    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to assess the reproductive rates among different breeds, mostly used in commodity farm conditions. The studies were obtained at fertility level from 6.27 animals in the Californian breed to 8.49 animals in Popielno White. High rate of failures during rearing was observed in the Californian breed. Litter weight was dependent on the number of births and young rearing, lactation and care of female. Kitten weight at 35 day of age ranged from 603.21g (Alaskan) to 736.10g (Giant Chinchilla). The results indicate the usefulness of a Popielno White breed for the livestock production

SummaryA decision to start radiotherapy should be based on at least two documents:1.Written standards of obligatory clinical procedures which are in fact radiotherapeutic schemes.2.Therapeutic protocols describing all mandatory procedures performed to ensure a safe and proper treatment of the patient. The range of activities described in the therapeutic protocol is very wide.It includes all initial procedures implemented in the simulation room, the CT scanner, in the treatment planning system and the mould- room, and it describes the verification process of the treatment plan, mandatory to start radiotherapy. The therapeutic protocol describes in details what and how should be checked by an internal control system and it qualifies the demands required to sum up the treatment and its’ accordance with the planned radiotherapy scheme. All the activities performed are recorded in a QA protocol, which is an integral part of the therapeutic protocol. In this paper we present the therapeutic protocol in force in the Regional Oncological Hospital in Szczecin and the QA and in-vivo protocols, which assure safe radiotherapy of the patient

Wavelet denoising of multiframe optical coherence tomography data

We introduce a novel speckle noise reduction algorithm for OCT images. Contrary to present approaches, the algorithm does not rely on simple averaging of multiple image frames or denoising on the final averaged image. Instead it uses wavelet decompositions of the single frames for a local noise and structure estimation. Based on this analysis, the wavelet detail coefficients are weighted, averaged and reconstructed. At a signal-to-noise gain at about 100% we observe only a minor sharpness decrease, as measured by a full-width-half-maximum reduction of 10.5%. While a similar signal-to-noise gain would require averaging of 29 frames, we achieve this result using only 8 frames as input to the algorithm. A possible application of the proposed algorithm is preprocessing in retinal structure segmentation algorithms, to allow a better differentiation between real tissue information and unwanted speckle noise

A STUDY INTO HORSES USE IN ORGANIC FARMING IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH-EAST POLAND

The aim of the study is to show the advantages of using horses and modern horse-drawn machines in organic farming. The study presents the benefits derived from using horses in agriculture from the aspects of sustainable development. Workhorses, both in organic farming as well as on small family farms, serve as sources of renewable energy thus contributing to the protection of biodiversity. Modern horse-drawn machines and tools improve farms’ self-reliance, enhances the living standards of on-farm workers, empowers local communities and leads to job-creation. The need for further studies and analysis of the use of workhorses in aspects regarding sustainable development in Poland was also signified

Aberrant orbitofrontal connectivity in marijuana smoking adolescents

Introduction: Orbitofrontal (OFC) circuits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of substance use disorders. The current study examined OFC functional connectivity differences in marijuana-using adolescents (MJ) and non-using healthy controls (HC). Methods: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) resting-state data were obtained on a 3 T MRI scanner on 31 HC and 43 heavy MJ smokers. Image analyses were performed between groups (MJ, HC) for the left and right OFC separately. Regression analyses between OFC functional connectivity and lifetime MJ use, age of first MJ use and impulsivity also were performed. Results: Increased OFC functional connectivity to frontal and motor regions was observed in heavy MJ users compared to HC. Earlier age of first MJ use was associated with increased functional connectivity of the right OFC to motor regions. High lifetime MJ use was associated with increased OFC functional connectivity to posterior brain regions in MJ youth. Discussion: Findings indicate atypical OFC functional connectivity patterns in attentional/executive, motor and reward networks in adolescents with heavy MJ use. These anomalies may be related to suboptimal decision making capacities and increased impulsivity. Results also suggest different OFC connectivity patterns may be present in adolescents with early onset of MJ use and high lifetime exposure to MJ

Outcome of a multimodal therapy of a recurrent adenocarcinoma arising from Caesarean section scar endometriosis—A case report

BackgroundEndometriosis occurring in surgical scars is a well-described entity. Malignant transformation of endometriosis is a rare event, with most cases belonging to adenocarcinoma. The initial surgical treatment is a method of choice. Due to lack of therapeutic recommendations, adjuvant therapy and recurrence management are a great challenge for oncologists.AimThe aim of this paper was to present a long-term survival as the outcome of multimodal therapy in the patient with recurrent adenocarcinoma arising from Caesarean section scar endometriosis.CaseWe present the case of a woman with recurrent adenocarcinoma arising from Caesarean section scar endometriosis. The disease was first diagnosed in September 1997 at age 43. The patient underwent abdominal hysterectomy with tumour excision. Due to a local recurrence after 4 years, tumour excision with abdominal wall repair using a plastic mesh, regional lymphadenectomy, bilateral salpingo-ovariectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy for the pelvic region with local boost were performed; in addition hormontherapy with medroxyprogesterone was started. Because of a recurrent pelvic tumour, chemotherapy, further local palliative radiotherapy and brachytherapy were administered. Subsequently distant metastases in bilateral axillary lymph nodes were diagnosed and palliative radiotherapy was performed. The patient died of morbus neoplasmaticus generalisatus in September 2008. The follow-up period had been 132 months.ConclusionThis paper is, to our knowledge, the only report in literature that presents a long-term survival as the outcome of multimodal therapy in the patient with this rare diagnosis. Further reports of new cases can help establish optimal treatment guidelines

Purpose. Results of treatment of locally advanced larynx cancer T3-4No-4 are unsatisfied. The aim of study is analysis of risk factors. Methods and Materials. 112 patients with larynx cancer after radical surgical treatment had postoperative radiotherapy (conventional or accelarated). Results. The 3-year overall survival (OS) was 58%. Margin status and numer of risk factors had impast on OS. The 3-year locoregional control (LRC) was 80%. Number of risk factors, level of hemoglobin, overall treatment time and dose were significantly associated with LRC. Incidence of distant metastases was asssociated with G3 suamous cell carcinoma and index of nalignancy H. Glanz
