Enhancement of p-GaN conductivity using PECVD SiOx
A technique to enhance the hole concentration in activated Mg-doped p-type GaN epitaxial layers is described. The method consists of depositing a porous plasma-nhancedchemical vapor deposited SiOx layer on top of p-GaN after which the sample is heated to 950°C in nitrogen ambient for 1 min followed by the removal of the SiOx layer in a buffered HF solution. A significant improvement of the conductivity of the p-GaN layer has been obtained
Diversity in older adults’ care networks: the added value of individual beliefs and social network proximity
Objectives: Policy reforms in long-term care require an increased share of informal caregivers in elderly care. This may be more feasible for older adults who (believe they) can organize the care themselves and have a local social network. This study describes care network types, how they vary in the share of informal caregivers, and examines associations with characteristics of community-dwelling older adults, including individual beliefs and network proximity. Method: Latent class analyses were applied to a subsample of older care receivers (N = 491) from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, in order to identify homogeneous subgroups of people with similar care networks. Multinomial regression analysis explored associations between network type and care receiver characteristics. Results: Privately paid, coresidential, large informal, and publicly paid care network types were distinguished. Variation in informal care appeared mostly related to health, partner status, income, and proximity of children. Proximity of other potential informal caregivers did not affect the network type. Perceived control of care was highest in the privately paid network. Discussion: The results suggest that local (non-)kin could be mobilized more often in coresidential networks. Increasing informal or alternative care in publicly paid networks is less likely, due to limited social and financial resources
Leptographium bhutanense sp. nov., associated with the root collar weevil Hylobitelus chenkupdorjii on Pinus wallichiana in Bhutan
Leptographium spp. are commonly associated with bark beetles and weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and some are important tree pathogens. In a recent survey of diseases and insect pests of conifer trees in Bhutan, the root collar weevil, Hylobitelus chenkupdorjii was found girdling young Himalayan blue pine (Pinus wallichiana) trees in Central Bhutan. Intensive wood staining and a Leptographium sp. were associated with damage by this insect. The fungus was also isolated from individuals of H. chenkupdorjii. It was tentatively identified based on morphology and then compared with other Leptographium spp. using DNA sequences for three gene regions. Morphological characteristics showed that the Leptographium sp. from H. chenkupdorjii is similar to, but distinct from L. procerum and L. profanum. DNA sequence comparisons revealed that the isolates from Bhutan resided in a distinct well-supported clade and confirmed that they represent an undescribed taxon for which the name Leptographium bhutanense sp. nov. is provided
Bayesian estimation for selective trace gas detection
We present a Bayesian estimation analysis for a particular trace gas
detection technique with species separation provided by differential diffusion.
The proposed method collects a sample containing multiple gas species into a
common volume, and then allows it to diffuse across a linear array of optical
absorption detectors, using, for example, high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavities.
The estimation procedure assumes that all gas parameters (e.g. diffusion
constants, optical cross sections) are known except for the number population
of each species, which are determined from the time-of-flight absorption
profiles in each detector
