclipsing Binary AR Bootis

    New CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing system AR Boo were obtained from February 2006 to April 2008. The star's photometric properties are derived from detailed studies of the period variability and of all available light curves. We find that over about 56 years the orbital period of the system has varied due to a combination of an upward parabola and a sinusoid rather than in a monotonic fashion. Mass transfer from the less massive primary to the more massive secondary component is likely responsible for at least a significant part of the secular period change. The cyclical variation with a period of 7.57 yrs and a semi-amplitude of 0.0015 d can be produced either by a light-travel-time effect due to an unseen companion with a scaled mass of M3sini3M_3 \sin i_3=0.081 MM_\odot or by a magnetic period modulation in the secondary star. Historical light curves of AR Boo, as well as our own, display season-to-season light variability, which are best modeled by including both a cool spot and a hot one on the secondary star. We think that the spots express magnetic dynamo-related activity and offer limited support for preferring the magnetic interpretation of the 7.57-year cycle over the third-body understanding. Our solutions confirm that AR Boo belongs to the W-subtype contact binary class, consisting of a hotter, less massive primary star with a spectral type of G9 and a companion of spectral type K1.Comment: 30 pages, including 6 figures and 9 tables, accepted for publication in A

    Risk of Dementia After Smoking Cessation in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation

    IMPORTANCE: Incident atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of dementia. However, data on the association between smoking cessation after AF diagnosis and dementia risk are limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between changes in smoking status after AF diagnosis and dementia risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationwide cohort study with 126 252 patients used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, including patients who had a national health checkup examination within 2 years before and after AF diagnosis between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2016. Based on their smoking status, participants were classified as never smokers, ex-smokers, quit smokers, and current smokers. Ex-smokers were defined as those who had quit smoking before the first examination and remained quit until the second examination. Patients who were current smokers at the first health examination but had quit smoking before the second examination were classed as quit smokers. The index date was the second health examination. Patients were followed up until dementia, death, or the study period ended (December 31, 2017), whichever occurred first. Data were analyzed from January 13, 2020, to March 29, 2022. EXPOSURES: Smoking cessation after newly diagnosed AF. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Dementia, including Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia, was the primary outcome. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate hazard ratios. RESULTS: A total of 126 252 patients (mean [SD] age, 62.6 [12.0] years; 61.9% men) were included in the analysis. The mean (SD) CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score, which measures the risk of ischemic stroke, was 2.7 (1.7). Smoking status of the total study population was as follows: 65 579 never smokers (51.9%), 34 670 ex-smokers (27.5%), 8919 quit smokers (7.1%), and 17 084 current smokers (13.5%). During a median of 3 years of follow-up, dementia occurred in 5925 patients (1.11 per 1000 person-years). After multivariable adjustment, the risk of quit smokers was significantly lower than that of current smokers (hazard ratio, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.72-0.95]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this cohort study suggest that all types of smoking were associated with a significantly higher risk of dementia in patients with new-onset AF. Smoking cessation after AF diagnosis was associated with a lower risk of dementia than among current smokers. These findings may support promoting smoking cessation to reduce dementia risk in patients with new-onset AF

    Augmented reality in bone tumour resection

    Objectives: We evaluated the accuracy of augmented reality (AR)-based navigation assistance through simulation of bone tumours in a pig femur model. Methods: We developed an AR-based navigation system for bone tumour resection, which could be used on a tablet pc. To simulate a bone tumour in the pig femur, a cortical window was made in the diaphysis and bone cement was inserted. A total of 133 pig femurs were used and tumour resection was simulated with AR-assisted resection (164 resection in 82 femurs, half by an orthropaedic oncology expert and half by an orthopaedic resident) and resection with the conventional method (82 resection in 41 femurs). In the conventional group, resection was performed after measuring the distance from the edge of the condyle to the expected resection margin with a ruler as per routine clinical practice. Results: The mean error of 164 resections in 82 femurs in the AR group was 1.71 mm (0 to 6). The mean error of 82 resections in 41 femurs in the conventional resection group was 2.64 mm (0 to 11) (p < 0.05, one-way analysis of variance). The probabilities of a surgeon obtaining a 10 mm surgical margin with a 3 mm tolerance were 90.2% in AR-assisted resections, and 70.7% in conventional resections. Conclusion We demonstrated that the accuracy of tumour resection was satisfactory with the help of the AR navigation system, with the tumour shown as a virtual template. In addition, this concept made the navigation system simple and available without additional cost or time. © 2017 Cho et al.1

    Antibacterial Fluorinated Silica Colloid Superhydrophobic Surfaces

    A superhydrophobic xerogel coating synthesized from a mixture of nanostructured fluorinated silica colloids, fluoroalkoxysilane, and a backbone silane is reported. The resulting fluorinated surface was characterized using contact angle goniometry, SEM, and AFM. Quantitative bacterial adhesion studies performed using a parallel plate flow cell demonstrated that the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were reduced by 2.08 ± 0.25 and 1.76 ± 0.12 log over controls, respectively. This simple superhydrophobic coating synthesis may be applied to any surface regardless of geometry and does not require harsh synthesis or processing conditions, making it an ideal candidate as a biopassivation strategy

    In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we investigate the properties of Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4. From the branching ratios of the L-edge isotropic x-ray absorption spectra, we determine that the spin-orbit coupling is remarkably independent of x for both iridium and rhodium sites. DFT+U calculations show that the doping is close to isoelectronic and introduces impurity bands of predominantly rhodium character close to the lower Hubbard band. Overlap of these two bands leads to metallic behavior. Since the low-energy states for xjeff=1/2 character, we suggest that the electronic properties of this material can be described by an inhomogeneous Hubbard model, where the on-site energies change due to local variations in the spin-orbit interaction strength combined with additional changes in binding energy
