    The effect of racial confirmation biases on whistleblowing intent

    Previous research has demonstrated the negative impact of stereotypes on Black individuals in the workplace, including differential employment rates between races, the influence of race on hiring decisions, and the effect of racial discrimination on job satisfaction and turnover. However, the impact of racial stereotypes on employees’ decisions to report a witnessed wrongdoing (i.e., whistleblowing) have not been examined. In this study, I investigated whether racial stereotypes and confirmation biases make an individual more likely to blow the whistle on a Black coworker than a White coworker for the same wrongdoing. I also examined the potential moderating effect of the moral intensity of the issue (i.e., level of harm), given that other stereotypes were shown to be influential in some whistleblowing decisions in past research. In the present study college student participants read a scenario in which a hypothetical coworker committed a wrongdoing. The race of the wrongdoer and the level of harm associated with the wrongdoing were manipulated. Participants indicated their likelihood of reporting the individual and the level of punishment they would recommend. It was predicted that racial confirmation biases would make participants more likely to report their Black versus White coworker for the same wrongdoing, and more likely to recommend a harsher punishment. It was also predicted that when the level of harm to another was high versus low, the likelihood of reporting the wrongdoing and the suggested punishment severity would also be high, and the race of the coworker would play less of a role given that the situation was less ambiguous. It was hypothesized that when moral intensity of the issue was low and the situation was more ambiguous, confirmation biases would cause participants to see the Black coworker as more culpable—leading them to recommend harsher punishments for the Black coworker than for the White coworker. The study’s results demonstrated the hypothesized effect of level of harm on punishment recommendations and reporting likelihood. However, effects of race were not demonstrated. Implications of this study include the implementation of employee training that highlights behaviors to report, regardless of their consequences

    Accountability and Democracy in the Case of Using Force under International Auspices

    This presentation derives from a large research project that has been more than three years in progress and reflects the work of a multinational team of lawyers, policy analysts, and political scientists. The project is supported by the Ford Foundation and will conclude at the end of 2000 with the completion of a book that will cover the experience of nine democracies in deploying their military forces under international auspices as this experience relates to two large questions. The project examines two questions: What is the interactive relationship between international commitments and national constitutional and political requirements? How does this relationship work for democracies, and does it ensure accountability, including democratic accountability for decisions made by international institutions? But why examine democracies and why examine issues of the use of military forces? Democracies, starting with the United States, are world powers that play crucial roles in maintaining international order. Democracies require some measure of popular support for actions taken by their governments. The question for this project is: What level of popular support and what level of accountability are required, and how are these achieved in democracies? These questions are fundamental to assessing the viability of any post-Cold War security system. The military action by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Kosovo added an unexpected element to the study after the project got underway, and introduced the international legal ambiguities and national questions of acting without the authorization of the UN Security Council. The Kosovo action demonstrated that the post-Cold War system as a revival of the post-World War II system was not adequate to address the conflicts of the post-Cold War period, and that the security packages represented by the United Nations and NATO needed to be reconsidered both internationally and nationally to fit the problems of today

    Scenario-based MUVE for Science Inquiry

    The development of scientific inquiry skills is a core element of the draft national science curriculum for secondary school students. Yet, despite the prominence of inquiry learning in the curriculum, research has shown that student understanding of and interest in engaging in scientific inquiry is lacking in Australian secondary schools. The purpose of the Virtual Worlds project, which commenced this year, is to conduct learning and cognitive sciences-based research into the potential of scenario-based Multi-User Virtual Environment systems to promote and perhaps enhance secondary school learning experiences. In this paper we consider a number of existing science education-based multi-user virtual environments and introduce our project including our goals, approach and scenario underpinning the virtual world

    Using individual-based bioenergetic models to predict the aggregate effects of disturbance on populations : a case study with beaked whales and Navy sonar

