A positive energy theorem for Einstein-aether and Ho\v{r}ava gravity

Energy positivity is established for a class of solutions to Einstein-aether theory and the IR limit of Ho\v{r}ava gravity within a certain range of coupling parameters. The class consists of solutions where the aether 4-vector is divergence free on a spacelike surface to which it is orthogonal (which implies that the surface is maximal). In particular, this result holds for spherically symmetric solutions at a moment of time symmetry.Comment: 4 page

Promoting Vermont Films in Vermont\u27s Libraries: Presenting Freedom & Unity - The Vermont Movie in a Small Vermont Library

    Get PDF
This poster reviews steps taken to screen a recent Vermont movie (over a two month period, in six parts) at the Tunbridge (Vermont) Public Library, in an effort to promote Vermont films, at the same time provide provide programming for libraries. The filmmakers and librarians initiated post-screening discussions on topics explored in the film, with the goal of engaging audiences on local issues. A review of the audience attendance, funding and recommendations for future collaborations is included

Effects of aircraft design on STOL ride quality: A simulator study

    Get PDF
To improve the ride quality in short takeoff aircraft, several means have been investigated. In general, these methods consist of placing sensors in the aircraft which sense aircraft motion, usually linear accelerations and angular rates. These signals are then used to deflect control surfaces which generate aerodynamic forces and moments which tend to minimize the motion which the passenger feels. One of the disadvantages of some of these systems is that they may tend to degrade the handling qualities or controllability of the airplane, making it more difficult or annoying for the pilot to fly. Rather than using active control systems to control ride quality, one might possibly design aircraft so that they are inherently pleasant to ride. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between characteristic aircraft motions and aircraft ride quality

The effects of aircraft design on STOL ride quality

    Get PDF
Effects of aircraft dynamic characteristics on passenger ride quality are investigated to determine ride-quality isocontours similar to aircraft handling-qualities contours. Measurements are made on a moving-base simulator while varying the aircraft short-period and Dutch Roll frequencies and dampings. Both pilot ratings and subjective ride-quality ratings are obtained during flight. Ride and handling qualities were found to be complementary for the Dutch Roll mode, but not for the short-period mode. Regions of optimal ride and handling qualities are defined for the short-period mode, and the effects of turbulence levels studied

Black holes and Hawking radiation in spacetime and its analogues

These notes introduce the fundamentals of black hole geometry, the thermality of the vacuum, and the Hawking effect, in spacetime and its analogues. Stimulated emission of Hawking radiation, the trans-Planckian question, short wavelength dispersion, and white hole radiation in the setting of analogue models are also discussed. No prior knowledge of differential geometry, general relativity, or quantum field theory in curved spacetime is assumed.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures; to appear in the proceedings of the IX SIGRAV School on 'Analogue Gravity', Como (Italy), May 2011, eds. Construction of N = 2 Chiral Supergravity Compatible with the Reality Condition

    Get PDF
We construct N = 2 chiral supergravity (SUGRA) which leads to Ashtekar's canonical formulation. The supersymmetry (SUSY) transformation parameters are not constrained at all and auxiliary fields are not required in contrast with the method of the two-form gravity. We also show that our formulation is compatible with the reality condition, and that its real section is reduced to the usual N = 2 SUGRA up to an imaginary boundary term.Comment: 16 pages, late

Comment on "Accelerated Detectors and Temperature in (Anti) de Sitter Spaces"

    Get PDF
It is shown how the results of Deser and Levin on the response of accelerated detectors in anti-de Sitter space can be understood from the same general perspective as other thermality results in spacetimes with bifurcate Killing horizons.Comment: 5 pages, LaTe
