We analyze and optimize the performance of coupled plasmonic nanoantennas for refractive index sensing. The investigated structure supports a sub- and a superradiant mode that originates in the weak coupling of a dipolar and a quadrupolar mode, resulting in a Fano-type spectral lineshape. In our study, we vary the near-field coupling of the two modes and particularly examine the influence of the spectral detuning between them on the sensing performance. Surprisingly, the case of matched resonance frequencies does not provide the best sensor. Instead, we find that the right amount of coupling strength and spectral detuning allows for achieving the ideal combination of narrow linewidth and sufficient excitation strength of the subradiant mode, and therefore results in an optimized sensor performance. Our findings are confirmed by experimental results and first-order perturbation theory. The latter is based on the resonant state expansion and provides direct access to resonance frequency shifts and linewidth changes as well as the excitation strength of the modes. Based on these parameters, we define a figure of merit that can be easily calculated for different sensing geometries and agrees well with the numerical and experimental results.by Prajakta Jadhav, Mohit Singh and Amit Prashan

Double wedge model for computing seismic sliding displacements of cantilever retaining walls
A double wedge model has been proposed to compute seismic sliding displacements of cantilever retaining walls. Experimental observations indicate formation of rupture planes in the form of an inverted triangular wedge in the backfill of retaining walls. Computation of critical yield acceleration at each time instant considering the v-shaped weakest rupture planes which evolve during the ground motion is the preliminary aim of the double wedge model. The model computes translational displacements considering the relative movement of soil wedge along these rupture planes. It considers velocity compatibility along with the acceleration compatibility between the wall and soil wedge. It also computes approximate depth of subsidence of the backfill soil during ground motion. A simplified double wedge model has been also considered wherein the yield acceleration at all time instants is computed with respect to a fixed wedge. The double wedge model and its simplified version have been compared with different cases studies, which show the seismic sliding displacements matching well with the real measurements.by Prajakta R. Access to Money and Relation to Women’s Use of Family Planning Methods Among Young Married Women in Rural India
OBJECTIVES: The social positioning (i.e. social status and autonomy) of women in the household facilitates women’s access to and decision-making power related to family planning (FP). Women’s access to spending money, which may be an indicator of greater social positioning in the household, may also be greater among women who engage in income generating activities for their families, regardless of women’s status in the household. However, in both scenarios, access to money may independently afford greater opportunity to obtain family planning services among women. This study seeks to assess whether access to money is associated with FP outcomes independently of women’s social positioning in their households. METHODS: Using survey data from married couples in rural Maharashtra, India (n=855), crude and adjusted regression was used to assess women’s access to their own spending money in relation to past 3 month use of condoms and other forms of contraceptives (pills, injectables, intrauterine device). RESULTS: Access to money (59%) was associated with condom and other contraceptive use (AORs ranged: 1.5 – 1.8). These findings remained significant after adjusting for women’s FP decision-making power in the household and mobility to seek FP services. CONCLUSION: While preliminary, findings suggest that access to money may increase women’s ability to obtain FP methods, even in contexts where social norms to support women’s power in FP decision-making may not be readily adopted