Predicting population consequences of these behavioral changes requires integrating short-term individual responses into models that forecast population dynamics across multiple generations. This is especially challenging for long-lived animals, because of the different time scales involved. Beaked whales are a group of deep-diving odontocete whales that respond behaviorally when exposed to military mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), but the effect of these nonlethal responses on beaked whale populations is unknown. Population consequences of aggregate exposure to MFAS was assessed for two beaked whale populations that are regularly present on U.S. Navy training ranges where MFAS is frequently used. Our approach integrates a wide range of data sources, including telemetry data, information on spatial variation in habitat quality, passive acoustic data on the temporal pattern of sonar use and its relationship to beaked whale foraging activity, into an individual-based model with a dynamic bioenergetic module that governs individual life history. The predicted effect of disturbance from MFAS on population abundance ranged between population extinction to a slight increase in population abundance. These effects were driven by the interaction between the temporal pattern of MFAS use, baseline movement patterns, the spatial distribution of prey, the nature of beaked whale behavioral response to MFAS and the top-down impact of whale foraging on prey abundance. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for monitoring of marine mammal populations and highlight key uncertainties to help guide future directions for assessing population impacts of nonlethal disturbance for these and other long-lived animals.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    NS5A Resistance-Associated Substitutions in Patients with Genotype 1 Hepatitis C Virus:Prevalence and Effect on Treatment Outcome

    Background & Aims The efficacy of NS5A inhibitors for the treatment of patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) can be affected by the presence of NS5A resistance-associated substitutions (RASs). We analyzed data from 35 phase I, II, and III studies in 22 countries to determine the pretreatment prevalence of various NS5A RASs, and their effect on outcomes of treatment with ledipasvir-sofosbuvir in patients with genotype 1 HCV. Methods NS5A gene deep sequencing analysis was performed on samples from 5397 patients in Gilead clinical trials. The effect of baseline RASs on sustained virologic response (SVR) rates was assessed in the 1765 patients treated with regimens containing ledipasvir-sofosbuvir. Results Using a 15% cut-off, pretreatment NS5A and ledipasvir-specific RASs were detected in 13% and 8% of genotype 1a patients, respectively, and in 18% and 16% of patients with genotype 1b. Among genotype 1a treatment-naïve patients, SVR rates were 91% (42/46) vs. 99% (539/546) for those with and without ledipasvir-specific RASs, respectively. Among treatment-experienced genotype 1a patients, SVR rates were 76% (22/29) vs. 97% (409/420) for those with and without ledipasvir-specific RASs, respectively. Among treatment-naïve genotype 1b patients, SVR rates were 99% for both those with and without ledipasvir-specific RASs (71/72 vs. 331/334), and among treatment-experienced genotype 1b patients, SVR rates were 89% (41/46) vs. 98% (267/272) for those with and without ledipasvir-specific RASs, respectively. Conclusions Pretreatment ledipasvir-specific RASs that were present in 8–16% of patients have an impact on treatment outcome in some patient groups, particularly treatment-experienced patients with genotype 1a HCV. Lay summary The efficacy of treatments using NS5A inhibitors for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can be affected by the presence of NS5A resistance-associated substitutions (RASs). We reviewed results from 35 clinical trials where patients with genotype 1 HCV infection received treatments that included ledipasvir-sofosbuvir to determine how prevalent NS5A RASs are in patients at baseline, and found that ledipasvir-specific RASs were present in 8–16% of patients prior to treatment and had a negative impact on treatment outcome in subset of patient groups, particularly treatment-experienced patients with genotype 1a HCV

    Adaptive optics with an infrared pyramid wavefront sensor at Keck

    The study of cold or obscured, red astrophysical sources can significantly benefit from adaptive optics (AO) systems employing infrared (IR) wavefront sensors. One particular area is the study of exoplanets around M-dwarf stars and planet formation within protoplanetary disks in star-forming regions. Such objects are faint at visible wavelengths but bright enough in the IR to be used as a natural guide star for the AO system. Doing the wavefront sensing at IR wavelengths enables high-resolution AO correction for such science cases, with the potential to reach the contrasts required for direct imaging of exoplanets. To this end, a new near-infrared pyramid wavefront sensor (PyWFS) has been added to the Keck II AO system, extending the performance of the facility AO system for the study of faint red objects. We present the Keck II PyWFS, which represents a number of firsts, including the first PyWFS installed on a segmented telescope and the first use of an IR PyWFS on a 10-m class telescope. We discuss the scientific and technological advantages offered by IR wavefront sensing and present the design and commissioning of the Keck PyWFS. In particular, we report on the performance of the Selex Avalanche Photodiode for HgCdTe InfraRed Array detector used for the PyWFS and highlight the novelty of this wavefront sensor in terms of the performance for faint red objects and the improvement in contrast. The system has been commissioned for science with the vortex coronagraph in the NIRC2 IR science instrument and is being commissioned alongside a new fiber injection unit for NIRSPEC. We present the first science verification of the system—to facilitate the study of exoplanets around M-type stars

    Association between average daily gain, faecal dry matter content and concentration of Lawsonia intracellularis in faeces

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to investigate the association between average daily gain and the number of <it>Lawsonia intracellularis</it> bacteria in faeces of growing pigs with different levels of diarrhoea.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A longitudinal field study (<it>n</it> = 150 pigs) was performed in a Danish herd from day 29 to 47 post weaning. Every third day all pigs were weighed, subjected to a clinical examination and faecal samples were obtained. Faecal samples were subjected to dry matter determination and absolute quantification by PCR for <it>L. intracellularis</it> and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). Association between average daily gain, faecal dry matter content, numbers of <it>L. intracellularis</it> bacteria and PCV2 genome copies in faeces was investigated in a multilevel mixed-effects linear model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Increasing numbers of <it>L. intracellularis</it> log<sub>10</sub> bacteria/g faeces were significantly associated with decreasing average daily gain (<it>P</it> < 0.001). The association was decreasing with increasing faecal dry matter content (<it>P</it> < 0.01). The number of PCV2 log<sub>10</sub> copies/g faeces was not significantly associated with average daily gain of the pigs (<it>P</it> > 0.5).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results suggest a potential application of a PCR quantifying <it>L. intracellularis</it> in growing pigs. Faecal dry matter content must be taken into consideration in interpretation of such test results.</p

    Early social distancing policies in Europe, changes in mobility & COVID-19 case trajectories: insights from Spring 2020

    Background Social distancing have been widely used to mitigate community spread of SARS-CoV-2. We sought to quantify the impact of COVID-19 social distancing policies across 27 European counties in spring 2020 on population mobility and the subsequent trajectory of disease. Methods We obtained data on national social distancing policies from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker and aggregated and anonymized mobility data from Google. We used a pre-post comparison and two linear mixed-effects models to first assess the relationship between implementation of national policies and observed changes in mobility, and then to assess the relationship between changes in mobility and rates of COVID-19 infections in subsequent weeks. Results Compared to a pre-COVID baseline, Spain saw the largest decrease in aggregate population mobility (~70%), as measured by the time spent away from residence, while Sweden saw the smallest decrease (~20%). The largest declines in mobility were associated with mandatory stay-at-home orders, followed by mandatory workplace closures, school closures, and non-mandatory workplace closures. While mandatory shelter-in-place orders were associated with 16.7% less mobility (95% CI: -23.7% to -9.7%), non-mandatory orders were only associated with an 8.4% decrease (95% CI: -14.9% to -1.8%). Large-gathering bans were associated with the smallest change in mobility compared with other policy types. Changes in mobility were in turn associated with changes in COVID-19 case growth. For example, a 10% decrease in time spent away from places of residence was associated with 11.8% (95% CI: 3.8%, 19.1%) fewer new COVID-19 cases. Discussion This comprehensive evaluation across Europe suggests that mandatory stay-at-home orders and workplace closures had the largest impacts on population mobility and subsequent COVID-19 cases at the onset of the pandemic. With a better understanding of policies’ relative performance, countries can more effectively invest in, and target, early nonpharmacological interventions
